Official 2015 Disneyland Half Marathon Thread.

Anybody know of a good knee brace for running? I got one at road runner sports but it's really uncomfortable. It rubs the back of my knee a lot and is really uncomfortable

I injured my knee running 10 miles a couple weeks ago and have only done a couple short 2-3 miles since then- mostly walking. I went to the doctor Wednesday and he said I can run the race. It will hurt but I shouldn't make it worse. He's thinking inflamed bursa sac. I'm already a slow 48 year old 13 min/ mi walk/runner. Usually 1/1 This is my first half and I really want to finish - even if it's walking

Congrats everyone on your last long runs! I'm off for mine this morning - will be aiming for 18km, which is just over 11 miles. Back to the cold Melbourne weather for me today, so hoping I can finish strong.

Well, I certainly did not finish strong :sad2:

Struggled big time the last few miles, started getting tummy cramps and digestive 'issues' IYKWIM. Walked a bit longer than I had to crossing roads etc - it felt ok when I walked, but as soon as I started running again, not good! I made it back to the car, did a few stretches and drank my chocolate milk, drove home, ran straight past poor DH to the bathroom lol! Nearly passed out while I was in the shower. I had to get out and sit on the floor for a few minutes. When I was feeling well enough to get up again I got dried off and into some comfy clothes, and grabbed a few plain rice crackers to nibble on and a glass of water. The crackers went down really well, but I'm struggling to drink the water.

Does anyone have any ideas about how I could stop that happening again? Certainly don't want it to happen on race day! But just in case, are there portapotties throughout the course (from what I read, it sounded like they were just at the start, then the bathrooms in the parks would be open, but nothing after we leave the parks)? FWIW I had pretty equal amounts of water and powerade on the run, and 2 cliff shot block 'shots'. It was after the second one I started feeling a bit yuck in the tum-tum - haven't had any problem with them before (been using them and Gu Chews for my whole training program).

The event guide says there are portaloos at water stops too, which matches what I remember from Avengers (I clearly remember the set after Angel Stadium for example).

I think you're doing well to only have one long run interrupted by tummy troubles. The only thing I can think of is did you eat anything particularly heavy/greasy in the 24hrs before the run? Whatever you ate, avoid it before race day (me, a superstitious runner? Never!)

Good luck.

Thanks. You're right, I've been lucky to get this far with no issues. I just kinda wish it had happened earlier so I could have another chance at a long run before the event! I'm on a pretty healthy eating regime at the moment, but we did go to a friend's place for dinner last night. She cooked healthy food as well, but there could have been something in there that I don't usually eat. We'll have to be really careful in the lead up to the event since we're not used to American food - we'll have a kitchen, so can buy basic fresh produce and make most of our own meals if we have to.

I had inflamed bursa sacs in my knees (I'm a photographer and crawled on my knees too much too often over a week so now where knee pads for that), but for running I didn't wear a knee brace or anything, I didn't want any pressure put on it at all, a knee brace might make it worse. I did slather on tiger balm and it helped ease the pain. It seemed they were a lot better 2 wks after really messing them up, but that was by making sure I never sat on my knees or anything.

Anybody know if there's a grocery store within walking distance of Disneyland hotel? I would like to pick up water, peanut butter, banana and orange juice for quick breakfast in the room.

Thanks

Zanzibar, sometimes "healthy" can cause digestive issues too. Watch the fibre intake for 24 hours before running, and if it happens again, lay off the chocolate milk, that doesn't help an upset tummy at all.

SueInBoston, Google maps says there is a Target ~30minute walk south of Disneyland. But, even closer than that, at the corner of Harbor Blvd and Katella, there's a CVS, a ABC store and a 7-11

We took the ART (Anaheim Resort bus service) to the Target almacdonald mentioned a couple of years ago. The trip there was easy. There was some goof, though, and the bus didn't stop for the return trip for quite some time. That was a pain. If the ART had kept to the published schedule, it would have been easy-as-cake but that was not the case. Keep that in mind - hopefully the ART has gotten better over the last two years!

Thank you, I think between CVS, ABC and 7-11, I should be able to get my essentials!

Well, I got in a slow 6 mile walk yesterday. Wasn't too bad, but I started feeling a little worse later in the afternoon and a bit worse today. It looks like I will miss my 14 miler. :( Just gonna rest today, take lots of naps, Zicam, Mucinex and hope I can get rid of this crud quickly.

Great job on all the long runs everyone!

I feel like I've been MIA most of the summer. Life just got in the way: kids, work, extended family.... On an up note, my training has been consistent. Finished 11 miles strong yesterday and better yet, my legs feel great today. Congrats to everyone on their last long runs. Everyone's costumes are looking great, too. I purchased a Mickey and Minnie skirt from Etsy some time ago. I just need to finish up my top which will consist of 2 Mickey and Minnie head iron ons. Just not set on the placement yet. Because of my crazy summer I wasn't really psyched for the trip out west. This week I got kid #2 settled back at school and now I feel the excitement starting to take hold!! But what is up with the heat in Anaheim????? That has got to go before we head out there!!

There are no full grocery stores within walking distance, but between all the convenience stores on Harbor, you should be able to find those things :thumbsup2

Yeah I didn't really realise how bad it was when I had my chocolate milk - just following my routine lol!

I did realise overnight that I had porridge for breakfast before my run, which I don't normally do. I think because I went running on Sunday instead of Saturday it mucked up my routine and I just got up and had breakfast without thinking. Between the dairy and the fibre, I can see how that could have been the culprit!

At this point I think the best thing you can do is make sure you get better as quickly as possible! You'll be fine if you've only missed one short run in your whole training program :thumbsup2 A lot of people finished their build last week anyway and have started their taper.

I FINALLY bought the 10th Anniversary Party tickets! So I'll be at the Tiki Room meet up, @SgtTibbs :teeth: (By the way, thank you for coordinating it!)

Yay for anniversary party tickets!

Another guest for the Tiki Room meet up! Most enchanting. I look forward to meeting all of you. In case anyone missed it (the announcement along with other helpful tips are on the fist post of this now rather long thread....) we are having a pre-race meet-up in the waiting area for the Enchanted Tiki Room on Thursday at 4:30pm. Everyone is welcome to join us.

This is NOT a risk I am willing to take, no one wants to be around me before I've had coffee. Maybe i'll grab something on the way back to the hotel the night before, stick it in the fridge and have an "iced" coffee before the race.

Yes, Starbucks is open in Downtown Disney before the race. My friend wanted a cup of coffee before the Tinker Bell race... Of course I did the same. Big Mistake! Imagine being in the corral with thousands of runners in costume and all I had in mind is where is the portable potty on the course.

I struggle with knee pain a lot. I've tried a bunch of different knee braces, but while most are fine just walking around or sitting they all seem to slide down or bother me when I run. What works for me are CW-X tights. I find they give me enough support on some of my long runs to help mitigate a lot of the pain.

I've also had good luck with kinesio tape, but only when I get taped by someone else. When I tape myself it never seems to work as well.

I woke up in a panic this morning. I had that dream where I missed the 1/2 Marathon so this morning I had to verify all my reservations. :)

Flight - Check
Car - Check
Hotel - Check
DDD Race Registration - Check
Waver - Check
Anniversary Party - Check
Park Tickets - Check
Dinning Reservations - Check

*whew*
Guess I can start working on my packing list now.

Packing List...woohooo! Now if rD would give us a sneak peek at merch, I could make my shopping list!!

@Anne34

Knee discomfort? Been there, done that, bought the DVD! Sorry for your discomfort, hopefully a brace or tape can make it better.

I bought a knee brace from Ion (not sure if that was the official name) that has the ice pack insert. Works nice but bulky.
I have a brace from WalGreens that has worked great, minimal slippage, used it for three years now and cost about $12. I will be wearing it during the 10k and DL half.

Rock Tape, K-Tape, and other sport wraps and tapes usually are great for getting you through race day. Not sure about the DL expo, but typically the tape vendors are at the large race expos and will tape a problem area for you.

I am also interested in the compression tights/shorts that would cover the knees but haven't bought any yet.
