Need some advise from the wise cakes ones here!
We are going to Disney mid-Sept, it will be both my son's and my birthday when we go. :teeth: I'd really like to do one of the specialty cakes on our last night - dinner at the Poly. There will be a total of 3 adults and 1 toddler.
Would a mini-cake be enough or do you think we should go with the 6"? Since our last night I'd rather not have to worry about leftovers.

I think it depends on how much you like cake. I know people have posted here that several people shared a mini but for me I easily eat half of that for dessert and finished off the other half for breakfast the next day. But when I order a cake I want to eat cake not just have a taste.

I have been contacting the bakeries in regards to vegan cakes and this is what I have learned. Animal Kingdom Lodge does not make vegan cakes, they encouraged me to contact McKenna's Bakery. Magic Kingdom offers vegan cakes in chocolate or vanilla, they will print an image on the cake. The Contemporary and Grand Floridian will make a customized vegan cake in chocolate or vanilla, the Grand Floridian also offers a strawberry filling.
I also asked about fondant ingredients and was told there is no gelatin in the fondant, and that it was suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Good evening.

I'm hoping someone can help me, since I've never done anything like this before!

Me and my wife love Disney! We enjoy it every time we get to go. My wife even loves getting photos and autographs from all the characters, and we have no kids! :lmao:But the two of us love it there at Disney World. We are going over there this April to see the Flower Festival for the first time, but there is just one problem... It's her birthday and I have no idea what to do for a cake!

I really want to get a nice, fantastic custom cake for her, because she deserves it... But I have no idea about a design, let alone what to get with it! It's just the two of us, so nothing huge. She loves chocolate and strawberries... Especially chocolate covered strawberries! I'm not sure what she thinks about fondant... I'm pretty sure I've never had it so I dunno what the taste/texture is like. Or how sweet the buttercream would be.

She loves everything about Disney... From Princesses to Villians... Dragons (magic) to Alians(Stitch!)... Just about everything! I just have no idea on what to do, I'm so lost!

All the cakes here look amazing, can anyone give me ideas on what I can do to make her day a lot more magical? We're staying at Pop, but I was thinking of having the cake at Magic Kingdom at our 9pm dining dinner at Be Our Guest, since that's her favorite restaurant. :) Anything would be helpful. So thank you!!!

I'm still looking through all these threads, but has anyone ordered or seen a Jungle Cruise cake? Or an IASWA? Looking for more adult than kiddie themed. Thanks!!

ETA: I just saw that IASWA cake above. So pretty!! I love that monorail one too.

What if you got her a chocolate cake with fresh-strawberry filling and chocolate-covered strawberries ON it? It would have to be a bigger size to fit them, but I'll be the Contemporary (who makes the cakes for BOG) could do something amazing!

Or maybe, since she likes all the characters, you could do a cake themed to Be Our Guest/Beauty and the Beast. Cakes that look like Belle's dress are popular, but if you wanted to be really inside-baseball about it, you could have them try to replicate one of the cakes from the "Be Our Guest" scene in the movie!

I did a jungle-themed cake for my husband at AKL that might be kind of what you're looking for...

I like Lurkyloo's ideas a lot but one thing I wanted to mention since you weren't sure how you felt about fondant is that they can make a cake with buttercream underneath the fondant. I did this for the last cake I got for DH since I know he doesn't like the taste of fondant but I wanted the look of it. It was easy to peel off and enjoy the cake without it.

Yes! In fact, pretty much every professional bakery, including all the ones at Walt Disney World, puts buttercream underneath the fondant. It's how they adhere the fondant to the cake.

Have gone back and forth with the Magic Kingdom cakes email a few times, and was given two Mickey Mouse playing baseball pictures to choose from and quoted at $89 for the six inch cake.

Just got back from our trip and wanted to share pictures of our amazing cake from BOG!!! it came out just as I imagined!

So to follow up the Small World wedding cake I posted on the previous page, the bride has given me permission to post photos of the replica smaller cakes she had made for her anniversaries. These are not mini cakes, but they're still a great inspiration if you're looking to do a 6-inch round or a full-size two-tier cake.

So excited that this is actually getting close for me to start doing some cake ordering and real planning. My husband and I will be at WDW in April for the Dark Side 10K race which is also falling on his birthday weekend. For his birthday, he chose a dinner reservation at Be Our Guest (his favorite in-park restaurant). He's a definite cake fiend, so I figured this would be a great, special gift for his birthday.

I'm struggling on theme, but since we're there for Star Wars (and we're both uber nerds) I figured I might lean in that direction. A few pages back, LurkyLoo suggested emailing the Comtemporary pastry chef to see if there are restrictions on character/theme, so I sent that email just a little bit ago. Not sure how responsive they are there, but we'll see! First time for everything right?

Question for the group from a newbie, though. I'm really thinking of a vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, and I'm hoping to maybe to fresh strawberries as a filling. Here's where the question part comes in.

I have been debating on a mini cake or a 6" cake. I know we'd have leftovers for the 6", so I'll have to transport those for the rest of the evening which is kind of a bummer. However, I wasn't certain they would do a special filling on a mini cake. Anyone have any tips/thoughts that might help me make my decision?

Thank you in advance for your help!

We were offered strawberries a few years ago for a mini, but I have read more recently that fresh fruit is not an option for mini cakes. It seems to be the only restriction on fillings. Not sure if they make exceptions to that or not dependent on the bakery. But I will say I skipped it because the charge for the filling on such a tiny cake wasn't worth it IMO. It was something like $10 and would probably amount to only 1 strawberry.

If it can't be done my thoughts would be if you are in a park you could rent a locker and leave it there and go about your evening. Or in reality often the cost between a 6 inch and a mini is very minimal. So if you aren't paying that much more I wouldn't worry about wasting a little bit of cake as long as you got what you wanted.

I would emphasize your point even more to say that sometimes 6 inch cakes are actually cheaper than mini cakes. I'm not sure why, maybe the labour is the biggest factor? but in any case, I've definitely paid less for a 6". I think the cost of special flavours/fillings is a flat rate--the same 10 bucks will get much more filling in a larger cake.

I've done both sizes for just myself and DP. We had a ton of leftovers from the 6" cake (I carried the box around MK for the evening--it wasn't really a big deal) and we planned on snacking on the cake in our room. That didn't really happen--I don't think either of us had any more of it. I think in the future I might just offer to share some cake with a nearby table or something so it doesn't go to waste.

Thought you guys would get a kick out of this: I got permission to post these pics from a recent Walt Disney World wedding where the bride chose to have the Grand Floridian pastry team make multiple 8-inch cakes, each themed to a different Disney princess, instead of a traditional wedding cake. See if you can guess them! :teeth:

LOVE THESE

Does anybody know if there are any restrictions on Star Wars characters? I'm thinking about ordering a mini cake for my husband since we'll be in Disney World a couple weeks before his birthday. I'd like to do a Boba Fett or Darth Vader cake for him. I'm contemplating having it brought to our dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table or to Chef Mickey's.
there was when I tried to get one last year. They had two choices for me. I know they have Jedi Mickey chocolate figurine though.
