Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

How's the weekend training going for everyone? I did 5.5 miles yesterday and 10 miles today. My first outside runs since Jan 1.
I ran my longest treadmill run ever yesterday: 13.1 miles! It was snowing buckets outside when I woke up, so I knew outside running was not an option. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I set the speed to little bit lower than I normally do for treadmill runs and I stopped to stretch a few times. It also helped to have a fun college basketball game the whole time along with my playlist blasting :)

4 miles for me... But I had to walk the last one :/ My legs are still bothering me and I know I need to take time off but it's so close! My calves are so tight and my hamstrings are sore but nothing I do seems to help them.

Do any of you live in higher elevation areas and notice a difference when you run in Orlando? I live at 5,000 feet and I guess I'm hoping someone will tell me it's easier to run at the lower elevation at DW. I'm starting to get worried about possible warm and humid conditions as I'm used to running in the cold now, so any advantage to offset that I would enjoy lol :) @bevcgg you live in the mountain west, correct? Have you run before at DW?

My weekend training was a 5k yesterday. I managed to do a 14:12 pace. My last race was in November and my pace was 14:39. I'm sure my pace would be faster if I hadn't dealt with hills, mud and a dogs. I didn't get my chocolate milk yesterday or get to spend time stretching and today I'm dealing with muscle spasms in my calves. Not pleasant when you are trying to drive!

10 miles today and 2 yesterday. Starting to add in a back to back now for April challenge.
Yesterday was colder than forecast, and I was dreading getting out there today for a long run. But it was warmer than expected, beautiful 50 degree sunny day, such a nice change. I really enjoyed it. Certain parts of the bike path I use still had some snow/ice but the majority of it was clear.

I also just did 3 miles today. Had planned on 4 but my new shoes weren't laced tight enough. Had to stop and adjust them due to ankle pain. Not taking chances on injury so I went with 3. (They're he same make and model as my current shoes but want to break in a new pair before Princess weekend. I remember this happening with the current ones too making me think my shoes were a little big.)

P.S. I'm not sure when I became the person who refers to 3 miles as "just". I seriously can't believe how far I have come!

I had this exact conversation with DH yesterday! "It's only a 5 mile run today. Wait, did I just say JUST 5 MILES??" :) I have come so far in less than a year! I am so proud of myself lol!

I did 5 miles yesterday and it was brutal! My average was fine, still at 13:25, but there is no way I could have gone another mile! I even took my fuel with me and had some at mile 3. I'm hoping it was just due to the unseasonably hot weather, 67 with 50% humidity. But I think it will be just as warm and more humid at Princess so I'm starting to worry... At least Princess won't have direct overhead sun for most of it,(I was running at noon yesterday).

This is probably a dumb question but, my son and I are signed up for the princess 10K. It is our first race so we have no idea what to expect. I have not received any emails since last summer when we signed up. Should we be worried? Also, any advice for us first time racers is greatly appreciated! TIA!

I'm on a 10 day training cycle right now due to my injuries, which means long runs every 10 days. So today was only 4, next long run is Tuesday. But I was very happy with today's run. I felt strong and pain free and got a personal best on a Strava segment I use to track my progress. I didn't set out to do a fast run, sort of just happened, so that reassured me I'm bouncing back from my injury:).

Great job on all the training runs everyone!

Hey my son and I are signed up for out first 1ok as well. I did the now retired Everest 5k last May alone and had a blast! Just run, enjoy, and have fun out there on the course with each other. Not sure what advice you're looking for other than that. I'm sure you've both trained well enough. Hope you had fun with the whole costume thing as well. My DS (age 22 keep in mind) was the one asking to do such a thing. Soooo, I'm Cindermom and he is Charming Son. LOL! :)

Lol, I love your costumes! We ran 3 miles yesterday in 30 minutes with a lot of hills, so I hope we are ready! Have you received any emails since signing up? I just didn't know if we were missing anything. I heard you should not wear headphones, do they play music along the course? Also, what time do you need to get on the buses the morning of the race?

No, I haven't received any emails either, and I don't remember receiving any for the 5k either last year. Perhaps just to let me know the event guide, and eventually waivers link(s) were up on the rD website. I have just been following here on the boards. My DBF, DS, and I are planning on arriving on Thursday the 18th @ 8:30 am per airlines, get checked in as far as we can, and heading straight to Expo to do pick up (it opens @ 10) as we have ADR in MK @ 12:50. But you asked about buses. I am super amped on ANY race day and plan to be on one of the first host buses to EPCOT (both mornings). Guess I didn't mention I'm doing 5k with DBF on Friday morning. His first EVER race of any kind and he's 58. Plan on walking a lot with him, but hey, he's not sitting on the couch! Of course, then as I confirmed with you, doing 10k on Sat morning with DS. Again, wishing to be on one of first host buses. The buses start for the 10k start running 3:30am, and they say to be on the transportation no later that 4:00am. I'm wearing headphones and did so last year. Even you just plug in one ear, I know they just don't want you to miss any instructions or warnings while on the course.

If I may be so forward, where are you staying. For us its Caribbean Beach which worked out well for the Everest run last year.

Thank you for all of the advice! We are staying at AKL Kidani. We also fly in on February 18th and plan to check in at the Expo that day.

Better safe than sorry! You're doing great. That one mile won't be a big deal.

I know what you mean! I've been saying I'm "just" doing the 5K. I remember when that seemed really far! Now I've come full circle. It seems pretty far again.

I ran my longest treadmill run ever yesterday: 13.1 miles! It was snowing buckets outside when I woke up, so I knew outside running was not an option. Bless your heart! I can't imagine running that far on the treadmill! I think 4-6 was my longest treadmill run and it took forever!

Yes- I have run at both DW and DL and I do find I run faster and it is a bit easier. The humidity in FL is a bit of a change- but it is still an "easier" run. DL is even better because it is drier and at sea level. You have more oxygen in your blood from living at higher altitude- thus giving you a slight edge. That is why the Olympic training center is in Co Springs. It is much harder for people to come to altitude for races-Runner's World mentions that people coming to altitude will be slower "Depending on the elevation, your workouts will likely be three to 15 percent slower than usual."
The hard part going east is the time change!!! LOL!!!
But make sure you stay hydrated- that helps with the change in the humidity levels.

Ok thanks that's good to hear from someone with experience! And yes, I am sooooo dreading that crazy early wake up call. I promised myself I would "sleep train" myself and start going to bed early and waking up like at 5:00 after the holidays to get somewhat used to it all. Have I done that even once? No I have not. I am not a morning person lol

I'm not a morning person either, and have never done anything to prepare for runDisney early mornings. I'm usually excited enough about the race to get going without too much difficulty. (Getting teen son who wanted to register for these things out the door with me is another story.) At least WDW/DL conditions are better than the local 5K races we run 20 degree temps!
