Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

Joining in late here. Real life has not left much time for the DIS in a while. Can't wait to run this race!! I've ran the EE and the princess, looking forward to adding this to my disney runs.
Anyone that did this last year have info on the after party?
Is there an area kids can stay at while parents run?
Are there a lot of character opportunities at the after party?
Did you feel the after party was crowded and what time did it seem to clear out more?

Sorry if this has already been covered, I've tried searching through and no luck in a short amount of time.

Happy training everyone.:)

1) The friends that were waiting for me only wanted to do Future World attractions after I finished. Let me tell you....walking down the hills to get to Soarin'. Yeah. Not this year, even though it was a walk on.
2)I too have never observed a 'kids area' while parents run.
3) There were characters in a bunch of pics that my friends who actually ventured into World Showcase.
4) Last year's party seemed FAR less crowded than the first year. That was a cluster.

I'm walking the Wine and Dine 1/2 so my friend and I won't be finishing until toward the end of the after party. We got tickets for our husbands but does anyone know if they can enter the party while we are racing, leave to watch us at the finish line and go back in with us? I sent this question to runDisney a week ago but haven't received a response.

TIA

I don't see why that would be an issue. They give runners wrist bands, there should be something in place for a re-entry into the party.

Just found (and registered) for this site. This is great. Such positive and cooperative folks.

I registered for Wine and Dine the second it opened. Race captures two of my favorites: running and food.

I have since signed up for my first marathon, and will be getting that Mickey medal.

Chill-laxing after my 13 mile run yesterday! :cool1:

You will have to join us West Coast DL fans for the Disneyland 1/2 marathon to get a Coast to Coast medal to go along with your Mickey medal next year. If you don't know about them you will see them at the finish. I'm looking forward to my first one after the race!

Would love C2C...but that would be a hard sell for the rest of family. Considering we live about 2 hours for Disney World and are passholder, they wont see the reasoning for Disneyland. (Short sighted I know.)

One of these years....

For those who eat along the run, has anyone tried just plain old sugar cubes? I remember Jeff Galloway recommending that at last year's expo in case anyone had stomach issues with anything else. I was thinking about bringing them along.

Personally speaking, I would have to say that you would need to plan for more than just DL if you were to go out there. I was out there in April and we couldn't understand how people made an entire vacation of only going to DL/DCA (but that was just our opinion). I have family that lives in Irvine, which was part of the purpose of our trip. So maybe adding other points of interest would help encourage your family to go? Also, would they object to you going alone for the race? That is what I am doing for this one.

I am already going to Wine and Dine by myself as one of my DD's activities decided to schedule on the same evening as the race. We had already booked two nights and paid for race...so I am driving down by myself.

Still feel awkward going by myself, considering they are they huge Disney fans. (I am guilty by association).

Not sure I could do DL by myself, though might be able to con some athletic coworkers into it.

Over the summer I vowed that I would never again do an early fall race if it meant 10-13 mile runs in August. I can't wait to run in 20 degree weather again!
I've had stomach problems on occasion. I don't eat during my runs and try not to eat at least an hour before I run and this has helped. It's also usually when I've been moving quickly, which it sounds like you were! :) It's usually just a little nausea that passes within an hour or so. You might want to track of what you ate before, during and immediately after your run so you can compare in the future.

I hear you! I thought signing up for a Nov. race would keep me out of the heat in the Summer. July and August were killer and I just told my hubby that I won't be running outside in the heat next Summer. There were a few nights it was upper 80's and one night 90 when we ran at 9 p.m.
I think I am going to start writing it down. I'm still so confused. It was ALL day and last night until bedtime. Leveling out this morning it seems.

Oh man I am totally understanding the heat issue. Here in Oklahoma City, many of our summer days saw temps around 110 (before heat index) and it was still over 100 even if it hadn't reached 110. Even at night, it was still around 100. I was doing a lot of treadmill running...I just couldn't go any farther than a couple miles (if that) running out in that heat. This current week is the first one since the beginning of June I believe that we do not have a day where the high is in the 90s. I told my DH that I was SO glad that this half was pushed to November.

I have had stomach issues before while running (and a generally finicky stomach/IBS). I make sure to avoid "heavy" foods the night/morning before (no grease or cream). This has helped tremendously.

Honey stingers cause me no problems at all. Just looking at Gu or gels makes my stomach turn:).

I think you're right about the honey. I've heard that about GU and gels, so I'm just staying away from the. I did eat fried the night before - an egg roll. I've had an iron stomach, but not anymore. My body told me loud and clear yesterday to make some changes.

I mistakenly ate homemade chili Saturday night...totally forgetting about 13 miles the next morning. Four miles in I had some "GU issues".

Things settled down after that.

I too forgot about my Sunday morning run while I was eating pizza on Saturday night.... oops. Did not appreciate that on sunday afterwards. Thank goodness it wasn't until after my run that I started to feel sick.

I personally like the Clif Shot Blocks. I have a semi-sensitive stomach or so I thought. Now that I've learned to eat better (and LESS) in the 24 hours leading up to a run, I have had much fewer GI issues post-run. However, interval training, or any really fast runing still gives me some trouble no matter what I have eaten (or not eaten).

I love Honey Stingers. They are so tasty and I never feel like they're heavy in my stomach. Everything I've read says you need to consume some calories on longer runs 30 min into running. I don't have any idea how some of you can do long runs and not take in some calories. I'd be worried about my blood sugar levels after finishing the race. Pretzels are another snack that some people swear by when running. I'm another one who wants to gag when I see gels!
I've really got to kick up my training. I've taken some time off because I wasn't feeling well and now it's like twice as hard to get going again!

Thanks for the feedback. Wow, you're the second person on the thread to talk about the honey stingers. It's making me think I should listen to my hubby, too. He had one during our run and said he felt like "Chariots of Fire" after it yesterday. (Offered one to me, but I wasn't hungry at all and was doing fine energy wise) He said he was on "like donkey kong". So, I guess, that's what I'm going to go with on the next long run. He said Lance Armstrong swears by them too. Seems to be the thing. I just have to get passed the thought of chugging some honey - texture wise. Hubby told me to chase it with water.

Hope you're feeling better. Hang in there and keep going!

Rut-ro! Must have been the beans! I'll try to remember that about chili. It's just getting cooler here and I can't wait to eat chili again. I'll make sure not to eat it before a long run, for sure.

It was probably the cayenne pepper and the additional hot sauce that was too liberally add into the bowl. Wow, I really wasn't paying attention that night.

I had never heard of Honey Stingers until this thread. I went to the website and saw there are a few different types... gels, waffles, chews... which is the best?

I use the energy chews. They're like chewy fruit snacks and really sweet. Fruit Smoothie is my favorite! I bought a Lemon-Lime, but haven't tried them yet. My SIL loves the Pomegranate Passion ones. Check with your local sports store, our REI out here gives a discount if you buy 12+ packages.
