Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

I wouldn't worry too much about your pace while you're training. You want your training pace to be slower so you don't put yourself at too much of a risk for injury. My training pace is always slower than what I can do in a race situation. At least for 5k's, when I try to run that distance all out while training I can always go faster in a race. There's just something about the race excitement and the energy from the other runners that helps you do things you never thought you could :rotfl:

Thanks for the encouragement! Could I use this same mentality to say that it's ok if my longest training run before the half is only 9 miles? I'm not sure if I can bring myself to run any more than that this month...but I'm afraid those last 4 miles might kill me for the half cause I won't be prepared enough.

I've only used runkeeper a couple of times and its been pretty off whenever I use it. My Garmin watch is much better at tracking my route and pace. When I've used both my garmin will say I've gone 5 miles while the runkeeper app will say 5.5 or even 6 :sad2: I've heard the gps on my phone could have interference from the case I use so maybe that's it? The app's inaccuracy is why I don't carry my phone with me too often but I would love if it worked right.

I just ordered a SpiBelt from runningwarehouse.com and I can't wait to try it out for holding my iPhone! At least then I'll have my phone with me if I need it for some reason. I've thought about getting an arm band to carry my phone too, that way I can use it as an iPod while on runs.

Only 2 long runs left for DH and I. The plan is to run 2.5 hours this weekend and next weekend which should be about 13 miles each run. Then we have a 10k race on 9/18 to hopefully give us a good qualifying time and move us up a corral (or two :goodvibes) for the half. I'm feeling like we're really ready for this :thumbsup2

For me, my garmin says I go further than runkeeper does. The pace is pretty close. The other day, runkeeper said I had gone 2 miles when in reality I might have ran 1/2 a mile :confused3

I wear a belt on my runs too. It holds my water, iphone, and whatever food I'm taking with me.

Thanks everyone on the feedback about pace on race day. My original goal was simply to finish in the time given. Somewhere along the way under 3 hours became the goal. Ultimately I know I'll be happy whenever I cross the finish line. A year ago, I would never had thought I would be able to do this under any circumstance

With respect to pacing, just a little perspective. My best half marathon is about 40 seconds per mile faster than my "good" long training runs. Alot of long training runs are off by more than that. Racing just does something to you. It is almost impossible to simulate the race feel in training.

About the only time I run better than my half marathon race pace is when I run intervals or shorter tempo runs. Those are faster, but that is really the only time I am faster.

Depending on your goal, if you are running for a time, these stretches on Osceola Parkway are the best. It is there that you can run "faster" stretches. The parks, while alot more fun, will be slower.

It's kind of a bummer we aren't running through Epcot at all... It's by far my favorite park. DW has mentioned she loved running through World Showcase during the January events.

I wish the course had less Osceola Parkway, more Epcot. Two ~3 mile stretches of boring road are definitely going to drag compared to running in the parks, no matter how much entertainment, etc they have out there for us.

I have to agree with Frank - the World Showcase prominade isn't THAT wide and RunDisney is smart to not have runners and spectators together at night time with wine involved. :)

Remember that we are running through the Boardwalk, which is right next to the International Gateway into EPCOT so any of anyone's individual cheering section could support their runner there, and then beat said runner into the park for the party. That's what I am going to suggest to my honey for a photo op and a chance for a hug. It's nearly the end of the race, but that's OK. I figure he can text me words of encouragement a few times prior to that if he wants. I probably won't want any other distractions during the main meaty section of the race anyway.

Chlorofiend - aren't you a runkeeper user? Why aren't we street team members? :)

Yup, I definitely understand the reasons...although the park will be closed an hour(iirc) before the gun goes off and Disney's never had any issue with parade crown control...they could easily do the same for the marathon (and do, for the DHS/Epcot Segments of the full, which take place during park hours).

As for as why we're not street team members, I have no idea. :)

Do those of you that use Runkeeper notice it ever being off? Saying you either ran faster or longer than you know you did?

I've seen a few complaints (primarily from iPhone users) that the GPS has issues keeping lock and misreporting distance/time/pace. If you run in dense urban areas (where buildings may block satellite line-of-sight), that could also cause issues. I haven't seen any major/noticeable discrepancies in my runs.

Valid point. I'm just trying to cross the finish line. :)

Chlorofiend - that was my sly way of inviting you to be my street team member. I was runninng solo for the longest time but then Sam invited me to his street team (made up of other folks running the W&D half) and then I got to looking at who else is listed as running that race on runkeeper and I thought I saw your username but now I can't it. So it you want to become street team members with me (and then Sam, Blue Runner, etc....) you could just post your runkeeper profile HTML link here. Unless you want to continue running solo, which is also cool.

Sam - LOL. Bag in a bag in a bag for wet clothes. A good thought. I am always dripping (and I mean DRIPPING) when I get home from my runs. I seriously have to wash my running gear after EVERY SINGLE RUN otherwise it won't be dry the next time. Some of ya'll might be wondering why I wouldn't wash my stinky clothes after every time anyway, but we all know that if we can get away with wearing something more than once, we will. :)

BTW, my runner # is 3044. I used a 10K run as proof of time that showed I averaged about 10.5 minutes per mile, but maybe they ignored it? :confused3 It seems like a high number but I am by no means an elite runner and while my dream goal is to finish in 2 1/2 hours, I'll be happy if I finish anytime under 3, so I guess I don't really care too much.

32 days away! Which for me translates into 16 more runs if I am good, which is only another 115ish more miles of training!! Which is also only another 4 more weekend chances for a longer 10-13 mile runs!!!! ACK!!! :scared1:

When the full marathon goes through Hollywood Studios and Epcot, it is in daylight and I would hazard a guess that most guest are sober and alert. During last year's after party, there were throngs of drunken guests. And restricting up to half of the path around World Showcase would add to the congestion issues that are bound to be present.

I'm not saying I wouldn't like to run through WS at night, I just think it is not feasible with the after party.

I'm #2554 with a 10 min/mile proof of time from my 10K. I estimated a 2:15 finish...but truth be told, I'd be more than happy to finish sub 2:30. My goal is 2:10, but we'll see ;)

I think total race population is 10,000+ (including relays) so that seems pretty close to what i'd expect.

i cant wait till the race begin. Training in hills and the heat is really a killer.

Finally ran the entire 13.1 miles. 2hr28min. For those who take Imodium prior to the race, how far in advance do you take it, do you take 1 or 2 tablets.
Thanks

I totally agree! DH and I planned to run 13 miles as our longest training run so far this morning but the heat here in Detroit killed that idea. With the humidity and temps creeping near 90 we stopped at 11.5 and called it good for the day.

Congrats on the 13.1 miles! Hopefully the weather will cool of a bit for us by next weekend and we can get there too :goodvibes
I take one Imodium tablet about a half hour before any run over 7 miles. It definitely helps!

ran the Indianapolis Womens 5K on Saturday......great race and a really neat course thru downtown, and I got my 1st medal!! but MAN ON MAN it was so unbelieveably hot this weekend!! I thought i was going to pass out, or puke , during the race. I don't know what the temps during the race were, but Indy set a record high of 100 yesterday afternoon, so I'm sure the temps were pretty darn hot during the run....and humid! physically i felt fine, no cramping or stiffness, but the heat was unbearable and I finished 34.56. sucky...BUT 91st out of 397. so I don't think i was the only affected by the heat. I just hope it won't be like that for the wine and dine!!!:scared1:

run2relax: Hello! Welcome to the thread, and a very cool first post. Great time for 13 miles. Tell us a little more about yourself. Also, I have never considered an Imodium but that sounds like a good idea. What specifically do you find that it helps to target? If it helps with cramping in the gut area perhaps I will consider taking one. I do take 2 advils about 30 minutes prior to running, which I find helps my soreness.

29apr00: See, I knew you could do it! Glad you are sticking with running. 34.56 for a 5k is respectable :) Nice job!

Temps have been HOT for Oregon recently. I managed 7.5 miles on Tuesday, about 3 miles on the Treadmill on Thursday, and then did another 7.5 miles today (Sunday) with every intention to keep going on an extension of this route I have planned, but it was just to damn hot. 92 degrees. Ew.

Given my mileage today I don't know if I will try for the extension tomorrow, but since I don't have to work I will probably try to get some additional running in. I hope its not another 90+ day. There's only 3 more weekends left to allow for a long run (with my work schedule). The race looms close! :scared1:

Michelle - how goes it? Haven't heard from you in awhile. Coach, you out there too? Seems like some of the peeps from several pages back have gone silent. I hope everyone on the East Coast is fairing well with the hurricanes! Did anyone on this thread also run the DisneyLand Half today? If so, congrats!

- Carey

Today I completed the Disneyland Half and I had a wonderful time. I also earned my C2C medal. I'm ready and excited for the W&D Half next month.

congrats Ludari!! that's a great acheivement!

yeah, the weather has been wreaking havoc on outside runs!! I"m pretty sure my schedule leaves room for only 1 more outdoor run! :scared1: i'm glad i'm only doing the 1st half of the relay, because i've only been able to make it up to 5.5miles so far. :rolleyes1 i really think our plan of 0 to 1/2 marathon in 5 months was a bit unrealistic. :rotfl:

anyone know when they will have the corral assignments? Cannot believe we are less than a month away now!
I am a little worried. I have not run consistently in almost a month now. I went on vacation for 2 weeks and now I am battling bronchitis. It is killing me to not be out there running, but I know I could do more damage trying to run before my lungs have healed.

Congratulations, Ludari!! :worship: I would love to do C2C some day!

29apr00 - you can do it! I started in spring this year and ran my first half yeserday :cheer2: Are you planning at least 1 long run before the race?

My goal was to finish in the time allotted - 4 hours and I finished in less than 3! I hadn't run more than 10 miles prior to the race. I actually felt really good except my feet were KILLING me from mile 10-13. I maintained a 12:15 pace for the first 5 miles, but lost steam and ended averaging 13:13.

I'm currently using Asics Gel Fortitude 4. Does anyone have any advice? Inserts? I just bought these shoes 4 months ago, so I can't imagine I've worn them out yet.

Only 4 weeks to go! :dance3:

For the Princess Half I went to the expo first thing in the morning, there was a line up and it seemed pretty busy but I saw the Fairy Godmother open the expo and got pixie dust on us, DD thought that was cool.

For the Wine & Dine I wanted to go o DHS first, LOL....go rope drop to ride Toy Store, Rock & Roll RollerCoaster and Tower of Terror :rolleyes1 and then thinking of going to the Expo mid afternoon. Has anyone been mid afternoon? Is it fairly busy? Will I miss anything not going when it first opens?

Thanks :)
