Hi everyone! I've been lurking through this thread for awhile debating whether or not to do the Princess 1/2. Well, I did the Wine n Dine 1/2 last weekend (my first event ever!) and I have to say I'm hooked!:yay: Haven't officially registered waiting to see if I can recruit any friends but I see that a lot of you are going at it solo, so that won't stop me. Thanks for all the wonderful tips and congrats on everyone's awesome runs. :lovestruc

Trudes, congrats on the race!! Great time!!!

so probably sometime in December with the idea of keeping a 10 mile long run base on weekends, and working on speed during the week.

Thanks! How did you chose 10 miles as a base onthe weekends? I am just curious. I wonder if that would help me have a better finish if I had a longer base, or if I should work harder on my midweek training to build more strength. I am very much still learning. A 10 mile run isn't bad at all. It's something for me to ponder.

Here I am, almost to the Finish Line. I am in the orange.

To answer the question about base mileage, I didn't choose it, actually, the running group that I train with did. This next part is long and may feel ad-like, as I didn't realize until I typed it how much I really am an advocate for the group! So, feel free to skip. :)

I train with an "official" Galloway group here in Raleigh, actually one of if not the largest one in the country. We have almost 500 members, split into pace groups from 7mm up to 15mm, and do a long run together every Sat AM.

The season goes from May - Dec and starts with 3 miles, works up to 10, then stays at a base of 10 all season with individuals choosing to do more by week, based on whether they are training for half or full, and which race they have chosen. A half marathoner goes to 14 before the race, and a full goes to 26.

They choose a different route each week, and each pace group does Galloway's interval recommendation based on min per mile. I am in either the 12 (2:1 intervals) or 13 (1:1 intervals) group, depending on how I am feeling. We also train 2mm slow for long runs, on Galloway's recommendation. They also recommend hill or speed intervals for two 30 min runs weekly, which you do on your own. I have been lucky to find a few friends who live close by, and occasionally we meet up for our short runs.

We almost always meet at a local run store, different ones each week, and they "sponsor" the run by providing 15-25% discounts on all merchandise, and coffee, water, and food post-run. The group provides water stops about every 2 miles on most runs, and each pace group has 1-4 leaders that keep everyone on pace and together. No ipods are allowed, and the emphasis is on keeping your pace "conversational".

I will say, for me it's awesome to run in a big group like this. It makes the time fly by to have multiple people to talk to, and it also is very encouraging to be running with people at your pace and general fitness level. Having to run with a group (my pace group has 20-40 people depending on week), is good practice for race day as well, as you have to be aware of the people around you.

In the winter, we will be splitting up into "winter run" groups, which is a come if you can and organized by the pace group leaders. This one will be free, no water provided past what you bring, no food or sponsorship, but at least is a way to continue to train with a group if you so desire.

Kat, thanks so much for the information. It sounds like you have an amazing running group.

Sure! General mileage plans for the halfers are pretty simple. 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, then stay at 10 for the remainder. 5 weeks before the half, do 12, 3 weeks before the half, do 14. Keep each weekly run around 3-4 miles or at 30 min, not counting warmup/cooldown, and depending on your pace. It's okay to skip or reduce a few of the 10 milers if you have to (life gets in the way after all).

For you, since you just completed a half, I would think that you can assume that you already can do the base 10 mile mileage if you wanted to, and not have to work back up.

Oh, and the group is not free, but not hugely expensive either. The fee averages out to less than $15/month, and the running store and race discounts practically pay for it. It includes a singlet, a subscription to Running World, monthly happy hours, weekly e-newsletters with running tips, 4-5 running seminars per season, a seminar given by Jeff himself, a medal when you get to 13.1 miles in training, a mid-season pancake breakfast, and a post-season party.

I like the thought of 14 miles in training. I didn't like the thought of just 10miles, so I went to 12 with my training.

I used M4M for my training, and just tweaked it a little to get me to 12 miles for the half.

You are so fortunate to have a running group. I live in a very small town, and it's an hour to a running store.

Check out the 18 week training programs by Jeff Gallaway on the rundisney site. They begin tomorrow. I was looking at the middle program and WOW there is a 14, 16, and 18 mile long run. I usually top out at 10, but may modify it and do a few "extra" long training runs (12-14 mile range), but I don't see myself doing 16 and 18 mile runs for a half marathon.

I've been reading thru some of the posts here, and am curious about everyone's training.

How many have started their official training for the Princess 1/2 already?

If not, when does your training officially begin?

How many live further north, and will train in the snow this winter?

I am training for the princess now, I am still over weight and slow so I need all the training I can get. I also have my first long race in 4 weeks a 15K. I ran/walked 8 miles yesterday, i have some knee shin pain.

I live in IL and for the winter I hope to outside as much as I can stand it. I do have a treadmill at home, but I just can't see myself doing long runs on it.

Also, I have made a reservation for Friday night of the princess at the new Mexican Place in Epcot. I know we talked before about a Dis Meet, if anyone wants to meet up there let me know and I can edit the reservation.

I need to figure out when my official training will begin. I need to map it out yet. I am thinking Mid to late November.

Having just ran my half yesterday, I need to figure how I approach maintenance running until I start training for the Princess.:confused3

I live in Northern WI, and I will be training in the snow. Some days will be just too cold to train outside, but I will do as much as I can outside. I have a treadmill and I will be running on that when necessary. I can't imagine my long runs on the treadmill, I will be hoping for decent weather on the weekends.

I echo what Megan said, I LIKE running in the cold and snow. It's so peaceful. I do run in Yaktrax and they are amazing. I love them. I don't even notice them on my feet. I have some good cold weather running gear so if it's about 15º and a reasonable wind chill, I'll be out there.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS and what a time!!!! You are amazing!

Now, regarding the question...what now. I am doing an 8 week running maintenance program and the fist week of December, I will start my Princess 12 week training schedule. Like you, it will be in the snow. Bring it. I am ready!

Again, CONGRATULATIONS and welcome to the club!

I agree. I don't see a 16-18 mile long run for a HM. I feel you are just asking for injuries.

So, where is the best place for a grown woman to purchase her tutu for the race? Getting prepared . . . DD's coach said I may know about the competition schedule for February this week! Praying it's not during Princess Weekend! I REALLY want to do this one!

Thanks Laurie! I thought about you and your Blog post when I was running.

As I look at my 14 week training program that I just completed, with maintenance running, I can shorten the official training to about 10 or 12 weeks, because the longest run in the 1st four weeks is 5 miles. Though I haven't figured out my maintenance running yet, I plan to be running longer runs then that on the weekend.

I am anxious to mull this through a little and get it on a calendar. I love crossing off my training as I complete it.

One thing I do know, is I am done with Cliff Shot bloks. I used them for my half because I used them in training. They didn't make me sick, but it's a wad in my mouth and too sweet. I need to do some experimenting. I am thinking about the Sports Beans. I haven't done a 10 mile run without them, so I don't know how a run would be without the extra carbs, sodium, and potassium. But, I don't want to take a chance of "hitting the wall".

So you will be running in the snow too. Like you, I say bring it, I am ready.

Today I registered for a 5 Mile Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day, and I will do a 5K with my sister in Oshkosh in December. Can't wait!

Those of you who have just finished a Half, what do you really mean by 'starting' your Princess training? I have a half in 2 weeks and then I will start thinking about the Princess. But, surely, no one is dropping their long runs back down to the 2-3-4 miles that these training plans suggest for the first weeks of Half Marathon training.

I assume it's more of a maintenance with speed/endurance improvement training that I need.

Assuming I make it through this HM alive, I'll need a week or two to breathe and then I'll definitely want to dive back in. I just haven't yet decided exactly HOW...

I really like the SPorts Beans and I would pop a few in my moth at the same time. I tried Chomps early on in training and HATED THEM! You are so right as they are so big and takes forever to eat them. Its GU and Sports beans for me!

My 8 week maintenance plan calls for two easy runs, a Tempo/speedwork run and the long runs are about 7-8 miles. That is where my 12 week Princess plan picks up at...8 mile long runs I believe. I am using runnersworld.com Smart Coach.

Just be aware that you'll need to bring and carry your own as from what I understand Disney provides Clif product on course. I don't know if it's the gels or what, but it's something to be aware of.

I don't even depend on any race for my water/Gatorade. I wear my fuel belt filled to the brim with my stuff.

I am going to follow the Galloway training starting Tuesday. I completed Couch 2 5k 2 weeks ago, so happy I can run 30 minutes straight now! I did 2 1/2's many years ago using Galloway, its a GREAT plan for a beginner.

I emailed the local Galloway group about a group....though still not sure I kind of like running alone.

I live in Atlanta, it gets cold, but nothing like up north I just make sure I have a hat and gloves and layer.

I did my second 5k yesterday and completed it in 40 min 14 sec. I was hoping to get under 40 min,but I am happy. The first 5k I did in August took me 45 min, so I was pretty happy with the improvement.

GREAT JOB! Way to shave 5 minutes off your time.

I agree on the 16-18 miles as well.

I also agree on the shot blocks. I have tried them once and said no way. I like Gu, but it is also too sweet and gets messy when you don't eat all at once. I am really liking the sports beans, especially the cherry with added caffeine.

They are sweet, but more in a sour/salty/sweet kind of way, and little to no aftertaste.
