Hi gang- it's been 8 days since I have ran..... I have had the worst cold of my life! Called in sick all week, can't walk up the stairs without running out of breath type of cold. I'm now to the point of feeling somewhat human, but still cough every 45 seconds, not kidding.

Question: in my PRL (pre running life :lmao:), if I was sick I wouldn't ever think of doing this but, I really want to get out and move.... Do you think a light jog/ walk would benefit my lungs or make it worse? I guess I'm wondering if moving around will clear out the lungs.....

Any thoughts from running geeks that have had bad chest colds?

Thanks as usual!
Michele. Usually I say "dig deep", but right now I'll go with Breathe!

I'd say do what you feel you can do! I find it often helps my sinuses if I run with a cold- if you start coughing hard walk and do what you can, (as long as you don't have a fever)

Had my longest run this morning 8 miles in 1:20, so a 10min/mile. Pretty good and felt OK afterwards. Did start to feel a blister come on under my toe, will have to tape it up next time.

Last night I did 4 miles on the treadmill, and I now understand why some refer to it as the dreadmill. I wasn't even a mile in and I was bored out of my mind. Tried watching a show, but didn't enjoy that in the least. Listened to a podcast, but was so BORED just looking at the numbers on the screen and the random people walking around the gym... I needed something to look at it, but the silly television show was not doing it for me!!

For the past few months I've been running outside, and I just love how gorgeous it is here in Pennsylvania. Running outside is so much more fun! And entertaining! And freeing! And I can focus on the beauty around me as I run towards something, anything - even if it's just the next mailbox! On the treadmill, I felt as though I was trapped in place. My heart was pumping, my muscles felt great, but I had a real mental problem going on... Totally felt negative about the act of running, just counting down to when it would be over...

Crazy thing is that I've used a treadmill at the gym many times before and it never bothered me until I fell in love with running outside. I once was blind, but now I see... :)

So Princesses - what is your trick for loving your treadmill runs? It will be icy and snowy here all too soon, and I need to figure out how to change my mind about this treadmill thing. Help!!

I can't give you any advice because I fear the dreadmill with all my being! :scared1: I am very athletic and coordinated but at the same time clumsy, if that makes any sense. I'm really scared of missing a step, or my knee buckling like it does sometimes on the elliptical and breaking my hiney! I'm going to have to face my fear of the dreaded dreadmill because NY winters are not pretty. Good luck with your training! I loved all of the suggestions the other peeps had. Music works best to motivate me while running, and I love the movie and tv show idea too.

So after 2 years of stalking the boards and wondering IF I could run a half marathon I decided just to go for it and I am in for both. It will be a solo trip so hoping to meet up with some others from the DIS while down there. I do feel like I am late in the game. My current best 5k times are right around 40 minutes but with 5 months to really prepare I can only hope for the best. Thanks for all the inspiration.

Great job!! You are off to a terrific start! I will be down with my DH but I'm running solo. :goodvibes:goodvibes

Made it back out today after GI bug. Decided to take it slow and run my long run, which for me is 4 miles. Felt great to be back out there and to finish my long run with no walking breaks -outside! I really needed the mental health time, too.

YAY! No walking breaks! Stupendous! That's awesome! I did my first 4 mile long run on Saturday and it definitely didn't look like that! I know that in time I will be following in your footsteps with training. Keep up the great work!:thumbsup2:cool1::cheer2:

So good and bad news to report - good news is did 8 miles running the whole time this morning in 1:43 - and that included the two water breaks. Bad news is that I now have blisters under on of my toenails on my left foot - I know, I know, get bigger shoes but I tried that and got severe shin splints on my right side. So, probably going back to the running store with both pairs of shoes and seeing what they suggest. But, nothing is going to keep me from being excited about the long run!!

Great job on the run! Ouch about the blisters! I'm wishing you a speedy recovery time! I don't know if this is good or bad, but for me I drain my blisters then use the bandaid blister thingies which allow me to wear shoes and not be in pain.

I did my 1st ever 10K today!!! It did not go as well as I hoped but the humidity slowed me down. I finished in 1 hr 4 min. My 7mile run last week was 1 hr 7 min, so that is why I am so disappointed. But, it was a cool 60 degrees last week with no humidity and today it was a very humid(95%) 70ish degrees. lol.

Anyway...that is behind me now and I am going to finally register for the Princess :cool1: I cannot wait to go and run in February!!

CONGRATS!! :cheer2::woohoo::cool1:SO COOL!! I have my 10K next month and I have no idea how on earth I'm going to do it in a good time with my knees, but I'm working for it!

Finished running in my first race!

And a PR!! 5km, 44:22 (8:41/km). The Island Girl race is very well organized and along a gentle even trail. Lots of encouragement from the 1/2 marathoners who left on their run as soon as the last 5kmer returned. I was able to wave Vicki (BunnyFoo form the Wish Team) on as she was leaving, GO Vicki!!!

If I can train to keep up that pace or close to it, I will be thrilled at the Princess in Feb. I am doing the Castaway Cay 5k in October (3x times since we are cruising b2b2b), then a 10k in November. I am a runner, wow!

I meet a great lady on the Ferry across to the run and her husband took a shot of me at the finish. And the list was posted before the awards, it was great to see how I did, 6 from the end, but a PR, so I am thrilled.

CONGRATS! That's great! I didn't know there were races on CC, that's super cool! :thumbsup2:cool1:

I am making myself decide this week whether or not to register for the Princess 1/2. Finished the C25K over the summer and moved on to Galloway's program; just did a 6 mile run this weekend and averaged 12 minutes/mi, which is pretty good for me :thumbsup2. The thought of a half marathon scares the heck out of me but I think I need a shake-up since I turn 40 next year. Reading all of these posts is really making me want to commit :)

Yes there is a 5K race on CC.
I ran it twice when I was on the Dream Cruise back in August.
You get a racing bib.
There's no timing done, so you will need to do it yourself.
It's pretty laid back - meet by the bike rental, get a number and off the group goes.

The first time I did it, it was hot and humid and rained during the race (but that felt good).
The second time I did it, it was even hotter. I got completely soaked from sweat.
At that time, I was actually training for the Disneyland 1/2 marathon and needed to run 11 miles. So I ran 4 miles (the 5K plus another mile), went on the ship to completely change, and then ran another 7 miles on the ship's treadmill. :rotfl2:

Even though it was hot, it was really fun to run on the island.
Good luck!

You can do it! I'm right about where you are. I turn the big 4-0 in December. Right now I'm running 5 miles at about a 12:30 pace. O signed up for the Princess half about a week after reg opened. I needed the accountability or I was afraid I'd slack off and give up. I'm really excited for the Princess half. It sounds like so much fun.

You're right; I just need to go for it :). I keep reading about submitting times for a better "corral" - are you going to try to run a 10K prior to submit a time or will you just "wing it"? My goal is to just finish and try to average under a 13 minute pace, so I guess I'm not really understanding whether a better spot really makes a difference for me? :confused3 Guess I've got some reading to do :)

You are already halfway there with 5 months to go. Do it! :cheer2:

10 minutes a mile is not good, that's GREAT!!! WTG!

You can definitely do it - I do a combination of jogging and walking and will be doing my first 1/2 on Saturday (Wine and Dine 1/2 marathon). I am very nervous and excited at the same time. I have been sketchy on my training between vacation and school starting have only been able to get in maybe two runs per week and I have been able to maintain right at a 13:50/mile pace for 10 miles. So if I can do it, you can definitely do it :)

And as JCH said, you still have 5 months to go!!!

I finally go to run outside today, yay! The GPS on my phone is still shoddy, but my new watch worked great! My average speed was 4.2 mph dispite it being 85 degrees and 90% humidity, so I feel good about that. I did see, though, that I run a lot faster not on the treadmill. I set the treadmill at 5.0 for running and 3.8 for walking...when not on it, I found myself doing 6.5 and 3.6. Problem being I can't run nearly as long at that speed! The average was still fine, so I am not worried about the 5k this weekend, but for a half, I need to make it manageable. Any tips? Should I just adjust my intervals, or try to slow it down?

When I started, my intervals were 10 sec run/50 sec walk for my first time out. I adjusted my second time out to 20 sec run/40 sec walk and kept progressing until I was comfortable with the right numbers.

Hi gang...I just registered today to run the Princess Half Marathon. I've only been running since October, and only regularly for the past 4 months or so. I run about 3 to 4 times/week and my longest run so far has been about 7.25 miles. I printed out the training schedule and will start Oct. 24 after my Disney Cruise.

I registered without entering a race time since I've never run in a 10K race and only ran a 5K last November. I currently run a 10K in about 1:05. I may try to get in a 10K race beforehand and register that time. I also convinced my sister to run with me.

My DD is a CM at the Boardwalk so we'll probably book a room there.

Good luck with your training everyone.

Welcome fellow South Carolinian!

Thats a GREAT PACE :worship:

Go for it, you have a great pace, you will be with 16000 of your best friends nothing to be afraid of, 13.1 mile of party!!!!!

I also did the CC 5K on a Double-Dip in August. They did time it for us (a CM had a timer and called out times as you finished), but I know she only stayed about 40-45 minutes, so she wasn't there for all the finishers.

The 1st CC day was humid, but cloudy (with some rain sprinkles in the middle) and was great. The 2nd CC day the sun was SO HOT already by 9AM, we didn't run it. I did get LOTS of bug bites, so I recommend bug spray! (I think sweaty people must taste yummier!)

I am hoping to do a 10K sometime by December. As of right now I put that I planned to finish in 2:45. Although I just calculatd my pace for my 5 mile run and it was actually an average of 14:04, not 12:30 . I just ordered a garmin watch. Hopefully that will help me pace myself better. I would love to run the Princess at a 13 mm.

I have a quick question!

I emailed my recent 10K race time for corral placement since I did not state anything when I registered. Should I expect a response back or just assume that received the info? Just hoping I'm not going to have to spend extra time at the expo getting things changed if I need to.

Somebody posted instructions on how to use the professional photos on Facebook without actually buying them and now I can't find them.

Hey All,
I just want to double check that if I register without a corral time that I will just be put in with the larger crowd. I won't really have a time - or should I just make a guess of it?

I submitted my time last week via email and I got a response saying it was entered. It took about 4-5 days before I got a response.

Corral question: My understanding is 2:45 is the "fastest" corral you can get into without a time submitted-- if you say you estimate a 2:45 finish, will you for sure get into the 2:45 corral?

A 2:45 finish would be 12:35 per mile, which is definitely around our target time, as we are currently training 12 mm.
