Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

I have been running a long time, mostly in the past as conditioning for ice hockey, and once I finished college, I stopped playing hockey and took up running to stay healthy and in shape and I was naturally faster cause i have been doing it awhile. I started running with a half at 9 minute mile with little training. I did long distance track events for a year, so I have always been active, so I guess it just comes to me, i ran the mile in school around 6 minutes every year, its just I want to improve my long distance times. However, everyone has their own pace and goals and should follow their own and not be discouraged cause someone is faster. It is amazing in the fact that you are training, running or walking a half marathon and hopefully without any issues, finishing. That's something one should always be proud of, it is 13 more consecutive miles than your friends attempted or completed. It doesnt matter about the time, just the fact you can say you tried or finished.

I was going to answer the how long question as about 1:18 for the half :rotfl2:

In all seriousness this is a great post and one that we all should keep in mind. I have run half marathons from just under 2:02 all the way up to a 3:22. It's all a matter of genetics, effort, being in tune with the body, training level, weather and health. There is a lot to be said for folks who are 'maximizing the value of the entry'. Often the lantern rouge end of the race has limited water/aid, fewer spectators and a worn out set of volunteers. You can almost hear the clatter of the temporary fencing being disassembled behind you. I am one who will come back around and yell for you after completing my run.

Anyway, remember one person's fast is another's slow and visa-versa.

Hey just a general running question.
After my run yesterday I noticed that my side leg muscles were tight, and today they are sore. Are the any stretches/exercise that can help me strengthen these? Also do you have suggestions on how to make this pain go away so I can continue training?

Think s-t-r-e-c-t-h-i-n-g.

Stretching is often over looked due to our busy lives. Here is a great link for a bunch of stretches that your can do post run.

I do not do all these all the time but will rotate some in and out depending on what is getting tight.

You really should focus on 1,2,3,5,7,8,9. 9, the IT band stretch sounds a lot like what will assist in the immediate issue.

I am so glad that there other slow people running. I put down a 3:00:00 time because I didn't have any type times to summit. My goal is just to finish.

I think a meeting up before for last minute encouragement is a great idea.

I just finished 4 miles in the Florida heat. So far its my longest run and I averaged 14 min mile. My goal is to be under 3 hours by the 1/2. That's what I put for my time on the registration.

Thanks so much for the site. It totally helped losen those muscles that were so tight. I am always stretching, but apparently not the right way.

Just want to add that starting with the Marathon in January, ASI photographers have started to be with characters, also. Not all, but they were there. I would still plan on bringing your own camera just in case they are not with characters for the W&D.

I would also assume you have to purchase the photos that are taken by ASI just as you would race photos while the ones on your own camera are free.

Getting back to the heat question earlier, I lost 3 minutes because of the heat and humidity last year. I ran a 1:27:17 on September 12th but could only manage a 1:29:38 at the W&D less then a month later. I spoke to the overall female winner and she was also about 3 minutes slower then normal. Even with training through the summer by the time October rolls around the temps start to drop and you start to get used to running in the cooler temps and, especially, the lower humidity. It was the humidity that caused me problems. Well, the humidity and all the turns inside DHS. It made it hard to keep your pace up with so many changes in direction.

Has anyone compared last year's race route with this year's? I'm having a hard time figuring out the difference from finishing in Epcot's front parking lot, and how it affects (if at all) the route through DHS. Anyone analyized it yet?

It's hard to say for certain given the granularity of the maps but the race now finishes parking lot FRONT side of Epcot. They took the miles from Backstage AK.

Here is my guess

Hey everyone!
Just a few quick question:
(1) What are your 1 or 2 items you never leave the house without when you go for your run?
(2) What are your favorite types of running clothing?
(3) Any good suggestions for socks?
(4) Where do you purchase your running gear?

Amanda

Hi
I have been lurking for quite some time now, but now it’s time to say hello.

It's my first ½ marathon. I always wanted to do one, but have never been able to.

This has been a rough year for me. I had a miscarriage in early February after finally getting pregnant after trying for almost 4 years, so I signed up for this run to focus on something else that all the sadness.

I come from Denmark in Europe, so it a long way to go. But I'm really excited that my first ½ marathon will be at Disney World.

I don't get to train as much as I like but I'm getting there. This Tuesday I did a 10 k and finished in 59.57. I'm really proud because the other 2 10 k's I did this year (the latest an May 24) I finished in 1.07. something.

Do any of you know what proof of time you need to have to be in coral A or B? I hope to get in an early coral, so I have more time to finish.

Lot’s opinions on many of these questions for sure – all have merit since clothing is really a personal choice. But…

(1) Garmin – it’s my barometer letting me know pace, distance and heart rate. Though on occasion I do run without it so really it is my number 2. I NEVER EVER leave for a run, bike or swim without my RoadID. It saved my life one morning on a business trip. I was hit by a hit and run driver. I ended up on the ground and the reflective band caught the eye of the next driver. All I know was I saw bumper. Beyond that, if you ever need assistance and cannot speak for yourself, it will.
(2) All my clothing is tech fabric. The only brand I swear by is CW-x – I wear their compression clothing on the bottom.
(3) Again tech fabric. For most runners, a thinner tech fabric sock works well. Most wrap securely around the arch and have very little seam interference – i.e. no blisters. I do have a few pairs of Injini socks (toe socks). Last year I started rubbing blisters between a couple toes due to a slight injury. The material helped and I no longer blistered.
(4) RoadRunnerSports.com. There is an online competitor that offers discounts to WISH members…I have a long term relationship with RoadRunner and their service is outstanding.

your 59 minute 10k should get you into A if they do not revise the starting corrals. If they do, you are more than likely to be a B worst case.

I'm so excited to be running the 5K in the morning and the Half at night and for training purposes I just signed up for a similar race here in Ontario, Canada. I thought I would post it incase anyone else is interested in running these races.

Its called The Twenty Valley Run, Wine & Dine Weekend and its on July 16-17 near Niagara Falls in Ontario Canada. You can run the 5K or the 10K Saturday night and then run the Half (they also have a 3K) Sunday morning. I thought it will be fabulous training for the Disney W&D race.

Here is the link incase anyone is interested and if you sign up let me know and we can meetup:

Hey everyone!
Just a few quick question:
(1) What are your 1 or 2 items you never leave the house without when you go for your run?

I just bring my RoadID and Garmin Watch. I don't bring anything else most of the time (no phone, no keys, no water, etc)
(2) What are your favorite types of running clothing?
Nothing cotton. Most of the year I just wear shorts. I warm up quickly when I run so unless it is around 40 or below I don't wear anything other then shorts, socks, and shoes.
(3) Any good suggestions for socks?
Just stay away from cotton. I have a bunch of different running socks and all are wicking.
(4) Where do you purchase your running gear?
Online: Runningwarehouse
Store: Fleet Feet

DH and I are getting so excited! I finally have him on a consistent training schedule so hopefully we will be able to finish with a decent time. I would be happy with under 2:30 but ecstatic for 2:15 or under so we shall see. We both put 3 hours for our finish times but we will be doing a 10k or two before the half so we'll have a better idea of what pace we'll be at.

Thanks for the map that is very helpful.

Does anyone know how the relay is going to work? I am doing the first leg and my husband wants to know how he will know I am coming and/or find me to start his run?

And will I get my medal when I finish my leg? Or when I arrive at Epcot via bus? Or do we both get them when he finishes?

Hi Dan - THanks so much. That is awesome. And don't worry, I am not trying to get to 6 minutes. Don't think I am genetically engineered for that!

Just love Eeyore - Sorry for your loss. It can be very traumatic. I hope that you have found what you wanted to with running. I think you are doing a fantastic job based on your 10K times.

cewait - I would like to thank you now for coming back to cheer me on. Bring your beer and a lawn chair. :rotfl2:

Michele
