For those who don't use a Garmin....can anyone rec. a good Android app that tracks pace while running? I've been using CardioTrainer and I have really liked it, except that the pacing while I'm running is very all over the place. It calcs accurately when I'm all done, but I'm really trying to stick to a consistent pace. It will tell me I'm running at 8:05 (ummm, prob. not!) and when I slow down a hair, it will jump to 10:30 or 11:00! Any suggestions appreciated. :cool1:

Thanks for your input Jeremy - I am following Galloway's training schedule, and I have his 1/2 marathon book - according to his chart, I should do a 1/1 interval for a 13:30-15:30 mile - that seems like alot of starting and stopping, but maybe I should listen to the expert and give it a try next week on my long run.

As far as being a lot of starting and stopping, it is but it isn't. I know Jeff does 30/30 in most of his races now. I tried that ones and that's a lot of starting and stopping. I probably wasn't ready for it yet. I was faster in that test run but I didn't get as good of a recovery during a 30sec walk break as I would have liked. Just experiment with the walk/run ratio to try and find that balance between walking and running.

You might be interested in knowing Jeff Galloway is doing a podcast this spring and summer at http://www.thegallowayextramile.com/ . Last summer he was on several of the extra mile experimental. There a group of their runners tried out the Galloway method in training for the Chicago Marathon.

I have been training with an official Galloway group since May of last year.

I was in either the 12mm or the 13mm last year. 13mm does a 1:1 pace and I love it. I tell myself, I can do anything for a minute, right?

I find that both my run and my walk pace are faster with 1:1s or 2:1s (run 2, walk 1), plus I can maintain it for a WAY longer distance.

I use RunKeeper. It seems to work pretty well?

However, I think all GPS based devices (including Garmin) need a second or two to catch up on pace.

Aw, I hope you feel better soon, and best of luck with the DL Half! And how much was the engraving? I'm starting to figure out my Disney budget. Yikes. ;)
Thanks!

Engraving was only $20...they engrave your name and time while you wait. I think I only waited a total of 10 or 15 minutes at the most including standing in line for my turn.

Hope you don't mind me joining in - I'm in the UK & looking forward to the Princess Half next year as part of our family holiday - my 3 kids will be running the kids races & I can't wait! :cheer2:
I ran the Up & Away 5K in 2010 & soooo wanted to be a princess this year but needed another year to save up as also hoping to do coast to coast if I can convince DH - but will leave the kids at home for that one!
I've run 3 half marathons one in september (2 hours 16), one in november (2 hours 5) and one on sunday 27th feb (2 hours 12) at roughly the same time as the princess half! princess:

Welcome! You will love the princess.

I use endomondo. I don't usually keep track of my pace on the screen since I keep my phone in an arm band. I really like that every mile it stops my music and tells me the time I ran my last mile in, my total time, and how many miles I've run. Since I use my phone to play my music as well it's really convenient for me!

I've got runkeeper (got it while it was free), and it's hit or miss...at least on my phone. Sometimes it works fine. Other times it freezes and I finish an hour run only to see it saying "5 minutes" or some random extremely low number. Granted, I haven't tried it since they did an update...and it could be my phone. But so far I haven't been impressed with runkeeper and am still saving up for a Garmin with GPS.

I am currently running about 45 minutes (3.1 miles) 3 days a week and my longer run on Sunday - do you do the intervals only on your long run day or do you do intervals on all runs.

Good Evening Princesses, I hope you don't mind a Prince storming the castle. I'm not doing the 2012 princesses, but I lurk on here from time to time because you have such good information.

Welcome!

Just make sure you have that little bump in the back of your head that helps them stay on properly. My sister and I are missing them - at the Marathon weekend expo we tried on some "guaranteed to stay on headbands" (don't remember if it was at the Bondi booth) and they slid right off. I can wear them, but I have to pin them on with so many bobby-pins it's not worth it. Ponytail and cap for me.

I wondered why my headbands moved up in the back too. I thought it was my silky hair, but I don't have a bone bump in the back of my head either. lol

I found a cheap dimestore Goody headband with rubbery things on it. It is 1/2" and hasn't moved yet. I love SaySay's website. I might order! ...http://www.sweatybands.com/

My dh wants me to run the martian marathon this weekend. I haven't run since the princess, so I don't know. Sounds like I would get an injury.

What do you think?

Also, he erased all of my bookmarks yesterday by switching over to Google chrome and deleted firefox. I am so mad. Obviously, he wasn't thinking.

I do intervals on all of my runs - I do two 3 miles and 1 long run per week. I usually up the intervals on short runs to 2:1 or 3:1 as I can, and stick to whatever interval goes with my current pace for the long runs.

Thanks!

Wow $20 isn't too bad for something Disney related. ;) I will have to make a mental note of this... as well as checking for tears

:rotfl: I was surprised at the cost too...the company that does it is Fond Memories Graphics...they also set up at the Expo to sell their commemorative shadow box things...now THOSE are expensive! You can buy them at their engraving booth too, after the race in case you regret not ordering one at the expo. They are pretty nice though...my dad insisted on getting one for me when he saw them at the engraving station...finally got it last week, so now I have to order a pic to put in it, and find a place to display it  I also ordered one from them for the Houston Marathon that my BF ran in Jan (his first)...looked really nice.

I ordered a framed commemorative last week from LastingCommemoratives.com

I will get a copy of my bib, a picture of the castle, my stats, and place for a picture. I also comes with another medal!! I cost about 175.00.

The cool thing was, they do other races too! I was able to see the Disneyland Princess medal and the coast to coast medal. They were selling the trio framed. Looked awesome. Also saw my last years Detroit marathon framed pic in there. Couldn't afford two 175.00's!!! lol

I would like to get some kind of clear box to put my medals in so they don't get dirty.

I remember seeing them at the expo too, I think...I know there were a couple of different companies. I recently ordered a hanger for my medals from http://www.alliedmedaldisplays.com and I really like it...a nice way to display the medals but not take up too much space. I ordered the tiara one, but they have several others that I liked...they were very nice to work with as well.

My parents surprised me with one of the framed commemoratives from the Disneyland Half Marathon and it is absolutely beautiful. I had a good picture of me in front of the DL castle, a medal, and another (non crumbled) bib. It's a nice momento from my first race.

We aren't getting one for the Princess Half because I'm already signed up for the Disneyland (and Coast to Coast) so I'm pretty sure we'll get one after that.

I do intervals all the time. I figured it was easier on the joints and I like walk breaks, there I said it! I was getting faster too....so it works.

As for sweatybands, they are kind of expensive I think, but I do really like mine for keeping the hairs back. Of course there isn't a work all for everyone, so give it a try.

Another sweat band to try is the Hippie Runner band (www.hippierunner.com)...I found them at the Houston Marathon Expo and they are my favorite so far. I like Bondi bands ok, but I think they are a little wide for me....I LOVE the look of the sweaty bands and there are soooo many cute choices, but they pop off my head in 5 minutes. I don't know if I just have a big head or what, but they just don't work for me. The ones I bought at the Hippie Runner booth seem to work perfect for me and I love the fabric they use...and they had tons of fun and colorful prints. The best thing to do, if you can, is find a nearby expo to visit and try some out...if not, you could order a few from different places to see what fits you best...just make sure they allow returns!

I love all the designs for Sweatybands, but my tried and true and only one I wear is their American flag design.
