Today I did it, I ran my first ever race, which was a 1/2marathon..and unfortunatly it was in the POURING rain! But I did it, I ran the entire 13miles and at 1/4mile from the finish my lower legs locked up in some bizarre cramping thing, they just locked..rubbed them down and ran to the finish..10feet from the finish line my left one locked..I literally had to drag it till i could try and run, I finally made it over the finish line, it wasn't graceful but I made it..Medical took over from there and helped get me walking at least..finally got to enjoy my moment about an hour later when I felt the cramping was gone..now im like a little kid telling everyone!!! LOL!

My official time was 1hr58min, i came in 4th for my age group.. It is a proud moment for me, i never knew i could run...

Now, i just got to figure this cramping thing out cause i had more than enough electrolytes in me and was plenty hydrated so I am not sure what was off..

Today just made me even more excited for the princess 1/2!! I can't wait!

Hi all, I have 2 questions:

1) What do we think the chances are that they will add the YC/BC or Boardwalk to the host hotel list? I'd like to stay at the Dolphin or Swan, but not without Race and Expo transportation.

2) Stitch. Not the one who gets loose in the MK, but the annoying one that comes and goes below my rib cage. I've read various remedies (blowing through pursed lips rapidly, stretching the side, etc), but besides strengthening my core (which is pretty strong already), what else can I do to AVOID getting them in the first place?

thanks
karen

Two weeks from today!!!

fantastic run!!! really learning alot from you!

YOU RAWK!! I lost my mom from breast cancer 2 years ago and I want to personally THANK YOU for running this race. You smoked it!

the place was ALIVE with support. truly amazing. so sorry to hear about your mom - it's so great though to see SO many people running for such a great cause

I got my run in. I set out for, and completed an 11 mile run.:banana:I was done at 11 though. It was a 12 mile route, and I walked mile 12 as a cool down. I have NEVER ran that far before.

I learn things everytime I run it seems. I ate toast w/peanut butter and a banana 30-40 minutes before I ran, and had a up of coffee. I burped peanut butter the first couple of miles. I ate GU chomps through out the run after 45 minutes into my run. I think they are a little sweet for me, and they are a mouth full to chew while running.

And.....my run was out in the country, translate that to NO bathrooms. At mile 5, I needed to go to the bathroom. All that running stirs up the GI tract. Made for a difficult 6 more miles of running and a mile of walking. :worried:

nice work!!! my longest is only 6 and i'm SO afraid of those double digits!!

GREAT job, Nancy! That's a spectacular time.

If my knee is better, and I'm praying it will be, I'm running the Fifth Avenue Mile (NYRR) on 9/26, if you're interested. They shut down Fifth Avenue for the local runners. After the local race, the fastest milers in the world will be trying for world records.

sounds like fun! i'll be coming home from disney on 9/26 though - bummer! maybe another one? oct. 3rd is a 10k on governer's island i was thinking of doing :)

I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT!!! :yay::woohoo:

the race was HUGE!!! what a wonderful turn out for the susan g. komen race for the cure! i believe there were more than 25,000 runners!!!

anyway, the temperature was cool but it was definitely humid. i was hoping to finish in under 35 minutes. i felt great during the run. the first mile or so was spent trying to make my way around the slower people and the walkers. it was a little annoying but no biggie. the first mile went by quickly. second mile a little slower and i was feeling a little tired by around 2.5 but was just pumped that i was actually running a race so i pushed through!

well, i finished....in 30:10! omg! i kicked some major butt!

thanks for all the well wishes!

amy - i missed you today - maybe we can find another race to run together?? rest that knee!

Great Job Nancy!! Congrats

I don't think they will change host hotels. I have never seen them change once they are announced

Oh my goodness!! CONGRATULATIONS AND JOB WELL DONE!!! You rocked it and to think that was your first race???!!! You are going to be so ready for Princess!

Its foam roller time!

Coach has great advice, but fluid intake wasn't the problem, I didn't have to pee, it was GI issue.

Sorry, I hope that you find something that works for you and calms that down. If running is the true cause and not what you eat or drink, have you considered trying the Galloway training methods using intervals that are 30 seconds? I improved my time a ton and never had any issues. Usually my stomach is really upset at the end of a long run, but I felt great. I used to have to take Immodium before my run or I would be sorry. Not anymore. :). Good Luck!

AWESOME JOB!! You certainly do learn something from each and every run even when they are bad. Doesn't 11 miles feel great as a huge accomplishment? Its something that YOU did and no one else. Congrats!!
YES! 11 is HUGE. I am pumped!

Company's coming, I will read your blog later, but congrats on your awesome run.

Thanks, I'll get something figured out. I did eat a cup of watermelon last night, oh....and tons of broccoli. I do weight watchers, so I always eat lots of fruits, veggies, and fiber. I need to revisit that I think.

well I am proud of myself - I did not get a chance to walk too much this week but today we did a 5k in town & I came in 48:22. Not really fast but this is the 1st race I ever did & I walked the entire race. It was exhilarating to say the least! My girls did the FunRun that came afterwards. This was a race called the Iron Matt, a race to benefit reasearch for pediatric brain tumors named in memory of a little boy in the town who died of this. Since we lost 2 other children this year to pediatric brain cancer, this was a reather fitting way to honor those children. Now I am looking forward to speeding up!

I like it!

Have you considered running 2 fast, 1 (or 2) really fast then a walk? Just this little mix will produce additional results. Do not get me wrong your pyramid run mentioned can be BRUTAL and amazing gains both mental and physical can be achieved from that alone.

For added fun, try doing the same intensities but with the treadmill elevation controller and not speed. If you were to set the mill on your regular long run speed and 2% elevation for a minute, then elevate to 5-6% for 1 minute at the same speed followed by 1minute at 8-10% then walk for 1 minute back on 2% and repeat you would focus more work on the hamstrings, glutes and inner quads. Hills are speed in disguise.

I will definitely try that, and the hill work! I have taken some time off and am getting back into training this coming week, so it may be a few weeks before I get back into speedwork.

Also, once it gets a bit cooler I am going to be doing at least one weekly short run outside in a hilly n'hood with a friend from my running club who is very close to me in pace and training level, so we can try out all sorts of fun stuff together.

I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT!!! :yay::woohoo:

Way to go on the 12 miles!! (I count the walking mile, all miles are *miles* in my book)

Sorry on the GI issue. :(

Thank you! I ran an 9.02min/mile the whole race..woohoo! I was getting it..!

After cramping so bad now i am scared to run again..lol!

Everyone's had such great running weekend- ya'll are awesome!

I took off this past week for a bunch of reasons and went out to do my long run (ie 4 miles) today. And it was tough, but I am glad I did it. I am just slow, and hoping this pace will pick up soon.

To that end, I have a question about speedwork. Is it something I can start working on now or should I wait? I was reading the Galloway book on running, and he says not to add speedwork until you have had a year of running under your belt. I am, of course, nowhere near that. But I am worried I will get swept if I don't get faster. Right now, my short runs on Tues and Thurs are on the treadmill and intervals that are slightly faster than my long runs. I am at about a 14 min mile on the treadmill and 15 for my long runs

Hi all,

I have been busy reading through your many pages of posts. I will be joining you all at the Princess 1/2. I plan to run the 5k with DD who is 12 and run the 1/2 the next day. My co-worker/friend will also be traveling with us as she is a huge Disney fan. We were pretty happy that our dean approved us to both take two personal days on the same days. :cool1:

I ran my first race ever, the Disneyland 1/2, over Labor Day weekend. It was amazing. I was fully convinced that I would walk the whole thing since I had been unable to train most of the summer due to surgery. I started running again 2 weeks prior to the race. Somehow I was able to run the majority of the race and finished in 2:30:57. I'm optimistic that I can finish the Princess a bit faster sinceI will have a lot more training time.

I plan to run a 10 k on the 26th of September with DH and DS 14. DH and I will be running the RnR Denver in October. After that, it will be a rest and then back to training.

In training for the upcoming races I am trying out the Galloway plan. Today we ran 2.85 miles on a fun run at the local Lululemon store. Then we headed to a flat trail to try out the Galloway plan. We made it 5.25 miles in and hour and then walked to final .75 to cool down. I have realized that it is much easier to run in the cool weather, at sea level. We live at 6200 ft. I can't change my altitude but will work on the temperature by doing the rest of my runs either much earlier in the AM or as the sun is going down.

If anyone is in the Denver metro area and interested in running together, PM me.

Wow what a great weekend! You guys are so inspirational.

I completed week 7 of c25k today and was really blah...but I did it although alot slower than normal. I don't know what the deal was, the humidity or maybe the fact I had my bootcamp workout yesterday and my body was just tired. On to week 8 and 28 minute runs. I am pretty sure this week I will be able to complete 3.1 miles in my training - including the walking before and after - if I can have a decent or good run, which I am sure I can. Today was just a bad day, everyone has them.

Thanks for all your race and running feedback. Really helps motivate me to stay with it and I am getting so excited for training for the 1/2.

hey laurie! (need a disney fix)

i just have to know - what is the song that makes you so emotional??? i saw that on your blog and am very curious (read: nosy).

when the 5k race for the cure started yesterday, we crossed the starting line while listening to melissa ethridge's song that goes something like, "i run for..., i run for ...." i hadn't heard it before. i'd heard of it but never listened because i knew it would make me cry. BUT, i feel like it's such an inspirational song that listening to it while i run would be a good thing.

that race against breast cancer really pumped me up because i saw so many SURVIVORS running and i just know i can do this if they are doing it after all they've been through.

the princess half is for the lukemia and lymphoma society - has anyone seen any links to fundraising? or do you have to do team in training to do the fundraising? i know they asked for a donation upon signing up but i'd like to see if friends and family will give some $$ towards the cause. my dear friend had hodgkins and i want to see if i can raise some money in honor of him.

Howdy, all! I registered for the Princess Half Marathon last night and started my training today (with a brisk 3-mile walk -- I'm very much a beginner!). I'm so excited! My best friend is joining me for sure and the dear friend who came up with the idea in the first place is still deciding about it.

I'll be following the discussion here avidly and I'm sure I'll have a thousand questions as time goes by -- what are the pros and cons of the different resorts, is my training plan sensible, where can I get the most appropriate tiara for the run ...

I'm with you saysay! Yesterday I finished Week 8 (2.75 mi.) and it was far and away my worst run. Actually, it ended up being more of a walk! I'm chalking it up to just getting over a cold/upper respiratory thing my kids brought home from school. But I certainly felt pumped (and smug :)) that I stuck with it and finished all 2.75! Tomorrow I'll go for 3!!

Hope everyone has a great training week!

David Cook (American Idol)

"The Time Of My Life"

I’ve been waiting for my dreams
To turn into something
I could believe in
And looking for that
Magic rainbow
On the horizon
I couldn’t see it
Until I let go
Gave into love and watched all the bitterness burn
Now I’m coming alive
Body and soul
And feelin’ my world start to turn

And I’ll taste every moment
And live it out loud
I know this is the time,
This is the time
To be more than a name
Or a face in the crowd
I know this is the time
This is the time of my life
Time of my life

Holding onto things that vanished
Into the air
Left me in pieces
But now I’m rising from the ashes
Finding my wings
And all that I needed
Was there all along
Within my reach
As close as the beat of my heart

So I’ll taste every moment
And live it out loud
I know this is the time,
This is the time to be
More than a name
Or a face in the crowd
I know this is the time
This is the time of my life
Time of my life

And I’m out on the edge of forever
Ready to run
I’m keeping my feet on the ground
My arms open wide
My face to the sun

I’ll taste every moment
And live it out loud
I know this is the time,
This is the time to be
More than a name
Or a face in the crowd
I know this is the time
This is the time of my life
Time of my life
More than a name
Or a face in the crowd
This is the time
This is the time of my life.
This is the time of my life.

After you have trained so hard and for so long and you are just a week or so out from your race and this song comes on...I dare you NOT to get choked up.
