Official American Idol Season 4 Thread

I don't know if anyone noticed, but everyone that got booted, didn't get any airtime at all in Hollywood. If they did, it was nowhere near as much time as people like Carrie, Anwar, Constantine, Mikayla and Anthony. When all 4 of them made it to the top 24 I was like "who are they?" Most people find a liking to people during the auditions and in Hollywood, and they grow attached to them. I can honestly say I picked Anthony, Carrie and Mikayla as a few of my favorites because I've heard them all sing a few times before and I thought they were all good. And I knew that if they didn't do good performing this week, I would have voted for them anyway, because I know they have talent and I would want them to have another chance. As with the others who were voted off, I've never heard them before, so I don't even know if they'd do good in future performances against all the other contestants.

I know there are some people that vote based on that night's performance, but there are also a lot of people that vote for their favorites from early on. So even though a lot of people thought Melinda was just complaining, there was definitely truth to that, and I felt bad for her. She definitely didn't get any airtime and no one knew anything about her, so how could she have had an early fan base?

Am I the only one that's unimpressed with the males in this competition? I didn't get to see Monday's show (and never will be able to because of a class), but on the clips they showed, I wasn't impressed at all (to be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with the girls either). What's the big deal with this Anwar guy? To me, he completely made the awful song "Moon River" even worse.

Now I didn't think that Sarah should have been eliminated yet, and I understand that being booted can be devastating, but you go on the show knowing that you stand a chance of being eliminated. No matter what, this is your time to shine and I don't think that she should have done such a lackluster performance in the end. The other girls noticed that and tried to get her to loosen up a bit right at the end of her song, but she wouldn't budge. I know if I were in the record industry and she came to me for a deal, I don't know if I would give her one based on that performance. In my mind, I would have to assume that I would get similar performances out of her when she was having a bad day or whatever. In the music industry, you can't do that...

I agree. They know that they will have to sing afterwards. I didn't care for her anyway, but come on, don't be such a sore loser.

I did have a problem with how they told Judd. I think that was a bit too much and uncalled for. I did like Judd, I don't think he was top 12 material, but there were others who did worse.

I do have to agree about air time before they make it to this point. We didn't recognize some either. I think that they focused too much on some and not at all on others.

That's the LAST results show that I watch live! It's the one part of AI that I've always disliked - this year it seems especially cruel - not suspenseful!

I'll TiVo the rest of the Wednesday shows and just "get to the point"!

I keep telling you guys, Constantine doesn't look like Brendan Frasier, he looks like Dave Mustaine of Megadeth (well, minus the blonde hair) :teeth:

As for my thoughts on who got booted last night (and how)...In order of time fo death ;) :

Melinda: Simple fact of life: there just aren't many people out there that can sing a Celine Dion song and do it justice. Melinda certainly isn't one of those people. With another song, she may have been ok, but at this point, my thought is "no great loss". As to that whole "People already had their favorites" thing...Um, sorry, but no. You just didn't sing very well.

Jared: Actually thought Simon's comment from performance night said all that needed to be said. It was like an audition for a mediocre boy band...and an audition that he wouldn't have won. Probably the easiest choice to go among the guys.

Sarah: Kinda sorry to see her go, but not terribly surprised. There was just something...well...odd, about the way she sang that song. She definitely would have been better off with a different song selection. Still, the great ones make bad songs better, and I certainly didn't see any sign of that.

Judd: Ok, this one just flat out stunk ! The way they told him was cruel, and there were at least two or three guys that deserved the boot more than he did. It's funny that the judges were going after people for picking "safe" songs, but here stands a shining example of why they were right to do so...because sometimes, America is too stupid to know better. And they way they told him...I'm sorry, but the poster that said earlier that this was a "tough business" and that this wasn't anything unusual, that's just plain wrong. Record producers, in ordinary circumstances, don't tell you they're going to sign you, then pull the rug out from under you at the last minute, essentially laughing in your face as your dreams come crashing down. That's the equivalent of what they did to Judd, and it was sickening to watch.

If this show turns into another teeny-bopper popularity contest the way it did last year, letting through three or four people that couldn't find a job at a local karaoke joint, let alone in the record industry, then I'm probably about done with it.

I agree - my DH and I thought the guys were terrible!!! We really enjoyed the girls

and that was the worst rendition of Moon River I have ever heard!! It is my mom & dad's song and it is so beautiful and he just butchered it!!!

I tend to agree with this...... take for instance the big bald guy (sorry forgot his name right now) If I was to vote, it would be for him strictly because he pulled on my heart strings during his audition.... he wasn't the best by far but I feel sorry for the guy. I know there are alot of people who latch on to someone and continue to vote just because they like them

I think you're talking about Scott. I like him, but I have no plans to vote for him. His story pulled at my heart strings too, but I wouldn't vote for him based on that. I do know that some people will vote for him though totally based on his initial audition. But in my opinion, he's already proven his father wrong! Look...he's in the top 24 of American Idol! I'd say that's pretty good! :)

IF I was going to vote for him, it would be based on his performances and his singing ability. If he can affect me emotionally with his performances/singing, that's when I vote...:)

Well, I didn't like the way they did the eliminations and it sounds like most agree about the how even if not the why or who. I read a scathing review about last night's show and it wasn't about the why or who but rather all about Ryan Seacrest. The writer went on and on about how Ryan is the one who ends up the biggest *** (butt) as he seems cold and unfeeling. Either he is too stupid to realize how he comes across or so enjoying his fame that he doesn't care (according to the article). It was harsh but I somewhat agree that Ryan, while an attractive guy, is a cold fish.

I agree. I think the way they have gone about the show so far has given some individuals an unfair advantage regardless of their talent. As many have said there were several indiivudals never shown singing during the Hollywood part so this week was the first time that we actually saw them sing to the point we would keep up with them. I thought during the show where they found out if they were in the top 24 that they should have shown each that made it instead of showcasing some of the ones crying that had to go home. For example, Nikko Smith has not been shown singing to my memory except in the St. Louis audition and then Monday night. Therefore except for local people he didn't have the chance for a fan base to grow yet. Others such as Constantine have had a lot more air time. I agree you may vote for someone who has a bad night because of what you have seen in the past and for some there was little past singing to compare to.

I also think a new voting system should be in place. From reading various boards, I find it crazy that people would vote hundreds of times for a person. It is not suppose to be a popularity contest but who is overall a good performer. People vote hundreds of times if they think their favorite might go home. Others who feel their person did a great job only vote once or twice think many others vote and they are save. As long as they keep it this way good talent will go home before bad talent.

OK guys - so now it's time for your predictions for next week's cuts -

Granted, we haven't heard them perform, so we're just going on our hunches:

I say Scott and Travis - Scott because, well, he's Scott and he isn't a looker (not that it should matter, but it's just a hunch) and Travis because he just doesn't seem to be keeping up with the rest.

I also say Janay (because I thought she deserved to go this week) and Mikayla (because I'm hoping she goes because she grates on my last undamaged multiple sclerosisized nerve). ;)
Well, I am basing this solely on this week's performances. They may do better next week and I may change my mind. I won't be able to see the guys sing next week b/c of a class so I will just have to go by this thread. Anyway, my guess for which guys go would be Joseph and either Travis or David. My choice for girls is obvious--MIKALAH (God, please, have mercy on us all!) and Janay. My choice may change for the others but not for Mikalah!

Reading this .... I am amazed.

You want this to be a kind/gentle show and nicely tell them they are off. They have NEVER done that and won't start. Drama sells and makes ratings and this show has ratings.

Melinda was whinny. I couldn't tell one from the other on this show had no preconcieved notions, but if you act that way.... you would have been gone sooner or later. (That nobody loves me attitude would have come out!)

They have always had to sign after getting the boot so that is not different. hey if they just came on and booted they would need 10 minutes. No ad money there.

I have friends in the industry and if you need to be coddled you shouldn't go into music as a profession.

Actually no they didn't--the semi-finals was the top two picks and maybe they started to have them sing last season..but the loser didn't have to sing until the final 10 or 12.

Just an update on the poll at idolonfox:

Judd is now leading with 46% of the votes. Sarah is at 34%.

That's with just over 180,000 votes.

Too bad they won't pull a twist, ala the Outcast Survivor, and bring one back. I read the thing about Billy Joel on Judd's bio and have liked him ever since.

they might. in previous years, wasn't there always a wild card - the judges would each pick someone to come back. i believe clay aiken was a wild card 2 seasons ago! so you never know...

I don't think we are saying we we want this to be a nice show and gentle with how they get booted. In years past, there has always been suspense waiting to find out who it is going to be. He would have the bottom 3 stand on the stage. He would go over the songs they sang, and what the judges said about their performances. Then, go to a break. They would come back, he would dismiss one of them back to the group, and it would leave 2 standing...go to to a break. He would talk with them dragging it out, and he would finally tell them who lost. Or he would tell them who was safe for another week. He never bluntly said "you're out". "It's you, you're gone" Or whatever. So yes, suspense is good, alot of time, I would get a laugh out of how he could leave them hanging with anticipation. But last night was just cruel, and it wasn't just with Judd. He was as abrupt with the other contestants also. It is bad enough that these kids don't get to move on.

I know alot of it is the producer's of the show looking for ratings, but I do have to wonder if Ryan is getting bored with it. He just doesn't seem so enthuistic anymore. Maybe having his own show has him thinking he is above all this AI stuff now? I mean, really, with his show, he hob-nobs with TRUE celebrities.

Well, those "booted" contestants got a LOT of publicity last night.... If they are as good as they think they are it should help.

Sorry, I just don't think the "your out" was any meaner then last year. Either way the kid is gone..... Could "your out" be the next catch phrase? Like "your fired" , I bet that is there hope and considering the amout of posting here... they may be right. Publicity is publicity....

Now Eric.. don't make me go after you!! You remember what happened when we played Survivor together, now don't you?? :smooth:

Well---that was I think the first time they had 12 if I'm not mistaken. 10 slots were the regulars and the last 2 filled up the wild card. They already have the 12 (or will have in 2 weeks)--and this season is already longer than in past seasons. 12 is about all they can fit in an hour.
