Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part IV! (2012-2016)

We just got back from WDW and I wanted to share pics of the cakes we got this trip.

1. I had wanted the Contemporary to do a Donald Duck themed cake for my daughter, but they came in with a surprisingly high quote and a vague response on how their design would differ from my request. So, I went with plan B and reached out to Amorette's Patisserie in Disney Springs. They don't deliver, but they do have a few tables and we did have a dinner ADR at Raglan Road that night...so, it sounded like a good plan. We went with the Donald Duck dome cake, which is a vanilla chiffon cake, lemon buttercream (more mousse-like), blueberry fruit pate, and candy crisps. The dome cakes are $65 + tax and they will personalize it with a name...like a regular set of Mickey ears. The ears and accent pieces are painted white chocolate, and while some of the decorations are fondant, the shiny coating is actually a glaze. There's a great video on YouTube of how they make these cakes.

They also box the cakes up in these cute boxes...

I didn't take a pic, but they will bag the cake with all kinds of tissue paper and they included a hand written thank you note. I also forgot to take a pic of the cut cake. Sorry...but it made for a great late night snack throughout the course of our trip :D

While my older daughter wasn't a fan of the flavors, the rest of us thought it was delicious. The blueberry pate reminded me of my grandmother's homemade blueberry pie filling and was such a wonderful compliment to the lemon.

2. We ordered a Haunted Mansion cake for our farewell meal. The writing on the front of the cake says it all. It's a 6" chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and chocolate ganache. I was quoted $110, but I was billed $106 and change after tax. What's really nice, since we had it delivered to Kona in the Poly, I was billed ahead of time and didn't have it factored in with my gratuity on the meal. The cake was adorable, really tasty, and we made it home with some leftovers.

@TiggerTrigger, I love the Donald Duck cake, too!! Do you think they would fit in the mini-fridges that are in the on-site hotel rooms?

I just finished ordering a mini cake from Epcot to be delivered to Garden Grill for my birthday in August. I called the Epcot number on this post and left a message on Sunday, about 3 weeks before my birthday. I received an email from Theresa Tuesday morning with cake information, prices, and example pictures.

I emailed her a picture of a Minnie Mouse Cake I liked and she sent me a few pictures of Minnie mini cakes. I chose this one, but with some yellow details as well.

Mini Cake – vanilla cake/white chocolate mousse/white buttercream and red fondant with blank band around the bottoms of the cake

White bead board with red and yellow bows

White Minnie heads/dots on side of cake

Black bow with red & white polka dots

I was quoted $45.00 plus tax

I called HS cake line & talked with Franchesca, super nice. She told me then that they don't do mad hatter cakes, but I sent a pic anyway. Well I waited 2 days to get a totally vague response about my cake.

Heres the email I sent

I would like to order a custom cake. I would like it to serve 6 people, with some leftovers.

We have a dining reservation for August 1st @ 6:10 pm

My initial idea for a cake was the mad hatter style (crooked cake) with vanilla cake with strawberry filling and whipped icing. But of course I can be somewhat flexible.

original style I liked but understand if not available

Here are several other cake ideas I like:

1. Love this Mickey head, but it needs a bow to become a Minnie instead -grad cap & writing in royal blue.

2. I Like the Snow White inspired colors shown above, but would like Minnie ears with a grad cap instead of bow

3. Love the above Minnie cake as is

4. Like this one too - seems to be too small for our needs though(and a not so tall grad cap) would like royal blue for the Mickeys & border

As you can tell there are many styles I like. I really think we had better go with buttercream since we will be in the park a while after supper - I think that icing won't melt as quick.

Thanks,

And here's the reply I got from her today.....

Hello,

It would $150 for the requested custom cake request.

If you would like to proceed then please fill out the info below.

Please submit the following information for your cake order:

UMMMM really? I'm supposed to pay $150 for some unknown cake!?!?!?! I don't have a clue what size the cake will be, not to mention what it will look like. UGH!!!!! I sent her an email asking her what it would look like & what size. No answer of course - guess I'll hear tomorrow. Though she said that everything needed to be finalized yesterday.

Can you give me info on how to order from them? Looks like I may change our plans since they only gave a quote with no specifics. Now we've got to find a place to eat....ugh

Just FYI, buttercream cakes actually melt much faster than fondant-covered ones. I'll be interested to see what they come up with for you, since the official policy is they don't do fancy custom cakes, just buttercream-covered supermarket-style cakes with screen prints.

ahh so HS doesn't do custom at all? I totally misunderstood that - with all my reading I guess I confused myself. We only have 2 ADR, both in parks. 50s Primt & Tusker House. So I guess we are out of luck.

Gonna go search for info on that Disney Springs bakery....

My husband had one delivered to our room at the Poly several years ago that was great...it had a lei of (fondant) tropical flowers draped over chocolate ganache. That gave it a neat look without a fully fondant covered cake. Not turning up a photo right now, unfortunately.

I'm finally ready to give up and ask for help! Lol.
Last year, on our first trip, we ate at 'Ohana our first night, and I ordered the Mickey cake. It was a great surprise! And the flavors were wonderful. But, we were eating leftover cake allll week. Not usually a problem, but I missed out on trying so many great snacks! There were 8 of us, but we all had the bread pudding too so hardly made a dent in the cake at dinner.
So, this year, I wanted to get something smaller, maybe an 8 inch, and have it delivered to 'Ohana again. I want it to have some kind of Poly theme, the kids just love it there so much - I was thinking tropical flowers, maybe? BUT I want it to be buttercream, not fondant - to save money and also because we don't care for fondant. I Googled, but of course most cakes there are fondant. (Saw some awesome tiki cakes too!)
So, anyone with some good tropical themed cakes? Or any other ideas?

She replied back to me & said any of the cakes could be done for $150. Really? HMM she told me the madhatter was a no from the get go. I'm not liking the surprise factor when I've seen some of the posts on here where the cakes weren't liked, that's a lot to dump into the unknown.

It's really so weird it's not handled more professionally than this

@moodyeeyore We could not fit ours in our mini fridge...at least not in the box they provided. I took out some of the shelves and turned it sideways (which normally works with a WDW bakery cake box), but the hat-style box was just too big. I guess you could bring a container from home to re-box the cake in the room for fridge storage.

@luvmyfam444 I used a phone number I found on one the Disney Food Blog posts.
407-934-3500

I called, left a message, and received a call back within a couple of hours. They were very thorough and patient/professional with all of my questions. The girl even put me on hold once so she could speak directly to a chef with some of my concerns. The in person service was great too. They are open late (like 11 or 11:30), so it should work well with a lot of dinner plans in Disney Springs. The only frustrating part is that you have to go them...i.e. not as seamless as a cake experience at a WDW bakery serviced restaurant.

Thanks for the info -
are the flavors changeable? I saw online a description of them, but I'm afraid none of us would eat them. We want a somewhat normal flavored cake.

That was one of my issues. While they may change this down the road...the flavors are set, at least from what I was told. I know my older child would have preferred the flavors of the Goofy cake in her Donald cake.

I mean, if they're offering to do a fancy cake for you, maybe they're gonna rise to the occasion like they did with the cake for our TOT party. But like you say, that's a lot to pay when you have no idea what you're going to get!

I emailed her & asked if we could bring the price down to $100. she asked which cake was my fav, I told her which 2 I liked best. She said she'd have to see what the chef says about the price.

I also sent an email asking what a graduation screen print would look like & that wasn't answered.

SOOOO now I wait again.

It's too late now to order from the bakery for Disney Springs - it says 72 hr notice. & I just don't think we could do these weird flavors. UGH

Oooh, great idea! Pat from the GF and I are playing phone tag, so as soon as I get ahold of her I will see what she says. That Mickey cake we had last year had ganache and it was delicious!

today I sent another email, since I didn't hear anything back yesterday. I gave all the info requested but I also mentioned that I didn't like ordering a cake blindly, knowing nothing about look, flavor or cost. She wrote back & said the chef could do the mini cake for $100. Don't have a clue what flavor we'll get, she didn't confirm any of that. Hopefully it'll be okay. I'll let you know in a few days

$100 for a mini-cake? That's like 2 cupcakes in size, if it's the same as a mini-cakes we've seen! Maybe you have lots of decorations or something? None of the images you posted came through... can you repost? I am hoping I am misunderstanding what you ordered! Two years ago, we ordered a 6" cake for DD's 21st birthday at Jiko. It was three layers of red velvet cake with white chocolate mousse/fresh raspberry filling, with white chocolate buttercream frosting. Frosting was pinkish-purpleish with Mickey heads piped around the edges and 3 tropical flowers on top. I think I was quoted $32 plus tax and tip.
