Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

b) It will be pink. Hot pink. Neon Pink. Blazing Pink! Ok, not that pink, but a noticeable pink.

OK, now a COMPLETELY different question - I read somewhere from someone who ran some other Disney race that you could shed your outer clothing (say, a warm but unwanted sweatshirt) just prior to the race and leave it in your corral and Disney donates all those clothes to charity. And I don't mean they 'clean up' after the idiots that decide to strip down and have no place to put clothes and don't care - I mean that Disney specifically encourages shedding your outer clothes because they LIKE to donate and this is a fun little way to do it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Am I talking crazy or is there some truth to this? I ask because if I am nervous (which I anticipate), and thus get the shivers (which I also anticipate), I could combat this by wearing a sweatshirt just prior to the race which I then remove and toss into the ether never to be seen again (i.e. donate it), OR I work out some way to wear a jacket or something that I actually like and IF I shed it, am then able to get it back later. Does this make sense? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

- Carey

Hot Pink would be a-okay with me......:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

As for discarding clothes, I highly doubt you will be chilly before the Wine and Dine. The evening in October in WDW might be cool if you lived in the Sahara.
Any clothing and all tossed on the side will be picked up by VoluntEars and donated to a local charity organization.

Unless you are anemic I don't think being cold before the W&D is an issue. Any clothes you shed will be scooped up and donated. If you want to keep it you'll have to either give it to someone who is a spectator and with you or get it into your packet.

I just checked this morning and the race is already 87% full!! I still haven't decided if I can be ready for this race...and I realized this morning that I need to decide soon. I booked my accomodations last year, in anticipation of running the race and enjoying the first weekend of F&W. I ran my first 5k last year during F&W race weekend and decided then that I wanted to do the half this year. My training so far has me up to running 6 - 7 miles...which is a HUGE accomplisment for me, but still so F-A-R from 13.1. I am not fast, I am a true slogger at best, averaging between 11:40 - 12:30/miles depending on how many walk breaks I take (and that is on a flat track). My biggest fear is spending all that money on airfare, hotel stay and race registration to only get picked up by the sweepers and not finish the race. I looked at the race results from last year, and the last female on the finisher's list averaged close to 18min/mile (which is over the 16min/mile limit)...I don't care if I come in last, I just want to finish! Any words of wisdon from race veterans out there?

Hey, your pace isn't that slow! I average out most of the time at around an 11:30 pace (run/walk) and was able to finish the Princess in 2:32, so you can do it! I think if you're at 6-7 miles now, you can be ready for the W&D...you just need to get on a "plan" asap and stick to it. Right now, I'm in the 6th week of a 16 week plan for the DL half and my long run is at 7 miles...and that race is a month before the W&D, so I think there is still time for you to be ready if you want to make the commitment. Plopping down the $$ on the registration, airfare, and hotel can be a good motivator :) If you're super concerned with not finishing, register ASAP for a local 10k that is certified that you can get an official time for...if your finish time predicts you to finish a half in less than 2:45, you can turn it in as "proof of time" to Disney for a better corral placement at the W&D and that will give your pace some cushion since the 16 minute pace minimum starts when the last person crosses the start line.

Thank you for the vote of confidence Cripey! However, finishing in under 2:45 is a dream, lol! I'm hoping to make it under 3:30...heck, let's be honest, I'm just hoping to make it across the finish line on my own feet! I'm ok with that though. I guess even if I'm in the LAST corral, if I get to the front of it, I'll be ok...maybe! :confused3

I was in your boat last year. I had the nervous jitters right up to the start line. Your faster than I was at this point last year. Heck you may still be faster than me. I finished in 3:17. Not super. Not fast. But I FINISHED. You will too, if you keep to your training.

Whenever I get a little down about not being 'fast', I remind myself of the WISH mantra:

"DLF>DNF>>DNS"
Dead Last Finish is greater than Did Not Finish which is significantly greater than Did Not Start

I'd still consider trying a 10K...at the pace you are at now, I think you could still get a decent time for corral placement. I was surprised at the generous time prediction I got...I turned in a 1:07 10K time for the Princess and they sent that back to me as a 2:15 half marathon prediciton...which got me in Corral B for that race. I was a little intimidated :) And remember, if you really push on a 10k and get a great "predicted" time, that doesn't necessarily mean you HAVE to push that hard at the half to actaully get that time! And don't underestimate the power of the adrenaline rush on race day too when making your decision. I swear I barely ever felt winded through the entire race...and that's not a normal thing for me! (and I only went up to 11 miles in training so race day was my first day for 13.1!) I was soooo pumped just to be there and doing it that I didn't notice muscle fatigue or heavy breathing...the whole thing was like a blur and over so quick! It felt great!

After lurking and dreaming I could do this race, I'm happy to say I'm registered!! Thanks to my awesome hubby and those great Southwest fares from the other day, I can take another trip to WDW and do this race too!

I've got to get planning since I've never been in the fall before and have the Food & Wine Festival to see too.

I'm not sure how to prepare for the race weather though. It's very dry where I live. The humidity in Jan for the Goofy is enough for me. So this may be even more difficult. Any advice on how to prepare? How about staying hydrated? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a walker, by the way. Hope it's okay if I post here too. My average is 3 hours for the 1/2. My goal is to get in under 3. So far I haven't beat 3:00:11, makes you wonder what I was doing for those 11 seconds huh? :confused3

LOL!! :rotfl: Welcome!

I can't help with the training, but would love to hear what other's have to say. We live in Denver so humidity is not something that we are used to!

On the subject of training for a humid Orlando fall race where there's no humidy: I did that last year. In 2010, I lived in Edmonton, Alberta. The summer of 2010 was one of Alberta's coldest summers. Made my training a little easier...I was running in tights and long sleeved shirts or a jacket in late August and September! There was frost on the ground most mornings when I went out to run in September. I was panicked about running in the Florida humidity.

I got down there and had a week to acclimate. The humidity was high. But the weather changed just a bit on the Friday before the race, making the weekend just a bit drier. I was able to run the W&D. I ran it a bit slower than I wanted to. I also forced myself to stop at EVERY water table in the race. I never drink that much while training, but I knew my body would need it down there. I was really happy with my finish and how well I actually executed the race.

So my suggestion is to train the best you can and hope for a mild weekend of weather in Orlando in early October. Hydrate as much as possible, before, during, and after. I'm not sure there's much more you can do. I can tell you from experience, worrying about it doesn't help at all.

BTW - As you can see, I've recently moved. I'll be well acclimated and trained for the W&D this year!

Good point, worrying isn't going to help. I think being able to have a day or two to acclimate will help me some. I never really thought about that before. But two weeks ago I went back home to MD and it was hot and humid while I was there. I noticed it for the first day or so but after that it didn't bother me as much. I wasn't doing my walks there but if I knew I was doing this race then, I would have!

I think for me staying hydrated will be key. I'll think about taking a fuel belt for this 1/2 I think. Just to be safe.

Obviously one cannot do much about the weather. Though you can adjust. If you have been training where the feel real temps have been below 70 for a while, then you will have to adjust some at the race. You should understand through training this summer what your hot temp pace is and start off a little slower at the W&D. Last year the feel real temp was in the 80's so it would have been appropriate to knock 30-60 seconds a mile off the pace.

You are doing awesome @ 11:40 - 12:30/mile, especially if you are already up to 7 miles. You have plenty of time to get up to 13 miles in my opinion. I am WAY behind you and am still hopeful to train for a 13 mile run, even if I have to "will" myself the last 3 miles ;) You can do it!

I am with you, I don't care if I come in last, I just want to finish.

I am personally starting to have a panic attack. I ran a race last Sunday and then pulled a hamstring on Tuesday and ended up walking most of my 3 1/2 mile "run". I took the rest of the week off to nurse the hamstring so now I am REALLY behind in my training schedule. With only 12 weeks to go, I wonder if I can get from 4 miles to 13 miles.

Being old and out of shape really stinks ;)

Don't give up! I know having an injury is hard, I am battling PF, but you can still do this.

I'd love to see what everyone's training plans are, especially how your long runs are planned out. My plan is to run 3 days/week (2 short, 1 long) and bike 2 days/week. I just started back up two weeks ago after being off for a month, so that's why my first several "long" runs are actually short.

Here they are (I put them all on Saturday's to keep it simple):

14) June 25: 2 (done!)
13) July 2: 3
12) July 9: 3
11) July 16: 4
10) July 23: 4
9) July 30: 5
8) Aug 6: 6
7) Aug 13: 7

5) Aug 27: 9
4) Sep 3: 10
3) Sep 10: 11
2) Sep 17: 12

I am with you Dagny. All you can do is keep going at the speed you are comfortable with and I think (hope) the energy will get you through. I am not at 7 miles yet either...more like 3...but I am determined to do it. You'll make it!

rundisneymom - I think you have lots of time too. I wish I was at 7 miles already :worship: Everyone here will support you. Go for it. The thing I keep telling myself is I won't regret trying on October 2, but I would regret not trying.

liznboys - what are your short runs? I am doing 3 days a week but am doing less than you. 30 minutes 2 x's a week and then the long run. I am a new runner though...

:goodvibes Michele

I have been running 5Ks pretty steadily since May and will run my first 8K on July 4th. I am hopeful that to run a 10K in July as well. I put together a spreadsheet and have a plan to run 1 mile longer than the week before and increasing the shorter runs as well as I gain stamina. We are signed up to run longer races locally (10K, 15K, etc.) I figure if I pay for them, then I will keep on schedule :)

Our family is going to Europe for 17 days in August so I am REALLY going to have to force myself to run while on vacation - the good news is that it will be 70 degrees and the scenery is going to be new and exciting - hopefully that will be enough to keep me motivated. Not running those 17 days will be very detrimental to say the east.

My husband, who is a huge inspiration to me, says that the stamina will "just come" at some point and when it does you can just run forever.... lets hope he is right ;)

I hope it is ok if I join your thread! :)

I will be running the wine and dine with my sister and 2 of my best friends. I am a TRUE beginning runner..... just started running in March with the C25K program and then transitioned over to Jeff Galloway's beginning runner's program. I did 5 VERY SLOW miles on Friday morning..... I do the walk/run thing, and it involves quite a few hills (which are mentally very tough for me.) I was just under 14 minutes a mile ( I said it was slow :rolleyes1) I would love to take at least a minute off of that time by October, but truly my goal is to finish.

We are staying at POFQ. We will fly down on Friday, and hang around the hotel all day Saturday. We got park hoppers to use on Sun, Mon. and Tues. We fly back home on Wednesday.

Looking forward to getting to know you all! :woohoo:
