Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

From what I've read people started heading over on the buses around 7pm.....too close to eat and drink for me anyway :). However, I am excited that a night race will mean a big breakfast at Boma for me :)

I'll be running in this too. As of now we are staying at AKL. This will be my last race before I try to tackle the Goofy in January. November can't get here soon enough.

When do you eat prior to the race? I have never participated in a night race before, so I assume I will have a normal breakfast, heavy lunch ( pasta, protein ) and then a banana and English muffin with peanut butter an hour or so before the race. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I second the idea of heading to the buses early. We were at BW last year and were on the 2nd or 3rd bus, but by the time we left the line was all the way back to the lobby (it picked up at the convention center.....Then once you got to WWofS the buses just came to a halt. The drop off just was not handled very well. Hopefully it will be better, but not sure what they will do differently.

As for food, we eat a big breakfast around 10:00 and then graze the rest of the day. Hummus, grapes, cheese, hard boiled eggs, ice cream. Nothing heavy. We took lara bars to the start, but I don't think I ate one. I try to think of it as what would I be doing the 8 hours before a morning race. And I very rarely eat much more than a snack bar or a piece of toast or banana the morning of a race.

I just tried to figure out what I do for a normal half marathon time wise and convert the time to a night race. Ie, I'd usually eat carbs a few days before stopping about 12hrs prior to race time. Then rest and banana and toast about 2 hrs prior. Converting that will put me at a big breakfast by 10am then a small lunch nap then snack around 7-8pm. Enough time for my body to process everything. Everyone is a bit different.

My game plan is Boma for breakfast, Expo then maybe shopping and lunch at Downtown Disney. Then back to the Boardwalk for nap, getting ready and snack. Figure I'll head to busses around 7pm, they always have entertainment pre-race, so I won't get bored!

Question: The gift card you get...does that have to be used at the after party? Or could I use it later (like the next night at the F&W, for instance?)? My wife and I will be doing a long weekend for the Festival; I'd like to do this race. We're both training for the Disney Half in January, but she doesn't think she'll be ready for this yet. There's really not a lot of value for us in going to the after party; we are pass holders so the rides arent that big of a deal to us and we are going to be doing Epcot the next night, anyway. So, I'd rather not buy an extra ticket for her.

Also...can she watch me start the race at WWOS and also finish at Epcot? Is that possible? Or would we need to pick just one?

the gift card can be used anytime.
What is the deal with transportation to the expo?

Checked and the race is 74% full, pretty impressed as I don't think the Princess was that popular this far out. Does anyone know how many people usually participate in the Wine and Dine?

Yeah! I registered! My sister ran this race last year and I wanted to join her so badly but i was injured. Now it's my turn! Nervous and excited....

Hoping this thread will start to pick up as we get closer. I can't quite decide how my race day should go. What are your plans? Or for those that have already run, what did you do? I have a couple options. We are flying in super late on Friday and will probably not get to sleep until 2-3 am Sat. the 10th.

Plan A: Sleep in until 10:30, get ready then take cab to Chef Mickey's breakfast at 11:20. Around 1 take bus to a host resort then catch a bus to EXPO. Explore expo until 3. Take cab back to AoA. Pool/relax/maybe nap 3:30-6:30. Snack for dinner, cab to WWoS at 7:30.

Plan B: Sleep in as long as can. Get ready. Grab quick bagel. Take cab to Expo (probably around 12:30) Back from Expo about 2. Relax/pool/unpack (2-3:30) Get ready and head to buses at 4. Table service LIGHT dinner in MK with hubby and DDs at 5. (Maybe - Be our Guest) 6:30-7:30 fun in MK. 7:30 leave family to party @ MK while I take bus to Epcot or host resort then transfer to WWoS resort (or just take cab). Family meets me @ finish line. (Not planning on staying for after party).

Plan C: Sleep in until 11 or so, just do Expo and hang out resort all day. Then kids and hubby could head to MK @ 7:30 when I head to WWoS.

Family would probably prefer B. I like the idea of A, starting the morning (and our trip) off with a character breakfast but am worried about being rushed or tired since we get in so late the night before. C is good too but I'd get no park time.

Plan A would work. However, I wouldn't plan two hours for the expo. It shouldn't be super crowded on Saturday and it has not had the volume of vendors or exhibits as Marathon Weekend or the Princess Half.

I am going to be getting in late Friday evening as well. I am planning on doing the 5K in the morning, heading to breakfast, swinging by the expo to pick up my bib and shirts and swag, then back to the resort to have lunch and relax until its time to head to the race. It's worked for me the past two years and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. However, I have not had anyone traveling with me (who wasn't racing) so that may factor into your equation differently.

I am pretty sure my day will be something like:
1.. Sleep in as late as I can.
2. Eat a big bowl of cereal and bananas
3. Do something relaxing like pool or shopping for a while-
4. head back to resort in afternoon for rest-
5. around 3pm have a light meal and hit the coffee hard after- 5pm head to Epcot
6. Head to the bus line in front of Epcot around 7:30

Our plan is to get off the ship (we'll be on the Fantasy for the week prior), get to our hotel and check in then go to the expo, have lunch at Tony's around one then go back to the hotel to nap/get ready. Grab something very light and small on the way out (banana and yogurt, a doubleshot, something like that) and use the buses from POP to the start.

Pop is not a host resort, so it is highly doubtful you will be able to catch a bus from there to the start.

Oh, roger... when you said it would get us to the expo I thought it would also get us to the race start. If not, then we'll just take a taxi or go to a theme park then over depending on what time we are ready to go.

Just dropping in to say hello to my fellow WADHM'ers. Very excited about my upcoming November WDW trip BECAUSE I will be earning my first CTC medal. I ran the TBHM in January.

What is the weather like at night in November in Orlando? My HM training will start in the dryer fall Pacific NW weather then quickly change to running in the rain, rain, wind, and more rain.

Hey fellow NW'er -- Tink was my 1st 1/2 too, and this is my C2C attempt. Did you register for the 2013 Tink yet? I'm doing it one more time by the DH put his foot down on continuing legacy status after 2013. We just can't swing the expense for travel & race reg's.

So, is it correct that family can watch you at the finish line OUTSIDE of Epcot? I'm thinking of saving the nearly $200 I'd have to pay just for my hubby and kids to attend. Worried they will be tired, as well as I. They could instead enjoy extra magic hours in MK, then be there to watch me finish. Would this work?

I'd love to know this too. My DH and DDs will probably just stay asleep because I refuse to pay that much when they're going to be grumpy and sleepy. Not to mention we have to drive to Miami Sunday morning for a cruise! However, if it's really easy to see the runners heading to the finish, they might get up and come see me, then we'll head back to the hotel together.

I'm freaking out about the packet pickup for my DH and DDs. He's doing the 5k and they're doing kids races, but our flight doesn't arrive (scheduled at least - worried if it's late) until 5:14 pm into MCO. We planned to take the DME, then have him jump on an expo bus at the ASMov and pick up his & DDs packets. However, I'm hearing that the DME can take 90 min which has me worried he won't make the 7 pm packet pickup closing.

Any tips, insight, advice??

It's a slow day at work, I will try to make a map with google earth or something to show where the finish was last year.

I e-mailed runDisney about bib pick-up the morning of the 5K (not sure about kid's races, as I don't have any.) They said bib pick up will be available in the parking lot prior to the 5K, but in order to get your t-shirt and other race stuff you would need to attend the expo. They also reinforced that you would need to go to the expo to pick up all things regarding the half.

For those who have raced in the past it sounds like it's ok to hit the expo on Sat without it being too busy, is that right?

I'll be flying down Wed the 7th and not leaving till the 12th. Going to spend time in the parks and enjoying the Food and Wine Festival but only got a 4 day Park Hopper in hopes of using Saturday as a relaxation day till the race. Was going to use the other days to enjoy the park then plan on going to breakfast Sat am, then the expo, Downtown (maybe) then back to the Boardwalk to rest, eat snack, run, then eat!!

Oh whew! Thank you so much. I'm such a worrying control-freak, this is driving me nuts. I would have been a nervous wreck on our Friday travel day! Now I'll just see if he makes it to the expo Friday but know that he can pick his bib up before the race if we get delayed. Thank you, thank you, thank you! :)

I'll email runDisney to see if the same is true for kids races.

This is what I can recall. If my memory is off, please let me know and I can revise the drawing to be more accurate. Hope this helps.
