Official D23 Expo schedule thread; August 19-21, Anaheim (Updated 8/17, post #179)

So I have been reading stuff like crazy and looked thru all of the Expo Guide PDF and the presentations. Most of the things that interest me will be in the Arena, Stage 23 and Stage 28.

I am trying to get a handle on where the bottlenecks will be. The Arena seems to be sufficiently large that it will be an easy venue to get into. Which means I will not have to line up insanely early for the Arena. However Stages 23 and 28 are much smaller and may require lining up really early.

Which all basically means that I can go to other venues and presentations before Arena presentations and still get into the Arena, but for Stages 23 and 28 I need to be careful what I do before those presentations because I may be too late to the queue.

Does that sound right?

Further, on Saturday there are a series of three afternoon presentations all in Stage 28 and I want to see them all. But it sounds like they will clear Stage 28 after each presentation so unless the line is short for each one there will be no way to catch all three.

Is that what I should expect?

:wizard:

Yes..sounds right. Yes, they WILL clear rooms. Last time the Arena could be gotten into at last minute, but since the room holds only 4,000, if a bigger crowd comes this could be a problem. I think the 2 highest attended there will be Studios and Parks..those may fill up without everyone getting in. You can see the que from the floor..if it looks like it's filling up scary fast you can get in line. The other venues look like they have holding pens this time to cut down on all the line cutting and stuff that went on last time. I'm guessing they will stop allowing people to go into those pens when room would be full. They may have a small standby line I guess? For Sorcerers who said they were doing a presentation and don't show? We'll see.
Read a rumor that they stopped production on Lone Ranger..ohhh nooo..hope not.

Company’s Award-Winning Full HD 3D Products
To Be Showcased At The Ultimate Disney Fan Event

From Disney's D23 Press Release:
BURBANK, Calif. – August 15, 2011 – Panasonic has become the exclusive consumer electronics sponsor of Disney’s D23 Expo 2011, held August 19-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center, which is adjacent to the iconic Disneyland Resort.

The agreement was announced today by Steven Clark, Head of D23, and Eisuke Tsuyuzaki, Chief Technology Officer, Panasonic Corporation of North America.

“D23’s first signature event surpassed all of our expectations, and our 2011 Expo is already shaping up to be a jaw-dropping, not-to-be missed showcase of the best and brightest Disney has to offer,” said Steven Clark, head of D23. “We’re thrilled that Panasonic will be joining us for the festivities.”

This year’s D23 Expo brings together two 3D pioneers: Panasonic, the acknowledged leader in 3D for the home, which offers an extensive lineup of the finest 3D plasma and LCD displays plus award-winning 3D-capable Blu-ray™ disc players; and The Walt Disney Studios, an industry leader in the creation and distribution of digital 3D filmed entertainment.

“There is a great fit between our two brands,” said Panasonic’s Eisuke Tsuyuzaki. “The Walt Disney Studios makes incredible 3D entertainment, and there’s no better way to watch it in the home than on a Panasonic VIERA Full HD 3D TV. The D23 Expo is the perfect venue for us to showcase our latest offerings to Disney’s enthusiastic and loyal fan base.”

The first D23 Expo attracted nearly 40,000 Disney fans, bringing the entire world of Disney to one central location. During the D23 Expo, fans were treated to appearances by superstars; explored exciting, new concepts and attractions from Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and Walt Disney Imagineering; peered into Disney’s history at special panels, presentations and displays; and discovered the newest entertainment, products and events from throughout The Walt Disney Company.

I was there in 2009, they WILL take your camera/ipod/iphone anything that could possibley have a camera away for the big presentations and return it at the end. You can't hide it as the security guards will have wands (at least they did in 2009).
Thanks!

It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on things. One thing that remains to be seen is how they handle the queues.

OK last night I took some time to really study the guide book and I looked at the map. It seems that D23 has learned some valuable lessons about queues in the last two years. Nunzia has been to two of the three major D23 events that I have attended and I think both of us can say that they handled the lines poorly at best. There was a slight improvement at Destination D55, however at Destination D40 they had an entire room set aside with zig zaging queue indicators, plenty of room for people to sit on the floor while they wait and nice attendants who let people in and out for potty breaks, lunch runs and other such necessities. As I studied the map, I noticed that each of the presentation rooms has a dedicated queue room next to the presentation room. I would also imagine that the way that they "stack" the room will also help the CM's deduce when a presentation has reached capacity.

Each day will be different too because someone posted that their Friday tickets said 27,000 something, Saturday 35,000 something and Sunday read 40,000 something! :scared1:

This time it seems that they have indicated in the guide book that the Studios Presentation is the only one that they will have you surrender your electronics.

That is what it looked like to me too. Thanks. :)

Gettin' ready for three days at the park with DS16. Just arrived at CCI tonight. Ran over to DTD for dinner at the Rainforest Cafe at DS16's request. Off to bed now. Tomorrow is a Magic Morning for us so we are up early! :woohoo:

FWIW, probably not much, but anywho....

At the 2009 Expo the lines for the presentations were insane. If you went to the presentation that ended immediately before the next one and stayed for the entire thing, you had about a 10% chance of getting in tot he 2nd presentation. I got lucky a few times and got shut out a few times.

The "no recording devices" was very strictly enforced at the presentations that revealed proprietary information. If memory serves me right, the guidebook last time did not mention this at all, but you knew when you got to the queue for the presentations at which it was applied. I would not be surprised if there is more than just one session at which this is enforced. I remember giving up my cell phone twice.

Looking at the schedule for this year, it's tough to see everything on my "hit list." If anyone saw the link for the schedule I posted earlier, it helps, as does the iphone app, for piecing together a plan.

At the last Expo I thought we paid $5.00 for the guide book? :tink:
They were free. I have several of them.

...Which means I will not have to line up insanely early for the Arena. However Stages 23 and 28 are much smaller and may require lining up really early.

:wizard:

I would not underestimate the line-up dedication of other attendees. The lines for all three presentation rooms last time were just crazy - and that was without anyone having "guaranteed" seats with the pre-sale packages from this year. Those worry me --- big time. They are going to eat up valuable seats that last year were already tough enough to get. But, is what it is.

It was very tricky (and somewhat lucky) to be able to see back-to-back presentations. They do indeed clear the rooms.

I'm a veteran of many, many comic/pop-culture cons, but this "clearing the rooms" things is new to me. Throws off my entire strategy!

So if they clear the rooms, then the priority is to be in the LINE before your desired panel. Not in the room. Is that correct?

Why do they clear the rooms? Isn't it more work/crowd control for them?

Not really. They just assign a few people to make sure the room empties out of all people. They clear the rooms to be fair to those that were not in the previous session. If they didn't clear the room, 3/4 of the people would just "camp out" from one session to the next. Of course, the flip-side to that coin is that those who are cleared out, are at the back of the line for the next session.

I am starting to think more and more that I better be safe than sorry. I will head to the Expo early on Friday and see how it goes. I would hate to miss one of the presentations that I could have made. I have a good book and my LGMH.

Dreams will you have an LGMH? We have not had a good old-fashioned disagreement for awhile and I am missing it... :rolleyes1

Depending on your 1st presentation you want to attend being in line outside the Convention Center for three hours may not help much at all. It's where you go once you get in. Many people will be running for the Dream Store for limited merchandise, others will run for the Arena line up. Some will probably head for the DL Hotel presentation, but I don't think there is any one thing that is drawing people there Friday morning.

It would be smart to have your book. I would imagine that the queue for one presentation will start the moment that the previous one goes into the room (if people aren't already hovering outside the door to be first in the next one to queue up). I doubt that people will be queuing up two presentations prior, though. Hopefully the CMs will shoo people away until the previous session fills up.

How can Dick Van **** NOT be in the Arena? That's going to be a challenge to go to - especially since it's the only scheduled event then!

(odd - apparenlty the board thinks his name is a bad word)

I agree. I don't know why they don't move this to the Arena. I see only a small fraction of the people who want to watch this getting seats. There will be a lot of upset people turned away. This is my prediction. I would love to go. But will it be worth standing in line for hours to see? I guess I will make that decision Friday.

I'm figuring skip the Trivia tournament and get in line as soon as they clear the queue. I wonder how many others have that same thought?

Okay, all the questions about queues got me to dig out my D23 Expo 2009 pictures and a schedule. Here's what I have pulled together as an example for those who have not been before. (Disclaimer: These pictures are blurry and have NO artistic purpose at all. I took them to attempt to show a friend the new level of the "Art of Disney Queueing" as I called it.) I thought they were perfect for some of the questions arising here.

This was the group lined up for the 11:00am Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Presentation: Imagineering the Future of Disney Theme Parks in Arena.

10:42am, People in front of me are heading in. (Notice security checking bags. This was NOT a camera check-in presentation.)

11:01am and around we went! (Yes, through all those zigzags.)

11:19am Showtime!

Hope this helps visually for some of you.

On a completely different note, I saw some questions about autographs. At the ABC area, Cheryl Burke was there one afternoon. I was not really interested in getting an autograph, but I find her to be a very interesting person and stopped for a bit to watch her interact with people.

IMG_3220.jpg

I was told that they were wrapping up and if I were to join the line, I would not get an autograph. That was fine. I wasn't planning on one. However, when they finished, she had noticed me watching for a bit and asked, "Did you want something signed?" I told her I was just watching, but would love to speak with her if she had a moment. She and I talked for a few minutes and she offered to take a picture with me. Here is the one I took of her before the security dude took one of the two of us.

One of my random "magical moments" from D23 Expo 2009 that I remember still two years later.

Meeting and chatting with the man was another, especially considering that I am fascinated with his craft and own WAY too many of his pieces.

Even if I can't spell his name without cheating. Olszewski :)

Those are the main ones that I'm aiming for. You don't need to be in line outside the convention center to make the Arena line at 11AM. Just enter at a normal time and as Nunzia said, keep an eye on the queue. Enjoy the show floor and hop in line around 10 or so, you'll be fine.
