I'm starting to think it's GF. The cakes being ordered from them are priced really high. It's crazy to see prices of $100 or more. I posted several pages back about my experience and thoughts regarding the cake I was trying to order. I used another resource and ordered the cake that way. When I was discussing cost I explained what I was told by Pat and the person I ordered from couldn't figure out how the GF priced out the cake. I anticipated paying full price for the 2 cakes I wanted and a slight decorating fee since I was asking for particular colors but the quote from Pat was twice the cost of the cakes if ordered individually. I was told that all the bakeries were supposed to be standizing the cake prices but it doesn't seem like it.

I'll price it both ways, but I can't see spending $100+ for a "just because" cake.

I agree with you - we're leaving today and we've bought two cakes during the 2+ weeks we've been here (one at the beginning & one a week later). We got the Mickey Cake for $48 and an 8" for $32 - spending a total of $80. We saved each cake to eat through the week but never did. So for 4 people, we ate a total of 8 pieces - which means each piece cost us $10. Seems really extravagant -- especially when Disney is oblivious to the fact that there's a recession and is charging more and more for everything.

Having said that, I'm sure everyone's cakes will be delicious and well worth whatever you spend!

Does anyone ever get cakes for something other than b-days, anniversarys, etc? This Sept will not only be our first trip to WDW but it will also be our first family trip as well. I was thinking about surprising the kids with a cake to celebrate the occasion.

If this is something we can do, are there any pictures of cakes like this?

I have been following this thread for a while now. I have ordered a cake as a surprise for my DH for our upcoming June trip. We will have it delivered to Artist Point on Fathers day. We are celebrating not just Fathers Day, but also DH finishing his MBA (he graduates in July - his last class ends the week before we arrive at WDW). I haven't got a quote on the price yet. I have been emailing Chef Eddie at the WL and he is sending my order over to the Contemporary bakery to see what they can do for me. I am expecting to pay around 125.00-150.00 for the cake.

I asked for an 8inch layer cake - white cake with white chocolate mousse filling and white chocolate buttercream. I have also asked for some special decorations to reflect my DH graduating with his MBA. I have emailed the school logo as well as some photos of other graduation cakes I have seen and liked. So we will see how it goes.

I really don't think the prices that have been quoted to others are out of the ordinary and overly pricey. Sure Disney is always going to be more than our local grocery store - it always has been and always will be.

My youngest DD celebrated her 16th birthday on the 9th of this month. She is a HUGE fan of all of the cake shows on the food channel and knew exactly what type of cake she wanted. So we ordered it from a local bakery - not a grocery store bakery - couldn't have gotten this there. Here is a photo of the cake we ordered for her 16th.

The 8 inch cake was fully decorated in fondant with buttercream underneath the fondant. It was a red velvet cake with white chocolate ganache filling. The total cost - $126.00

So - considering Disney has always and will always charge more than what most of us are used to locally - I really don't see the prices I am seeing here that unusual.

Not trying to flame anyone - or upset anyone - just adding my 2cents and a bit of insight from someone whom has ordered a custom non grocery store bakery cake recently.

That cake is gorgeous!!!! I love it.

And although my cake experience has been limited to my mother making me cakes (because she makes amazing cakes - castles, beach scenes, top hats for my dad, who's a magician) and cheap grocery-store bought cakes, I know that I'm willing to pay 25$+ for a mini wedding-looking cake for two people. Because the amount of detail that they put on those little cakes is amazing, and so time consuming.

I've baked cakes myself, and I know that I have enough trouble with a 1 layer, chocolate on chocolate cake. (Making myself hungry... ). The amount of work that goes into some of these cakes is insane. And yes, some of the prices are insane too, but in the end, hopefully it's worth it. It seems that the Grand Floridian and the Yacht Club are almost always worth it, and that also seems to be where the most money needs to be spent.

It's all supply and demand. And I demand my little wedding cake - so I'll pay for them to make it just for me, as a surprise for my boyfriend, who saw this thread, and said "we should get a cake," even after I told him they were really expensive. He even said I could pick it out and he'd pay. Of course, since it's a surprise, I told him I'd just think about it, because I know he forgets things pretty easily - so hopefully he's forgotten that conversation.

Oh, I don't think they're all that out of line with real world prices if you're comparing Disney to bakery prices. We spent over $100 for a cake that wasn't even all that fancy for my grandmother's 90th birthday, because we wanted the same filling/cake/frosting combo we had for DD's Disney birthday. I'm just surprised at the recent jump, from getting a price of $75 back when I was putting together the budget for a May trip (in Feb, when Linda was the go-to person at the GF) to seeing others quoted $140 for less complex cakes now. Disney's cakes are delicious IME (I did prefer the GF over the Poly, tho) and worth every penny, but that kind of price hike over such a relatively short time is a little off-putting.

I wonder if it might be that the cost of food in general, but especially flour, has skyrocketed.... I know we bake our own bread, and that requires a lot of flour, just like cakes - just a thought that I didn't remember until now.

I can totally understand where you are coming from and why you feel that way. I am sure I would as well.

Guess it comes down to supply and demand? If they can get away with charging for it - they are going to do it until they get to the point of where people stop ordering.

But I do have to agree, the prices have seemed to increase at a rapid rate!!!! Although this hasn't put me off....I can't wait to order our cake!!! We are going to book dinner at 1900 park fare just so we can have a cake from the GF bakery!!

Well we are back and I have to say Pat and Christina (Pat had a family emergency) were wondeful! I cannot believe the cake they had the bakers produce for us. It was the most beautiul cake I have even seen. When we arrived at the GF Cafe I told them it was a surprise and they made sure to keep it that way. Even the waiter Geoff (best waiter ever) kept it a surprise and made sure my Mom had no idea we got a cake for her. When Geoff brought it out everyone stopped talking and just watched it go by. In fact my mom said "Oh Wow look at that" and then she was speechless when he sat it in front of her. He said everyone had heard about the cake and had been checking it out all day. They could not wait to see who got it. Geoff also said he was to cut the cake for us, but he could not do it. He said it was the most beautiful they had even seen come out of the GF bakery, so that made me feel good. After about 30 mins my mom cut it, but she felt so bad doing it. I will post a pic of it later, since I cannot do it now, but it really does not do it justice.

Chocolate Cake filled with red rasberry mouuse and fresh red rasberries icing was dark chocolate ganache and chocolate shavings. 4 white chocolate strawberries in front of the cake, a white chocolate slipper and red sugar roses sat on top of the cake.

I'm sorry if this question has been posted.....this whole cake ordering is confusing...We are going to WDW in August and as it so happens, my husband will FINALLY be graduating from colllege!!

I'd like to get him a very yummy, very "cool" cake as a surprise, which is more important than the cost of it. In addition to it being very yummy, I'd like Mickey standing on top with a cap on his head! There will just be 4 of us to eat it, so not too big (but if I have to order a bigger one, I will).

If I am understanding correctly, the GF has the best bakery? Today was my ADR day and we are only eating there once for breakfast....I don't want to have the cake at that time, plus we are going directly to a water park so will have no where to put the leftovers....

We are eating dinner at the following places (in order):
Chef Mickey's
Boma
Mama Melrose
Coral Reef
Mickey's backyard BBQ
Tony's Town Sq.


If I call the general cake #, am I going to get what I want or should I look into moving our ressies one night to a GF restaurant? If I order the cake from the general cake #, will they deliver the cake to any of the above restaurants, or do I need to order the cake from one of the bakeries from the restaurants above?? And if so, are one of the bakeries from above better than others???

I'm sorry - I don't even know if the above makes sense!! I am SO tired!!!

Where are you staying? You might want to call the Boardwalk Bakery (I forget if they still do custom cakes) or you could try to get a dinner at the Yacht Club, they make great cakes too!
