I know there is a cake thread with pictures of different cakes people have had made, but I wanted to know which cake the Disney pastry chefs have made that actually tasted as good as it looks!?! It seems like everyone says they aren't worth the price. The whole family is going in two weeks for my nephew's birthday, and we want to do something special for him. He LOVES little einsteins, and we are staying at the contemporary.. Any and all honest, personal experiences are wanted! Thanks everyone!

Here is the GORGEOUS Tinkerbell cake that Brian from the Contemporary made for my daughter..this cake was soooooo much more than I had expected..it was truly a work of art!!!! Thanks so much Brian..my daughter was one VERY HAPPY little girl!!!!!!!

Hi there, everyone! I'm trying to figure out just how to go about getting a cake for my boyfriend's birthday, but I haven't done it before and i'm a bit confused...would someone be willing to answer my questions for me? It would help so much.

1. We're eating at the Biergarten at request of the birthday boy. I know that they have some sort of pre-made cakes at the Disney restaurants, but we wanted to treat him to a fancy cake with a Chesire Cat theme. What are our options in getting the cake there? Is it just pick-up at the Boardwalk Bakery? If not, what other places would be able to get our cake to the area? (I had called the cake hotline, but I was forced to hang up before I got to talk to anyone. But I remember there was an option direct to the Biergarten and other epcot restaurants. Is that only for the pre-made, or to have cakes delivered there?)

2. If we are limited to the Boardwalk Bakery, are there any chefs that you would recommend I request? I really, really want this to be a beautiful cake for him.

3. If we have to pick up the cake at the Boardwalk Bakery, can we give it to the staff of the Biergarten and ask for them to bring it out at a certain time of the meal?

THanks so much in advance, and I hope you can help!

I do not believe Biergarten does custom cakes. It is those lovely pre-made cakes.

Not sure about the chef at Boardwalk.

As far as the restaurant holding it... I do not think they are allowed to do that for health code reasons. I have heard others talk about other restaurants not willing to hold items for them. :confused3

Maybe someone else has a better answer.

Gorgeous cake. I will be ordering a Pochantes (?) cake, I hope from the California Grill, the night we dine there on our May trip on my son's gf's bday. Would love to use this as a sorta of reference but with a different character, what was the cost and did they offer you various flavors?

We got ours at Chef Mickey's and it was one of the best cakes I have ever had. Chef Brian made it, and I've read that Contemporary has some of the best cakes at WDW! Bavarian creme, chocolate icing... It was amazing, here's a couple pics...

thanks for the pictures! That cake looks amazing! did you eat the fondant or just peel it back to get to the buttercream? :)

My only Disney cake experience was my wedding cake but it was delicious!! I think they are made at the GF bakery - I had 2 layers...the bottom was lemon cake with cream cheese filling and the top layer was chocolate cake with peanut butter cup mousse filling. It was amazing - some of the best cake I have ever had. It was VERY expensive but in the grand scheme of things worth it because it was the coolest wedding cake I have ever had!!

:rotfl:
I always wondered if Ace of Cakes, Cake Boss, Food Network Challenge, Cupcake Wars, etc. cakes had good flavor. I wonder no more. :upsidedow

Well, I can attest to Cake Boss cakes. My family has routinely gotten our birthday cakes from Carlo's Bakery for years, and they are out of this world. Now, since his show, we haven't gotten any crazy, decorated cakes (and actually, we've only gotten 2 since the show started because they are horribly swamped and more of a tourist attraction now), but we've never been disappointed with the cakes from there.

Our cake from Brian at the Contemporary was also one of the best cakes I've had, decoration and taste wise! I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I'm often one to say, "You're the artist, use your judgement" as well, so I can relate. I actually just told a baker that this week for my DD3 and DS1's joint birthday cake! Ha! Now I'm nervous!

Just curious, with the super fancy cakes, like the Tink one a few posts back how edible are all the decorations? I know technically they are edible, but I've heard the fondant isn't too tasty and the flowers on the cake look like they are also fondant? So is all that decoration on a cake like that for show and just gets wasted, not eaten? (trying to decide on the degree of decoration for a cake I'm planning and am not sure I would want to pay big bucks for a lot of fancy decoration that would just get thrown away).

Hey there! So, I got these little goodies on my trip in October(sorry so late!) where I had gotten engaged:lovestruc (To see the details, go to the link in my sig)

Anyways, the cake I got from my DF at Jiko's, A Cooking Place. He told me that he placed the order with the chef there. It was quoted at $95 but when we received the bill, it was only $45!! It was awesome and tasty too!

Here are the pics:

The second little surprise that I gave to him was a platter done by Private Dining. I didn't remember to take a picture until halfway through the goods! :rotfl2:

This was comprised of an assortment of cookies, Animal Kingdom Lodge Chocolate with logo, truffles and chocolate covered strawberries. It was nicely done with two glasses of milk on the side. I can't remember exactly what the price was, since they were all a la carte items smushed together. I think it came to $65 but then again, it could have been $35. I truly just don't remember.:confused3

Here are some pics(sorry for the green tint, was having some trouble with my camera at this point:sad2::

We had a custom cake at CRT in September that was done by the bakery at the Contemporary. I delt with Brian and he was amazing. We mostly communicated via email and he created the most amazing cake! It was a white cake with vanilla buttercream icing (chocolate alergies in the group otherwise I would have prefered something else...but for vanilla it was VERY good) I sent Brian some ideas that I had for the cake via email before our trip and then when we arrived I had the consierge at our hotel send him some Princess figurines which he incorporated into the cake design. The cake was a 10 inch cake and the cost was only $45 plus tax and gratuity, in all I think the total was around $59. This cake was huge though!!! There were seven of us in our party and we only ate less than 1/3 of the cake...they were willing to box it up and let us take the remainder back to the hotel but we decided to share with the families around us instead. The girls had a great time delivering their birthday cake to the tables around us!

I will attempt to post a picture of this cake for everyone to see...also, if you would like Brian's email address and phone number or any other details please feel free to PM me.

FABULOUS CAKE BEAUTIFUL:wizard:

Are there certain hours it's better to reach someone at the Contemporary bakery? I've tried the number Brian gave me several times and I always get voicemail. I've left messages but have not received a response. I'm going to try again today, but if there are better times to reach someone I'd like to try.

Thank you!

I have called between 3&4 pm and got through to someone

I'm a bit late but finally making it back to report on our cake that was delivered to Whispering Canyon from the Contemporary's bakery on 11/11/10.

Here's what I learned: do NOT approach ordering a cake the way you would any other piece of art by allowing the artist creative freedom. I've always subscribed to the belief that a true artist who is given creative freedom will produce their best work. Not so with cakes, I suppose. :confused3 I ordered a chocolate cake with buttercream frosting/filling with Steamboat Willie for the theme for my 13 yro's belated birthday. Fondant was okay as long as there was a good buttercream coat underneath. I didn't request a specific budget when ordering. I was willing to pay a heckuva lot more than the $65 I was quoted. Anywhoo, here's what we got:

I was a tad disappointed after seeing so many amazing, creative cakes come from the Contemporary's bakery. I can't really complain, tho, considering I wasn't specific down to every minute detail. That was my mistake. I thought I was being nice by not being a nit-picker. :lmao: Was it $65 worth? The cake wasn't but my son's excitement at seeing his favorite SBW image on a cake was. The cake just seemed like a bunch of elements tossed onto a cake. There's no real thought or design, no cohesion with the decorative elements. I've certainly made much better creative themed cakes. LOL! As for the cake taste/flavor...hhmmmm...it was moist. The cake part tasted okay. The frosting...not sure what that was...it was somewhat sweet so it wasn't that whipped icky stuff but there wasn't much buttery flavor so I wouldn't call that buttercream. I think I'm spoiled to true buttercream (I make my own whenever I bake cakes).

Sooooo, lesson learned: be specific and be the annoying nit-picker on the details. Do NOT do the creative freedom thing. Would I do it again? Probably not. Just on taste alone, I can do waaaay better with a couple boxes of Betty Crocker & my buttercream recipe for less than $10. :thumbsup2

You know that is EXACTLY what I did wrong as well. I said to the Contemporary make me a Grumpy cake, here is how much I want to spend, now make it awesome.

But you know what? I shouldn't have to design the cake too when I call them with a request. Arent they supposed to be the experts at that? What do people do that don't read these boards? Do they all get basically the same cake? I would guess so.

Will I ever order another cake? Probably not. However, if I had the time to go back and forth with the pastry chef and search the web for designs and such maybe. We just can't all do that.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had ever ordered a cake to take on the Illuminations cruise? If so, does someone deliver it to the boat, or do you carry it on yourself? Or maybe this isn't even allowed. Second option would be that we're eating dinner that night at Teppan Edo - do I have any options to be delivered there? I'm hoping to get a Mad Hatter style cake for my daughter's 8th birthday.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

My daughter will be celebrating her 7th birthday at a late breakfast at CRT. We are already having a tinkerbell cake in the room (Publix) but I would like to make the breakfast a real 'party.' Any idea what they can/will do for us there if I call ahead and mention that I want to make it really special. I'm not looking for just the free stuff, I am willing to pay if required. TIA

Thank you all for sharing your pictures and thoughts. I ordered my cake with a little Einstein theme and promise I will post pics after I go in a couple weeks. Fingers crossed mine is as delicious and beautiful as yours were! :goodvibes

Actually, for the same cake, the quality is the same.
. . . the recipe does not change form resort-to-resort bakery
. . . the recipe is actually a formula, so they can't alter it
. . . baking is not like cooking, where individuals can experiment
. . . they must follow the formula or it doesn't turn out
. . . however, bakeries do have their own specialty items
. . . these are not usually put into the other kitchens
. . . this allows individuality

NOTE: Our daughter was a pastry-chef culinary-intern at WDW and was moved from bakery-to-bakery. The formulas for the same product were never altered among kitchens.
