Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

I had never heard of Honey Stingers until this thread. I went to the website and saw there are a few different types... gels, waffles, chews... which is the best?

I like the waffles for before my run and the chews for during. I don't like gels so I have never tried theirs. I love the cherry blossom and fruit smoothie flavors best. Yum!

I use the energy chews. They're like chewy fruit snacks and really sweet. Fruit Smoothie is my favorite! I bought a Lemon-Lime, but haven't tried them yet. My SIL loves the Pomegranate Passion ones. Check with your local sports store, our REI out here gives a discount if you buy 12+ packages.

Thanks for the recommendations! I have never had gels before as the idea is not exactly appealing to me. I think I will try the fruit chews for sure. Beth, thanks for sharing about the waffles before a run...I will have to try that also!

I like the energy chews - just like fruit snacks. I found all the flavors have a nice honey aftertaste (honestly they all kind of taste the same to me). Sometimes I use them as motivation. Like, "when I hit mile X I can finally have some of these tasty things!" :)

I just wish the packages for stuff like this were smaller. I always divide and re-wrap them in Saran wrap.

Wow...a lot of good information in this thread! I read through all 43 pages yesterday and my head was spinning...

I have a couple/few questions that I didn't see answered that maybe other members might be able to help me understand. I also know that the race is at capacity, but I'm thinking ahead to 2013.

1) Any DVC members staying on points, when did you make your reservation?
The reason I ask is that it seems like the W&D 1/2 Marathon dates were announced less than 11 months ahead of the race. I'd like to make my reservation early, but I need to borrow points to do so. I'm afraid of guessing the wrong week and being stuck with borrowed points

2) If you do not own at any of the host resorts, did anyone have any luck getting a DVC ressie on points at the 7-month mark? Are you better off just booking your home resort and waitlisting?

3) Are there any packages available through runDisney that do not include the room? I realize I can get the DVC discounted entry, but is there anything else I'd miss out on ( discounted tix, souvenirs etc?)

Thanks in advance, you're all the best!
Remember to thank the support, spectators, and volunteers, too! I ran the Goofy a couple years ago and everyone involved makes these events so Extra Magical!

Good luck to this year's runners!!!

Count me in as a lover of the honey stinger waffles. Before my long saturday run I will grab one and toss some extra peanut butter on it. Wash it down with a cupa joe and I'm all set. I like the gels too but I'm getting hooked on the chews. I like the limeade and pink lemonade.

Thanks for the feedback. Wow, you're the second person on the thread to talk about the honey stingers. It's making me think I should listen to my hubby, too. He had one during our run and said he felt like "Chariots of Fire" after it yesterday. (Offered one to me, but I wasn't hungry at all and was doing fine energy wise) He said he was on "like donkey kong". So, I guess, that's what I'm going to go with on the next long run. He said Lance Armstrong swears by them too. Seems to be the thing. I just have to get passed the thought of chugging some honey - texture wise. Hubby told me to chase it with water.

Hope you're feeling better. Hang in there and keep going!
I do use gels but I don't "chug" them. It takes me probably a minute to eat a gel of any kind - I take little sips of it, I guess. And definitely chase with water!

For anyone whose stomach can't handle the sport stuff, have you tried just fruit snacks? Like raisins or the little packages of gummies you put in your kids' lunches? On a medium-long run (7-8 miles), I will usually do one Gu and one fruit snack.

As for temperature, I prefer heat to cold, and love summer nighttime runs - but I have to say the hot summer we had was starting to get to me. The cooler runs this past week or two have been really refreshing!

I am another one for the Honeystinger chews. I am currently using the orange flavor and think they taste great (although they do make me thirsty). Since I don't need a whole packet for a shorter distance run, I put a few into a snack size ziplock and keep it in my shorts' pocket. I gave up on the gels a long time ago. I also like Mike and Ikes, they are a good little boost and hold up well in your pocket.

My sil and I are running the w&d 1/2, and my sister is now interested in running as well. I know that the race is sold out, so here are my questions:

1. If I end up not running (hurt knee), can she take my place? Would she need to "be" me, or does Disney care?

2. Would it be possible to buy someone's registration they aren't going to use? Anyone ever heard of doing that?

Transfers are technically not allowed..

If your sister runs in your place, she would have run under your name, which means she won't get credit for the run.

It works the same if you were to buy someone elses. You have to run as that person. It's really not allowed and if you get caught, you can be banned from runDisney events.

Well, I tried one of my hubby's honey stingers this week while at home. I couldn't consume it all. I just can't do it straight up like that. Will have to try the chews. If they're like gummies or fruit chews, I can handle those.

Out of curiosity... is anyone doing a costume?

I am not, but I am a bigger guy and sweat like nobody's business. Any costume would be a soggy mess by the time we hit DHS.

Ohhh I would love to see your Merida if you go with that one! What a neat idea!

I am doing Belle. Just need a couple more pieces for it.

I am doing her "formal" dress. I have a teal-blue skirt and top and am getting gold lamé to make the belt and a headband. I may find some red extensions for my hair. When I make it all I will take a picture and post it:)

I'm doing Ariel, wearing these great green shorts I found that have an orange under layer, and a purple t-shirt!

I strongly considered going as a Jedi, but have decided against it for now. I don't want the lightsaber to be a problem hanging from my running belt, and I feel like the Yoda backpack is very expensive for a costume prop that could wind up driving me crazy during the race not to mention add additional weight that I do not want to deal with.

I'm toying with a Prince Phillip costume as if I can find the right colored material for a tech shirt that just might work.

oh, I'm hoping to get my husband to be prince eric, just by wearing black shorts, a white shirt, and a red sash around his waist!

what kind of running belts do people recommend?
