Official DISNEY Cake Chatter Thread - Part II

If this is the case I'm totally perplexed with all the people who state that the cake they received from WDW's bakeries was the best-tasting cake they'd ever had. Ours wasn't very flavorful at all. The cake was pretty bland albeit moist and the frosting not very buttery or sweet. Seriously. I'm totally not one of those all-around picky-petunias on an everyday basis. If what we had was what others call "best" in flavor...golly...I'd like to invite everyone to my house for cake. I believe I can make the earth move, the heavens open, and angels sing. And I don't even like baking.

Having had two very different experiences with the same cake flavor & filling combination, I have a hard time believing it is really that standardized. If it is, either someone messed up the formula or some of the cakes aren't made as fresh as others or something, because the two cakes we got were both white cake with strawberries-in-custard filling but they did not have the same taste or texture. We enjoyed both, but the first was great while the second was just pretty good. :confused3

Just curious, with the super fancy cakes, like the Tink one a few posts back how edible are all the decorations? I know technically they are edible, but I've heard the fondant isn't too tasty and the flowers on the cake look like they are also fondant? So is all that decoration on a cake like that for show and just gets wasted, not eaten? (trying to decide on the degree of decoration for a cake I'm planning and am not sure I would want to pay big bucks for a lot of fancy decoration that would just get thrown away).

Yes, technically they are edible, but they are only designed to look good, not taste good. You are definitely paying for the effort that goes into fancy decorations, not for the flavor.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had ever ordered a cake to take on the Illuminations cruise? If so, does someone deliver it to the boat, or do you carry it on yourself? Or maybe this isn't even allowed. Second option would be that we're eating dinner that night at Teppan Edo - do I have any options to be delivered there? I'm hoping to get a Mad Hatter style cake for my daughter's 8th birthday.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Yes, you would oder it through the Yacht & Beach Club's private dining. They will deliver it to the boat. The options at Teppan Edo are your typical Epcot whipped cream-covered, screen-printed cakes.

My daughter will be celebrating her 7th birthday at a late breakfast at CRT. We are already having a tinkerbell cake in the room (Publix) but I would like to make the breakfast a real 'party.' Any idea what they can/will do for us there if I call ahead and mention that I want to make it really special. I'm not looking for just the free stuff, I am willing to pay if required. TIA

Most of the stuff you can order as enhancements at CRT is "romance"-related, like toasting flutes and the glass slipper. They should have a free birthday cupcake for her though if you mention it when you get there.

Ok- I have combed through the thread as best I can, and I want opinions and suggestions....My DD's 5th birthday is Feb. 21st (President's Day). We are there for 7 days, and here are the ADRs we have going on where I could do her cake:

2/18- 1900 Park Fare Dinner
2/20- Akershus (Lunch)
2/20- Yachtsman Steakhouse (Dinner)
-Right after dinner, we are taking an Illuminations Cruise- cake on the boat?
2/21- CRT (Lunch) (Actually her B-Day- was going to do slipper dessert maybe?)
2/21- Ohana (Dinner)

So, when would YOU do a cake?

CRT I could work something out w/ the CR, but I don't really want to pay that delivery fee. I think that the Slipper will be ok here...

Apparently, CR already makes all the cakes for the MK, so there shouldn't be a delivery fee. The only time I've ever paid one is to get a GF Bakery cake to an Epcot dessert party.

I would go with a CR Cake at CRT since they do some of the fanciest cakes, it is her actual birthday, and you still have some trip left to eat the leftovers (at least I think you do!). The only trick would be toting it around for the rest of the day, unless you could prevail upon CRT to keep it in the fridge for you.

If this is the case I'm totally perplexed with all the people who state that the cake they received from WDW's bakeries was the best-tasting cake they'd ever had.

Yeah, I think this is where personal taste (or perhaps even amount of previous experience with commercial cakes) comes in, cuz I'm with you! I prefer "gourmet homemade" cakes like you find at small independent bakeries, and you're just not going to get those from a huge outfit like Disney. Their process for making the cakes is not conducive to that.

Thanks for the advice! I didn't realize there was no delivery fee for the Contemporary to CRT. If that is the case, I think you're spot on. We will be there 2 more days (checking out on the 23rd).

That day is President's Day and the Park is likely to be insane. Our plans were to leave MK right after we were finished at CRT and go explore (read: shop) at Downtown Disney afterward. We will have a car, so we will just stop by the room on the way :).

Now, can someone please PM me Brian (at the CR)'s email address?

That is the correct process, yes? Email him, get the details hashed out, and then call the cake line to actually order it to the specifics of what we worked out?

Has anyone seen a Tangled/Rapunzel cake come out of the Disney bakeries?

Here's one I like but I want one tier! Mainly Caused cakes at Disney can be costly! however I love the color and the design I hate fondant so I would want only butter cream! They can do fondant or molding chocolate for the flowers and leaves and Do a tink topper with her Fairy friends around the cake!

Plus more than one tier will be too much to eat and I would have to share it with others around me! That would prolly piss of the CM of the restaurant!!

Also like this one but with a Minni chocolate cake topper! Question will the bakery use fresh flowers instead if I want!

Where is Brian located at? Heard he was good! I need help with that information!

Please I need help deciding which one! I like the above three but would really love some input! Also any information on where and how to get ahold of Brian would be helpful! Please please please!

To get in touch with Brian, call the Contemporary Resort at (407) 824-1000 and ask to speak to someone in Private Dining about a custom cake. From there you can ask for his email address.

As for which cake to choose, I prefer the Minnie Mouse one and you said Brooklyn had a great reaction to it.

I ordered one for my niece in December, just don't be in the buffet line when they annouce they are celebrating special things, that is when they brought out the slipper and we weren't at the table!:scared1: But it was all good- she loved it and it was great!:woohoo:

Thats what happened to us too. We were not at the table when they borught it out and they actually placed it at my seat instead of DD's.

So many good tips from everyone. We are going in April and would like to surprise my daughter on her 6th b-day with a special cake at the CRT. Does anyone know if they will do the chocolate ganache on cakes at the CR?

I noticed someone ordered one at AKL...but I didn't see where they ordered it from. I would like to get a cool custom cake for our 4th anniversary (we were married in wdw four years ago). I have done this before, but through GF bakery.

How about AKL? Do you call the cake hotline or AKL private dining or maybe Jiko? I was thinking of having it delivered to Jiko. We are staying at kidani.

You call the cake hotline & follow the prompts until you get to AKL. They made our cake at Jambo and it was delivered to Kidani. But based on my personal experience I would recommend having a custom cake done somewhere else, or stick with the zebra cake. Just saying... good luck.

I have just ordered a cake for my dd's 3 rd birthday at CRT . Brian was just amazing, he has been e mailing me with options the past few days. We have ordered an 8 inch cake with pink icing and butter cream filling with Disney princess toppers. I will post some pics when we get back :)

Hi Mary! So the deal is, there was this one cool custom cake from AKL that someone posted last year, so a bunch of people tried ordering similar ones and were totally disappointed with the results. Now when you call AKL's Private Dining, they say that they can't do fancy cakes. But it's worth talking to them about what you want to see what they say. You'd just call AK and ask to be transferred to Private Dining, then tell them you want to speak with the pastry chef about a fancy custom cake.

You could also try working with GF Private Dining to have one made and then pay a delivery fee (usually around $75) to have it sent, say, to your room or Jiko.

Hello~:goodvibes

So my party decided our only option to get a fancy cake (Since we aren't staying at a deluxe hotel and eating at the biergarten for the birthday dinner night) is to pick one up at the Boardwalk Bakery and have a small party after dinner. I called and was given the names and emails of two chefs: Yolanda and Deran. Does anyone know anything about these two/have a suggestion to who I should email? Or, should I email them both with the same request and see what each has to say about it?

(just a little detail, we're potentially getting a Mad Hatter Hat cake (just not the tippy kind since those are so expensive) and putting a chesire cat ruffle-fondant layer on top. I'm so excited to surprise him with it!)

Well, I called the Contemporary Private Dining, spoke with someone who was going to take my order, then I mentioned I had some questions for the Pastry Chef about cake design and that I'd seen some cakes of his on the DIS, lol. She gave me Brian's email address and I have written him, I emailed him yesterday... now I'm just checking my inbox like a nervous schoolgirl waiting to hear from the boy she likes, lol!!

I think I'd like a round cake with Cinderella blue icing and some flowers, with a white chocolate slipper and a tiara on it. No fondant, so hopefully it won't be too complicated and he can work something out. It's a really special trip for us in lots of ways and this would be great!

How long should I wait before sending a follow up email? I don't want to wait too long, we leave in two weeks!

Yeah, that's a bummer. We are dining at Narcoosee's so I guess I can stick with the GF! Now to come up with a design lol. Thanks lurkyloo.

So excited!! I ordered DH's surprise birthday cake the other day! I'm doing a mad hatter with a hand painted Mickey on top. Can't wait to see it! DH is gonna be so mad! He hates surprises, but it's his 30th so I needed to do it! I will post pictures when I get back!

I emailed Brian at the CR on Monday and haven't heard back from him yet. I was concerned maybe I had the wrong email address or something, so I gave another call today to Private Dining. The woman on the phone said that he usually gets back to folks within a day or two and that she'd leave him a note to look back through his emails from Monday, and told me to email him again (which I did)...so I'm still waiting!

The good news is, I think that the wait time has given me room to think on it and decide what I'd really like, lol!

How does this sound?

A non-character specific cinderella-blue and white iced cake with a tiara and 'glass (white chocolate w/ the sparkly stuff on it)' slipper and some flowers? DD's favorite color is blue...

Is there a list of available fillings anywhere?

ETA- nevermind, I searched and found the list!

Can you forward me the list? I see the short one, but also see everyone else requesting different things? :confused3

TIA!

Just wanted to let everyone know the options I just got for ordering a cake at Epcot's Akershus.
Flavors: Chocolate with chocolate
Vanilla with vanilla
6" podium cake with mickey plaque (cannot be personalized) $21
8" cake with princess plaque (with 8 princesses) personalized $32
Mickey head cake (cannot be personalized) $48
I ended up going with the 8" vanilla. Im not expecting anything great but this is our favorite character dining location so had to get my daughters birthday cake here:) Will review in a few weeks.

How long does it take for your photo to be moved to the gallery?? I posted mine a few weeks back, and it is still not there?? :confused3

Just curious.
