Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

Basically, you buy the new bib from a TA and they will send you a form to fill out to get a refund on your original race purchase, as long as it came from RunDisney.
@Keels Any chance you could PM me the agent.. ? My wife Really wants to do these races and I missed getting her registered once again.. :)

Thank you so very much!

Thanks pangyal! Interesting reading there! :dogdance:

I only have Pro Compression sleeves/socks, but even within the same size, some of mine are tighter around the knee area than others. Some I can comfortably wear to bed all night and some I can only wear for a couple of hours before they start bugging me.

Ok, so it makes me feel better that it's not just me! :yay:

I have 4 different brands... The 180's are ok for not digging in but don't help with my shin splints. I wear these to sleep in after long runs. The Skins are tight. Don't care for them. The Injinji are good for running as long as I'm not on lots of concrete because they don't do well for shin splints, but I like to run in toe socks and these are my only pink or girly color ones I have. They are a little tight around the knee.
And finally I have 2 pairs of zensah which are my favorite and the only brand I will buy from now on. I love them for running and recovery alike although they sometimes get itchy when I sleep in them overnight after a long run. They do not bother me during runs.

Do you find that the zensahs get tight around your knees or ankles? I don't think that my calves are extra large but I've even tried the compression socks at Walmart made for diabetics, probably not highest quality but even these dug into me leg just under my knees. Maybe I'm just not meant to use them but I just wanted some experienced princess sisters' opinions. :-)

Does anyone know if the food court at AoA will be open or should I plan on bring a toaster? I love having peanut butter toast!
Based on marathon weekend POP and All-stars opened at 3:00am, so I would assume AOA would open early as well so you can use the toaster.

Procompression just had a coupon code on FB for buying two pairs and getting three free. It was only one style of socks though. I took advantage and got five pairs for $100.

From my doctor-friend S:
"I wouldn't freak - it's probably just more tightness than anything. Focus on stretching for several days, with cross-training as opposed to running/jogging. I wouldn't have her run again until she can walk without pain, and then try light jogging. Definitely shouldn't be down more than a week total. Sounds like it's new and when she hurt, she altered her run pattern and that caused her calf to hurt."

And go for a foam roller over The Stick to start with - it hurts like a MAJOR B, but it feels so good after!

Thanks Keels! I haven't run since it started on Tuesday. I did get a foam roller last night and used that. It didn't hurt like I was expecting (or much at all) so then I was worried that I did it wrong and/or it was something other then my IT band but when I stood up I could walk again!!! Feels good so far this morning. I think it's from carrying my 2 year old on my left hip verses running. After carrying her around Target for about 30 minutes I could barely walk. So no more carrying kids, no running for a few more days, and foam rolling! I think I should be set! Thank you again!!! Oh yeah, and more stretches!

Ouch.

Arnica, epsom salts baths, and "the stick" or something similar.

Thank you! I tried a foam roller last night and it seemed to help! Crossing fingers!!!

I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this, but also so relieved you posted about it because I'm experiencing something so similar since my 10k race last Saturday, except my pain is more on the outside of my knee than my hip. I don't remember any twinge or anything during the race that caused it, but I could hardly walk on Monday. I ran Tuesday morning and it seemed okay but I figured it's better to let it rest, so I'm probably going to skip my runs for this weekend. I'm hoping I will feel perfectly normal by Tuesday to pick up my runs again there. I have it KT taped right now and I've been foam rolling, but I also want to thank whoever posted the IT band exercises because I will definitely be doing them when I get home today!

I'm glad it was helpful! Hope you are feeling better next week and back on track! Foam rolling helped me last night! @Keels posted the stretches! I trying them next!

I finally put my Shuffle playlist onto my iphone, and then I used Zombies Run for the first real time today. :) (tried it once before, but it's super-boring with no music) It was fun.

When you run to all the beats (kind of double-time) to Rolling in the Deep, you go really fast and crack up at the end of the (short, indoors) lap. I was playing around with cadences and ways of running. (no doubt I've destroyed my legs now, whoopsie) I think it drastically underestimated my distance, and I somehow turned OFF endomondo 1 mile in, so I don't know how long I went.

And I just realized I forgot to turn on Charity Miles. Drat! No miles to post for Ravenclaw on Hogwarts Running Club LOL. (are any of you guys on HRC as well? I see people from the Princess page posting on HRC or vice versa; are any of them you guys?)

I am! Ravenclaw, though I have been resorted into Hufflepuff. I can't ever remember to turn that thing on either!

For Dopey weekend, I did for the 5k and 10k and then realized that Charity Miles' terrible app was what was draining my phone battery because of the terrible tracking they do. So, no more. Sorry, Gryffindor.

I've heard that if you set it to indoor run, it uses less battery. I haven't tested it yet though.

You definitely should get one. I didn't end up going with a road id but gone for a run's version of the shoe id (which I liked better than the road id version for shoes) and I love it because I can't forget it.

Just a thought about the shoe ID. I have read that it is better for you to have the wristband, because you can lose your shoe in an emergency.

I actually love the dance party. It is one (the only) place where you don't mind looking a little silly. Definitely a good warm up and so many people are doing it that is just fun. We were saying that not many people do it at the Disneyland races. I guess because people can show up at the last minute. In Orlando, what else are you going to do at that hour. They also have Princesses out for pictures.

Just a reminder for newbies that you can get your medal engraved at the finish ($20), there is usually small coffee cart in the family reunion area pre-race, a merchandise tent and post-race massages, so don't forget to bring a little cash or your credit card.

I rarely care if I look silly...especially at Disney! I forgot about the princesses! I'm not doing parks so this might be my only character photos!

They have RoadID that goes over your fitbit? I'm getting one. I was reluctant to have yet another thing around my wrist (speaking of, do people run the races with their MagicBands? Do you check them?) but I always run with the fitbit so I'll never forget the id!

I do. I don't want to lose it, and I get used to having it on.

For Princess last year I got m medal engraved at Arribas in MK for $6. This year for the WDW Half I wore my medal to Disney Springs on Sunday and the guy in Arribas engraved it for free! Might be a better deal to go to those locations than at the race. For reference though, when I got back from Wine & Dine this year I took my medal to Things Remembered to be engraved and it cost $36

Have any of you done the Breakfast or the Pasta in the Park? Are they worth it if I'm going solo?

Haven't done either...think there maybe some character photos chances. The Pasta party is too late for me and not really into a full breakfast buffet..at least not that early. Hopefully others that have been will be by to give you a different perspective.
This will be my second time solo. I did the first four with one or both daughters and the 5th my DH came. The six I was on my one...first year they ran the 10k so I did all three races and last year with my son and this year solo again.

Anyone hanging out and wants company for a meal I'd be happy to go along. It will be short trip for me..in Friday night and out Sunday.

Today's race was rough (actually, ruff! since it had dogs). I knew part of the trail was paved and assumed all of it was. Nope! It was mud and it had been driven over with bikes and carts and cars so the mud had uneven tracks through at least a mile. Oh, and hills! My shins were hurting a lot before I even got to the first water stop. And of course it started out cold but then I had to take off my jacket and stupid me had pinned my bib to my jacket so I had to take that off and switch it to my shirt. Then I couldn't find my tissues in the pocket of my jacket and my nose was running. I'm glad I did it though because my whole purpose was to get in the frame of mind of racing and running in a spot different than my norm. The park was very nice but it is across from the ghetto and the area with a lot of shootings so I don't think I would go there alone!

That sound like one of the 10K's I did back in October (except the ghetto part). It was on a trail in a park, and I thought it'd be flat for the most part. Boy, was I wrong! The first .5 mile and last .5 mile were flat, the rest was hills or was a mix of gravel/oyster shells or mud. I was just getting over a wicked cold and had to stop twice to blow my nose. I was only a few minutes slower than my goal, but still, it was frustrating.

One thing I learned about running through mud is you have to take more lateral strides, kind of like an ice skater. It sounds weird, but it helps when you're slogging through the muck.

@Keels, is it just half and glass slipper challenges that are available? I'm assuming no 5k bibs since they can't defer those....

I don't think we will do it, but my 5 year old saw the medals yesterday and now wants the 5k with Ariel.... I "might" consider running it so I can get the metal for her if bibs are available. (But if you say no, I will definitely enjoy sleeping in on Friday and just going to the kids races!)

Yeah - I haven't seen anyone with 5k bibs available for a while, pretty much since medals came out! But you can always try calling TAs! I got my Jingle Jungle 5K bib at the VERY LAST MINUTE from Jim Stone at Acclaim Travel, so there's always a chance!

@Keels Would you mind PMing me the TA information? My friend has a bib for the Half but would love to upgrade to the GSC. Thanks!

I've been told that Acclaim Travel is out of bibs for GSC now (sold the last four). You can always try contacting another TA listed on the RunDisney site. Acclaim is the only one I get emails from.

That happened to me! I was definitely not prepared!

I just want to thank everyone who chimed in on the "what do you eat during the race" conversation. I found some SportsBeans at the big sporting goods store, as well as ONE lonely bag of Honey Stinger chews. I don't know where the rest were, I scoured that place, they had boxes of the waffles, but just the one bag of chews-that I nabbed. On the long run today I fueled twice- around 50 minutes and around 1 hour 50. Once with 3 SportsBeans (rookie mistake, way too many! I felt like I was chewing a golf ball! Fortunately I tried them at a water stop and life moved on) and then with 1 chew. The chews were so much easier to eat, but I liked the beans, I had a couple 30 minutes before I ran- seems like something easy to pop while I'm standing in a corral- as long as I have water.

And post run I feel so much better than I normally do! Almost every run of greater than 10 miles , while I feel fine running, I have felt queasy and out of it for an hour after; but today I feel great. Which is good, because our plans for Sunday have us at EPOCT- and nothing should stand between me, my Canadian cronut, and the feast at Garden Grill.

(Although I just saw that SOARIN is going to be closed until summer and that is a bummer- I love that thing.)
