Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

Due to getting behind, I chose to make sure I fit in all the long training sessions from Galloway's Disneyland 1/2 training plan, so I wound up doing quite a few long runs consecutively on Saturdays. Granted I'm training at a 15 minute per mile pace, but that I did okay.

It will soon be time to head to Disneyland for the Disneyland 1/2 and part 1 of my Coast to Coast challenge. Hope everyone's training goes well.

I will be joining you on Sunday. I also walked Tinkerbell in January so the DL 1/2 is just for fun and not part of my Coast to Coast this year. I'm looking forward to Wine & Dine for my first Coast to Coast.

Good luck to both you this week-end at the DL Half and any of our other DL Half runners! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

I am not traveling alone, but I will be running alone. I have a question about spectators. My best friend will not be purchasing a finish line party ticket, and quite honestly, I'm not interested in taking full advantage of the party...I just want to go in, walk around a bit to say I was there, and then head out so I can go to bed. From a "map" I saw a few pages earlier, it appears there is a spectator viewing area out in the parking lot...is that correct? Now obviously the location could change, but I'm trying to figure it out. So if it is in the parking lot...how easy would it be for my friend to be in that area...and then meet me after I exit the park from the party? Is it just a matter of my friend walking over to the front gate or is there something else? I hope this makes sense and would appreciate the help!
Is anyone able to help with this? Thanks! :thumbsup2

Sorry for the second post, I don't know how to edit a previous post while in the app.

Does anyone have an opinion about waiting the full 2 weeks between long runs? (galloways schedule) I did my 6.5 last Tuesday and was going to do my 8 on Saturday or Sunday. However, I'd really rather run it outside and the humidity is supposed to be fairly high this weekend but rather pleasant tomorrow night (Thursday). Would it be bad to do it tomorrow instead? (of course I did hills on my run last night and my legs are feeling it today so I don't know for certain that I'll be recovered in time anyway). I run 3x a week and usually about 3.5-4 miles per short run.

Hi! I'm new to the thread, but am excited to read about everyone's training and trip planning! :cool1: I've created a hybrid training program using both Jeff Galloway and Hal Higdon's programs. Hal Higdon recommends "step back" weeks, where you will up your mileage on your weekly long runs for 3-4 weeks, then pull back significantly on the next week (i.e. build up to 8 or 10 miles, then on your pull back week, do 4 or 5). I find this really refreshes my training, and it's something to look forward to! When I was training for the full WDW marathon, I missed a full week of running completely due to a bad flu bug. We were up to 18 miles and I was terrified about losing conditioning. Surprisingly, though, the first post-flu run was one of the best of the entire training. So I think your body tells you sometimes to take a break, and you won't lose any significant gains by either running shorter, or even taking a couple of days off. In fact, if you're feeling particularly run down or sore, you may risk more injury by trying to push through it. It's been a brutal summer for humidity, so I'm completely with you on waiting until it's a bit cooler.
Happy training, everyone! Disney Racing Season is heating up!!:woohoo:

I'm running 8 this weekend too! I combined the Hal Higdon & Jeff Galloway plans as well, to make my own modified plan to add a few more miles during the week (4 runs/week as apposed to Jeff Galloway's 3 run/week plan)

My more experienced marathoning friends tell me I only have to scale back my long run every 4th week. But does that mean skipping tempo runs on those easy weeks too? Opinions anyone?

(I'm a little frustrated by my pace and would like to get speedier. Hoping a few tempo runs will help. My long runs are taking f o r e v e r...)

That's great!! Hope it goes really well - wishing you wings on your feet!! :simba:
I don't find I need to scale back my tempo runs on the easier weeks, but I will occasionally take the advice of the trainers to ease back speed (not distance) on the long runs if I'm feeling particularly tired. They all say the pace of your long runs doesn't matter; it's the distance that counts. Jeff Galloway says just walk if you have to, but get in the distance no matter what.
I've been trying some advice from Runner's World to get my speed up - they have a fun workout where you just do quick pick ups (200 metres or so). In the middle of a run, decide you're going to run flat out to the next light pole. Then run easy for a bit and then do another pick-up when you're ready. It makes the workouts more fun / interesting and it definitely helps with speed!
Have a great run! :thumbsup2

Pick-ups! I've recently started doing these as well, but without realizing they had a real name. I find they also help keep things interesting on a route I've run a lot.

I think my husband and I would always want to do them at a different point, but we should try this! :hyper:

I just found out that I get to interview for a volunteer position at our zoo next weekend which I am so incredibly jazzed about I can't even explain it! The bad part of it is that EVERY weekend in October would be a training day for all of Saturday which leaves only Sunday for long runs. Its a bummer for me since I have chronic migraines and have often relied on having that 'other' day to run them if something happened and I couldn't on one of the days. What especially sucks is that the last day in October we are supposed to do our final long run for 14 miles but we have a red eye flight down to Orlando that night! So I either need to run two long ones in a row NOW and skip a 4 miler or just not do that one altogether. (we do the Jeff Galloway exclusively). Decisions decisions...!

Well I finally got in to see an orthopedic doctor to try and find out what's wrong with my knee. He is going to do an MRI but he thinks I have a torn meniscus:( So bummed because I was really doing great with my training.

Congrats on the interview and good luck!
Is there anyway you can move that 14 miler to Friday before you fly on
saturday night?

 Try to wait to worry too much until you get the MRI results. Sending pixie dust to you.... (Having had major knee issues myself, I am really pulling for good news for you!) Knee injuries are NO FUN!!! :(

Saw the finisher medal today at the Rock and Roll Half Marathon Expo in Virginia Beach.....super nice with beautiful deep purple ribbon. Can't wait to earn that beauty in a few months! :)

Sadly no... we have to work that day since we are using all of our vacation time for the trip itself. Well, I shouldn't say NO, we technically could. I dunno how great running for almost 3 hours after a full work day would be. :crazy2:

I've actually done it after work when we knew the weather Sat would be bad. I hate that training run, but since it's the last big one we got through it!

I was so happy Disney released those fall discounts. I ended up saving several hundred dollars on my Wine & Dine weekend, and was able to add the Friday night Christmas party to my package.

Hard 5 miles today as its humid here in Va. Slow at 1:05, but done! Just keep telling myself it's one run closer to Disney. I was able to talk my parents into the new Segway tour in Epcot Friday morning before the race. Easy early Xmas gift and was able to use their DVC discount.

You will be my inspiration! It is probably the best solution... especially since we will be treating ourselves to leaving for Orlando late the next day, my husband can pack the last bit of our stuff while I am in training, AND we will be doing the run after a full day too... maybe it will be good for us?!

Oh thats wonderful! I had hoped we would as well but the only place I could find a deal was at ASSp, even with my AP discount! Finally a room opened up at Caribbean Beach today but even that was still $260 for the one night..! I will just stay at Sports for $99 at that point... we ended up giving up on staying at AoA that night... taxis and logistics were STILL scaring me, so I cancelled it. :worried:

Great job! I've had digestive issues the last couple of days and we ended up leaving the house an hour later than we wanted... once we started driving away my husband told me where this new route we were going to was... a half hour away with the sun setting! And he didn't know if there were lights there or not! I was SO ready to go do our 8, but we decided to bag it for the night since we wouldn't finish until 10 or later and do it tomorrow morning. In fact I should hit the hay since we need to be up early for it before going to see a house we might buy! :scratchin It would be our first one... it was supposed to be two but the house we REALLY want of course went off the market the day we inquired. The homeowners are taking their time getting back to us even though we have already said that pending inspection etc we would meet their asking price (sacrilege I know but its 95% of what we want!) I so hope they give us a chance..!

My DW and I are both doing the Wine & Dine and are really looking forward to it. We have a friend that has lost ~40 pounds this year and she recently asked us about this event and would really like to join us but race is full through runDisney. Does anyone know of other ways to register, perhaps through some other organization? I know some non-profits put teams together with fundraising goals. Thanks.

Nicole--I didn't know you were doing w&d again this year! Very exciting. Is your dh running too?

I would love to stay at AoA also, but am saving it for a non-race vacation. The whole taxis and logistics as you mention scare me as well. I'm sure it is not as terrible as it sounds, but I definitely don't want to be dealing with it...especially post race & party at like 3am. I am staying at ASMu instead. I have a room only reservation the first night with the fall discount, then my next three nights will be with free dining.

Is there any way to register once the race is sold out other than gettravel.com? That would require booking hotel through them, and I have already booked our trip directly through Disney. I just realized we'll be there during the race. My DH would love to run it, but of course it's sold out. Do they every open up registrations? Or is there another way to purchase? Any advice is welcome.
