Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

So, as of this afternoon, I am officially a marathoner!

The issue I've been having with my knee/hip came back with a vengeance today and I wasn't able to run the last 5 miles or so. I couldn't even maintain a 16 minute mile walking pace. I might have just spent the last 2 miles just crying because I wanted to just be done lol. But I did it! I am worried that based on how my leg feels now that I am actually injured and not just sore. I will have to go to the doctor this week. I am a little nervous now for disney but I would certainly take it much, much easier there than I did today.

Congrats! I hope you are injury-free and can still be ready for Disney. The WDW Marathon is definitely a race where you want to take it slow and enjoy the scenery, so that shouldn't be a problem!

I have Runner's Knee issues, although that can mean many things. Building up your butt muscles and hamstrings & quads help as well as stretching & rolling them out. Google Runner's knee strengthening and stretching for some exercises. Taking a couple days off will help with immediate pain but personally the strengthening/stretching is what has helped me without taking any time off. Most likely it's not the knee that's injured but weak muscles and overused muscles around it that cause the pain in the knee.

Thanks for the tips and I'll look into the additional stretching and exercises. I do stretch before and after every run I do and also used a foam roller after my long run on Saturday. I think I may have just overdone it a little as my last big back to back runs (8 and 20) were just two weeks ago and I run a lot of hills during the week around my work. I think I'll try a mix of taking some short time off and working on some better strength training and stretching.

I guess this is part of training for the longer races for most people. I've been doing good with my training and this weekend I ran 10 miles on Friday followed by 23 on Saturday as part of my goofy training. I finished all of it without walking and did a better time than I expected which is good. The bad is that my right knee is now hurting and I have trouble going up and down stairs. Based on all my reading it sounds like I may have "runner's knee" and may need to take some time off from training. I don't really like the idea of that but I also want to make sure I don't get a more serious injury and can complete the goofy challenge in January. Has anyone else had this knee pain, a pain basically under the kneecap it seems, from running and have good advice on how to recover and miss minimal training?

I'm suffering from this right now myself!

I've been training for the full in January and was making steady progress but I veered off my schedule slightly and think I simply overdid it. I didn't want to take any time off either so I kept pushing through but it was more of a "two steps forward, one step back" kind of thing and I was nervous that I was risking further injury.

A cardio class that I take a couple of times a week at the Park & Recs was shutting down for the week for Thanksgiving so I decided to shut down all other physical activity at the same time to see if I could recover and it seems to be doing the trick. It's killing me to not be able to be my usual active self but I know it is better in the long run and I'm feeling the results.

Listen to your body and take the time off if you need it. There wasn't much I could find about recovering from this type of injury except R.I.C.E. so I've been off my feet with an ice pack and a knee brace for almost a week. You might not need quite as long but I wanted to make sure it's all good before getting back into it for these final few weeks. Good luck!

Matt

Way to go marathoner! Take your time resting and ease back into the training after the doc visit.

Congrats on finishing your marathon! I hope the doctor has some good news for you.

I had Runner's Knee about 5 years ago. Went to the doctor and she told me my flat feet were the cause of it. I had proper shoes (Brooks Adrenalines) but she wanted me to try Powersteps orthodics in my shoes (~$30 for a pair). They totally did the trick.

I agree with the PP that building up your butt muscles will help. Also, try to strengthen your core and pelvis. If you are stable through your core, your hips don't go side-to-side as much and your knees are happier. Doing some planks is good for this (per a PT I saw a month back).

But yeah, you may have to skip a few runs. Skipping a few won't derail your training, but having a full-blown injury will. :confused3 Hope you feel better soon!
Anyone have experience doing goofy without much in terms of back to back training runs?

I had a couple in my training schedule, but have missed/shortened several due to injury. I did 16 yesterday and am supposed to do 8 today, but my foot is hurting in an injury way and I'm nervous about aggravating it. I do run back to back days during the week at short distances, so I have that experience. Am I screwed if I don't get the back to backs in?
No, I don't think so.

I think you're doing the right thing in taking rest days when you need them. When I was training for Goofy in 2012 I did maybe 5 or 6 back-to-back runs and that worked for me. I actually remember running my training schedule by Coach Charles (cewait who is Perfectly Goofy) via PM and he indicated that I didn't even need to do that many.

I think if you're marathon-ready, you're Goofy-ready. :) Hope you feel better soon.

Congratulations!! Take some time and rest and recover, you have time to heal before the Disney weekend and you can definitely take it easier in a Disney race. That's my plan! :)

Well I'm not experienced with Goofy as this will be our first, but we are only doing 3 back to backs. Did one already and two more to go. My original plan called for like 5 of them but based on advice from here, I scaled back. I also really don't want to end up hurt.

I miss seeing Coach Charles around here. :( He told me the same thing. He also told me better to go into a race injury-free and under-trained rather than fully-trained and hurt. I think that's some pretty sound advice.

I tend to agree with others that the back to back runs are not a must do. I think it's more of a mental preparation than a physical one.

However, for me they are a necessity, at least mentally. I have only done one marathon (2014 WDW) and it didn't go smoothly. This time around I am doing Dopey and I want to know that I can at least make it to 20 miles on very tired legs. I am touring the parks on top of doing all 4 races, and I know nothing can prepare my legs for that, but I am going to get as close as possible! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the advice everyone! I have done a few short runs the day after long one and just the increased mileage in general has mentally prepared me to run on tired legs (I hope!) This will be my first marathon and first goofy so it will be hard no matter what, so getting to the starting line uninjured is definitely best.

Turns out I couldn't have run today even if I wanted to, I spent all day in bed thanks to a nasty cold, so I guess that's a forced rest day or two....better sick now then in January I guess!

1 mile into a 5 mile run today and the joint that connects my big toe to my foot started hurting. It was mild enough that I just kept going. The pain got worse about an hour after I ran. It hurts to flex the toe and point it up. Not terrible pain but noticable with every step. Now, tonight, the pain has moved up the top of my foot along what I think is the tendon. I don't remember any event that could have caused this injury. Any ideas? I took an Aleeve.
The one thing that has changed in my training is that I have ran on the treadmill the past 5 runs due to the weather. I only run 3x a week.

I have something similar and was googling it tonight. Try looking up "turf toe". I've also had problems with foot tendonitis. The recommendations for both are ice and rest....my tendonitis healed fairly quickly (a week off of running and a few weeks of running but also icing my foot 3x a day). My toe just started last night so hopefully that can heal just as quickly.

Good luck! My rule of thumb is when in doubt, ice it and take an anti-inflammatory and a rest day

So just when I think I'm back on track with training for the marathon, I get sick. I've come down with a full blown cold or flu or something. It's nasty enough that I'm physically exhausted on top of everything else. Actually the exhaustion is the worst symptom of them all which sucks because I probably could run through the sniffles if it was just that.

I really didn't need to miss more regular training after the incident with my hip. But I literally don't have the energy to get on a treadmill right now. Or go run outside. So I'm just going to have to wait until it goes away.

And deal with the fact that I have to meet with my group project members tomorrow while I'm sick. If they catch what I got at this point its their own damn fault because I was at the point on the project two weeks before they got to it. So if they had actually done their work on time we wouldn't be working through Thanksgiving break and when I'm sick.

And I'm sorry if I sound like miss grumpy pants. But a) I'm sick and b) I've put up with way too much from these two about the delays to not be grumpy about the fact I'm having to do this while sick.

Have them wear a mask. Or you wear a mask. Or just spread it and cackle.

Getting this sickness now is better than in January, think of it that way! Trust me, you wouldn't want to run the race while having this creeping crud! :headache::sick:

Got a 20-21-miler tomorrow. Planned it for Thanksgiving morning but due to weather, I am pushing it up one day. I will say I'm a little nervous as the previous 20-miler irritated my right foot dorsi flexors and caused me a week and half or no running.

Should this be repeated, this will probably be my last run of this length until the full. I will plan sever 10 - 15 mile runs for December should that be the case. However I've seen a few areas that could have been improved and will try out some new stuff on this run.

Becoming excited for the full as its coming!

I've run Goofy several times without a single back to back run. I think they can be helpful but are not required. The training you get from a normal plan for a full is good enough to get you through.

Definitely agree with all of this, especially the bolded portion. :worship:

This makes complete sense to me and is probably a good idea for most people. The only reason I'm making sure to do the back to back runs is for the mental aspect of it. For some reason, that may or may not be logical, I like to know in my head that I can finish the race before I run it. Before I ran my first 1/2 marathon I did a 15 mile run and then I knew that no matter what I could finish it. So I'm doing several back to back runs training for goofy including a 12 followed by 26 in a few weeks. If I can do that in training then race day it shouldn't be a problem. That being said, I also won't risk injury just to complete the back to back so I'll probably take it a little slow.

I completely agree with the mental aspect of it! And also, depending on your fitness level, running 13.1 miles the day before a full marathon might really make a difference! I want to be prepared for how my legs are going to feel in that situation. I don't want to be at mile 10 of the marathon and think "holy #$&#, this is going to be way tougher than I thought!"

I totally get the mental aspect - just be careful you don't overextend yourself and end up sick or injured. :)

A little late to the party here - just got a bib through a TA reservation so the WDW Half will be my first half marathon!

Just wondering if there are discounted tickets available through any Disney travel providers. I was able to buy discounted passes for the Disneyland 10k weekend through Get Travel, but I don't see that they are offering tickets for WDW weekend.
