Question for you guys:

I'm straying a little bit from the Princess training plan due to the 10k I have on the 12th. I did a 6 mile run on Friday..so how many miles do you think I should do for my long run this week?

here's a good article on runner's world re: taper...

http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244--14073-2-1-2,00.html

you don't need much for a 10k, 7-10 days. i'm not sure what your weekly mileage looks like, but i would do a long run that is still considered "long" to you, but the distance is fairly comfortable to you. good luck!

Thank you so much for the article! :)

It's not a very long distance, but since my usual runs are between 2.5-3 miles, anything 4+ is long for me.

When I ran my first 10k last summer I had a 5k race the weekend before, so that served as my last long run/ taper. A lot of people like to run the week of races, just a couple short runs, but I take a break and find that I run stronger on well rested legs. Of course what works for me doesn't work for everyone. It's important to figure out what works for you.

My beautiful community is destroy. The snow storm destroy all the pretty trees. My street is looking awful. I dont have electricity since Saturday and no heat. I lost all my groceries. We tried to escape but our street was closed up by falling trees. Is awful! :sad1: We almost lost half of our house because of a tree. Im so sad, because I love to run around my communities and love the trees and now is going to take a log time to recover. Plus for the last three days I havent fallowed my diet because Im staying at a friend's house and I dont want to be picky with the food. I will just tired to train at the gym until this get better. Hope everyone have a good run this week.

How cool! I think the Silver Comet was a good one for first-timers - not legions of people and it was relatively low-key. But, yes, I don't know that I would do it again - the trail is just too skinny and it was frustrating trying to get around pairs of runners.

Good gracious - you're on a streak! I would love to do the ATL half, too, but the budget won't support 2 within a month. That's the "be careful what you wish for" about running - after I started doing races, my DH and oldest DS wanted to get into it, too. That's great and fun, but now those $20-25 a race fees are starting to morph into $75 for 30-60 minutes of family togetherness!!! But I do really want to encourage my son - he's very athletic and I think this is something he and I could do together. It would be nice to have something in common and a way to spend time together as we are facing the obnoxious "tween" years (he's almost 10)!

I definitely understand. These are all a lot more affordable than Disney but they do add up too! I just have a bucket list goal that requires me to finish 29 more Half or Full (total not each ) Marathons by August. So, I am registering for races that I was never interested in before. I am not thrilled about the very hilly Half Marathon course for Thanksgiving. But, the trade-off is that it is acceptable not to eat a lot afterwards! :rotfl:

Not sure about Zooma...but will go for it just to check another Half off the list.

had my "long" run yesterday for 2 miles according to the princess training guide and did it in 25 min. So I averaged 12:30 a mile. I know it's not as good as many of you and we will see what happens this weekend with 5 miles...

That sounds like a great pace to me. I wish that was my pace. Right now I'm between 15:00 and 16:00 a mile. :)

Julie princess:

Hi Everyone. This will be my first half marathon....and I am so scared!! I have been overweight and out of shape for many years, and have been on weight watchers since March. I have lost 40 pounds so far. I am a huge Disney fan and this half marathon is one of my incentives to continue my journey for better health. I have never been a runner so this is very new to me. I have someone coaching me on a training plan and I am slowly jogging more and more.

I am **VERY** nervous about the race. It seems like almost an impossible dream considering I am not a runner. However, I have come a long way since March, and I am doing and feeling much better than before I lost my weight. I just pray I can do it, and that I haven't taken on too big of a challenge.

I wanted to join the thread to get some insight from other participants. I apologize I haven't had time to read this full thread as it is HUGE. I am hoping that it is possible to walk/jog this and not have to jog/run the entire distance. I am sure it is answered somewhere in here, but if not, can anyone give me advice about walking/jogging?

Good luck to everyone training! :goodvibes

It is so normal to be nervous!! I am done with race 6 now and yet I am always so nervous before a race. Most of us here are not runners, but like you had the idea to challenge ourselves and a Half Marathon, etc. went on the list. Congratulations on your weight loss! Most of us do the Jeff Galloway Interval programs. My personal interval system is 30 seconds running/30 seconds walking. For me, it allows me enough rest, yet challenges me for a bit too but not where I am exhausted. I improved 30 minutes following it. Just train at a 15 minute pace so that you have a buffer.

As far as pace...many of us may be fast but as long as you are at a 15 min. pace, you are good to go!! You will find that there are plenty to support you during a race to help you get to that finish line. Just get to the 10 mile mark with your training. Whether it is walking the entire 15 min. pace or doing intervals, there are many of us that are more than happy to help you along.

You will finish!! Good Luck with your training and Congratulations on your accomplishment of losing a lot of weight and living healthier!! :goodvibes

Woo hoo great pace....I'm really hoping to actually get in my 5 miles this weekend OUTSIDE....the treadmill and I are at odds with each other...I can't wait to hear how yours goes :)

You are doing great! between 15 and 16 will keep you ahead of the sweepers and there is plenty of time to go till the race, I predict you will do great!

Yea you!!!! I'm so happy for you with the weight loss (I did that a few years ago...keep plugging along) and for the half marathon goal (I did my first at the Wine and Dine one month ago today. I never thought it would happen but I think I caught the running bug. I'm not fast, but I like tracking my results and looking for any sign of improvement....I think you are doing great!

For your 30/30 intervals, how long is an average mile for you?

I've been doing 1:30/30 intervals for about 2 months now and like them, but I'm up for changing it up.

Ankle is finally "healed" up. After my ankle gave out the 2nd week of training it kept getting better then worse. I think though I've finally got a good supportive brace and I just took this past week off totally and it seems to have really helped. Except now I feel really behind and I'm hoping I can catch up. SIL and I are doing a 10K on the 19th and I am hoping for a decent time.
Ran today really slow just to make sure it didn't give out again and it's feeling fine. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Great job with all the weight loss! I'm nervous as well because I am not a runner and never have been but I'm trying to accomplish a bunch of stuff before we have another baby. Everyone has been so supportive here and they are full of great tips. :goodvibes

I was so nervous last summer after I signed up to run princess this year. I had nightmares about over sleeping and missing the start, getting lost on the course, and being told the sweepers were coming and not being able to move my legs to start running. I had them all the time at first, but once my training started to progress they kind of died off.

Around 12 min. if I am taking it easy, 10 min. if I gun it during the running segments.

Hi All! I love all the inspirational stories! I just found out that the 10K I was hoping to run on Sunday may or may not go off, due to damage (and lack of power) in the town from the freak winter storm. It's only 30 min away, but the snowfall was much worse in Lexington vs Brookline. I really want to try 1) a real race and 2) to get a 10K time to submit!

The HS (outdoor) track is somewhat lit at night, so we've been able to get in some track workouts there even after work. (I don't know how you all run on the track or even the treadmill regularly-- I start to lose count of laps after just a couple!) Daylight savings time is going to be a killer, though.

I had one of those last week, but my training's been going on since June. I hadn't missed the start, but the course itself was only in the Magic Kingdom, the MK was about 5x its real size, and all of sudden I was passed by the sweepers. I know it's just a dream but I would like those to not happen again

I do run on the treadmill, on a track and on the sidewalks.
When I run on the track (if I don't bring my Garmon watch) I make tally marks in the dirt to keep track of how many laps I've done.
Then I don't have to worry about remembering (because I woudn't!). :rotfl:

Everyone is going to do great at the Princess!
It is such a fun run to do.
Keep up the good work training!!!

Course maps are now posted for the Princess Half, Family 5k, and kid's races 1-mile run:

http://espnwwos.disney.go.com/events/rundisney/princess-half-marathon/index?page=course

The half map is pretty vague, no mile markers or aid stations marked, but it appears to be identical with the course they have used in the past for most recent half marathons at WDW.

Here are a couple of better maps:

Epcot based 5k - http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/fullscreen/37052596/
Half Course - http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/fullscreen/4106815/

Wow, so glad I went to the PDF file of the race program and printed off that map. I do not like the new maps at all. I didn't think there anything wrong with the old ones :confused3
