*****Official February 2015 Thread! Come check in and chat!*****

I know there is already an actual thread about this but since so many of us are just a week or two away from our trip, I wanted to ask this in here. Is anyone concerned about the measles outbreak?

I wasn't really concerned at all but the more they talk about it on our local news, the US news, news articles, etc. the more uneasy I'm feeling. I'm not worried about my kids, they've both been vaccinated, as has my DH (who is quite a few years younger than me). I'm concerned about myself. I'm almost 40 years old and while I've been vaccinated, it was a lifetime ago lol I'm sure I'll be fine but it has definitely been on my mind the past couple of days. I called my doctor today and to get in for a blood test to check for immunities but I'd first need to go see him, then go to get the blood work done and then go back to him for the results. I simply do not have the actual time left to do that (can't get into see him until next Thursday since it's not an urgently needed appointment), so that's totally out of the question.

Anyone in this thread around my age? What are your thoughts about this outbreak? Are you concerned?

I am 43 and my husband is 51. We are both going to get boosters to be safe. We are leaving in a couple weeks so we don't want to get the blood work when they are saying it's ok just to have the vaccination. Both our kids are up to date on vaccinations. When the outbreak first started I was somewhat worried, but have been more concerned as the outbreak grows. It won't stop our trip for sure, but has added a level of concern about things I've really never thought about before when traveling in the US.

If your daughter already had measles, she is immune and can't get it again.

And there's not a few types of measles, there's just measles. Might have been mumps or scarlet fever you're thinking of.

Nope not mumps, I know what mumps are - you get a really fat face - not that, not scarlet fever either, seen pics of that - wasn't that

Maybe German measles?

Rubella - sure, could have been rubella.

All I know was - she had the fever, runny nose and rash that started on the torso, then over her body, Drs each time said Measles, never went into what sort it was.

Unless she was just very unlucky and got them more than once AND was vaccinated aswell. I do know when she was little, her immune system was really bad, she would catch anything and everything.

I can actually remember asking the Dr about it, saying I thought there was only 2 types and to be told - nope there are more than 20 odd different types. Being a Dr, you kind of believe them.

She had blood tests done when she was about 3 and they came back that her immune system was really low, almost non existent, they stated that she will be the type of kid who catches everything.

We cancelled our trip. My husband's Granny's 80th birthday party got scheduled for that weekend. I know I should be sad, but we were thinking of moving the trip to later anyways to catch more of the 60th Celebration. Longer wait, but oh well!

I am 41 and my husband is 45. We are going to DL in three weeks with our two daughters who have been vaccinated with the MMR vaccines. Both my husband and I had our measles vaccine when we were young. I read a bunch of stuff and it sounded as though two shots are better. One shot has a 95% effectiveness and two shots has 97-99%. I called the Health Department in Washington State and they recommended that my husband and I get the MMR vacinne. We got ours tonight at Walgreens and it was $99.99 per shot. Insurance will be billed. Because we will be in DL in 21 days, we didn't have time to have a doctor's appt, blood work, wait for results, etc.

We will be at the parks on 2/16 ... Coincidentally, I was vaccinated with MMR for the first time on 2/16/05 (digital medical charts say so!). I wasn't vaccinated as an early 70s kid ... I had such a horrible reaction to a different vaccine, I carried a "no mmr vaccine due to contraindication" Rx through all my schooling. Before I got married, my Lady doctor had me tested for immunity. Nada. Had the MMR at age 34 for the first time at my doc's insistence.

Doc says no booster needed for me given we have a documented date of the innoculation and it was a "good batch". Kids 5 & 8 are all up-to- date.

Hubby? We don't know. He's 51, had Rubella as a baby. His mom passed in 2010, so he doesn't know if or when he was vaccinated. He's scheduled for blood draw tomorrow to check immunity. He may or may not get a vaccine, based on results.

Better safe than sorry! But with all our vaccines all in order, Disneyland here we come!!!

Feels so crazy to be doing this for a trip we've mindlessly prepared for 13 trips now. This one seems so much more troublesome.

That's what we'll probably do. Hubby has the flu right now but it's good to know Walgreens has it.

We are in the same boat and I feel like I have a pretty good plan....

So I wasn't worried at all since my kids are fully vaxed even the wee ones have had two doses because there was an outbreak here last year and our daughter was immune compromised shortly before so they made an exception and vaccinated our two youngest early to protect her.

What I didn't think of at that time, and until it was posted here a couple days ago is I have NO IDEA if DH and I are covered.

So in Canada anyway they didn't start doing the booster, 2nd shot, until 1996 and anyone who was born between 1952 and 1996 should have gone to get two shots once they started them. Neither DH nor I or our parents can remember if we went. I realized this yesterday! So I talked to the heath nurse. You "CAN" do the blood test but that takes time and we leave in two weeks - it takes two weeks for the shot to be fully active although you will get some immunity right away.

SO anyway our plan is to skip the blood test since there isn't time. The nurse told me that you can't be "over vaccinated" against measles so we are both getting boosters today. I don't even have to try to get into the Dr - here pharmacies and travel clinics have the shot! We are going to our local pharmacy tonight to get the booster shot AND it's even FREE! :)

Where in Canada are you? The lady at my doctor's office never even recommended that for us! So did you just go into the pharmacy and they did it there? I'm in Alberta and I think I'd have to go into an Alberta Health clinic at the very least but I'm not positive. I think I will look into it this weekend. How long does it take once you get the shot for it to actually work?

I hope your hubby gets over the flu quickly!

I went to the Walgreens website. I selected a Walgreens close by and was able to schedule our vaccine appointments online. Super quick and efficient!

I was going to pick up some Disney Gift Cards for the trip.

Can you pay with gift cards at the food carts?

Like the Churro carts? I think you can at most carts (all that take cards will take gift cards) but I would bring a little cash just in case. You can use gift cards at all quick service locations (like for a hamburger or something).

What you reckon guys Dapper day Sunday with longer hours and Fireworks but big crowds, or a Monday with shorter hours no Fireworks but small crowds, if you had the choice which one would you go for.:confused3

While I would love to see the dapper day folks, I would go for lower crowd levels for sure.

My son was just diagnosed yesterday and I'm pretty positive I'm coming down with it. Luckily we have 32 days to recover before we travel! This stuff really is a beating!

Looks like the castle is now covered ;)

What the castle looked like when it was tarped prior the 50th anniv.
There is a strong possibility that the tarps will be painted to look the castle this time around.

Found the above by googling "disneyland castle tarped"

Well, laundry starts tomorrow and packing next Sunday. Only one full week of work left! :cool1: The weather has looked beautiful there, so we sure hope it continues. While we have had a pretty mild winter here so far, the hot sun will feel great!

Anyone here ever go to Joe's Crab Shack by the Target? If not and if you like seafood, it's a really fun place to go! Just trying to figure out if we are doing it on our first night (if we don't do the park) or on our non-park day.

We went to Bubba Gump Shrimps on our last visit & enjoyed it. We don't have time while in Disney this time (trying new things at Disney) but we are planning to go again on our 2nd leg of the trip before we head down to San Diego--hit it after going to Universal Studios. :lovestruc

 We leave in exactly 14 days so I am jealous of your 1 week of work left. As of right now I have 9 days of work left since this Friday is a pro-d day for DS and I always stay home with him on days off. That might change since he has been running a fever since Friday after school so I might have fewer days at work than anticipated. Poor kid but if he was going to get sick, at least he is getting it over with before our trip. Three trips ago he ended up getting a bad cold mid way through our stay and he was pretty miserable. Two trips ago both he and DH ended up either getting a stomach bug or a combination of too much sun and too little water and they were both

I have 7 (yes, seven!) weather apps on my phone and I keep checking the weather in Anaheim and I agree, it looks like the weather is amazing, some even have it going up to the high 20's! :beach: Living in Victoria, we always have mild winters compared to the rest of Canada but this one has been quite lovely. We had one day where there was a tiny bit of snow (less than a cm) and a couple of days that got cold (Victoria cold, so negative 4!) but otherwise it has been averaging 9-11C. Heck, my neighbours even have daffodils blooming in their yard! :flower3:
