Official 2008 Beijing Olympics Thread

The men I could tell were going to drop it (that and I'd heard about it early in the day--I just didn't know which exchange, but I was watching for it).

The guy left too early so the 3rd leg didn't catch up. I was glad they DQd the Brits, I think it was, they were WAY out of the zone.

The women have no excuse. The lane on their left was open which lessens the chaos at the last exchange. Her hand just wasn't opened quite right, I guess. Their drop made no sense to me.

Four out Eight teams in the Men's relay dropped the baton. Could the rain have had something to do with it?

The commentators also questioned whether or not the US team practiced at all, or were they just thrown together. :confused3

The Beach Volleyball game was great. Dalhausser was amazing in the third set. :thumbsup2

The relay teams of quite a few of the other countries practice together as a team all year. Some countries may just bring 6 sprinters, so they know well in advance who will be on their relay team. Our teams are patched together at the last minute. Instead of practicing pass offs for years, they practice for hours.

Also, most of our relay team members are "stars" who are used to running anchor. The people who are experienced at passing off are not out there.

Still no excuse!!!

The keepers used every color they had. Was so funny....we thought he'd just walk over the top of it and he basically laid down and made a grizzly paint angel.

Some great VB tonight!!

That was great Im sure for everyone to see the bear painting a bear angle...Who had the honor of washing him down????LOL

I was so proud of both our Mens VB Games last night and the indoor win was so sweet cause they had lost to Russia so many times:thumbsup2

So, regardless of the relay outcomes, I have this to say....

Why did we have to write USA on the tag? Even Bob Costas pointed it out.

After it airs everywhere, I'll add the funny that one of the women said in her interview.

So, what's the funny?

And what IS up with the "USA" handwritten in magic marker??? :confused3 That looks soooo unprofessional!!

Oh, that was so sad. To have it happen in BOTH the men's AND women's 4x100 relay is unthinkable. I attribute it to inadequate preparation. I don't think the runners spent nearly enough time practicing the exchanges or running the relays; they were too focused on their individual events. And the blame lies with the coaching. They obviously should have worked much more on this, ESPECIALLY after seeing what happened in the men's race.

I was always told that it is the responsibility of the passer to get the baton into the outstretched hand of the receiver, and it is the responsibility of the receiver to snatch the baton out of the passer's hand. The passer doesn't actually release it; it is pulled away from them.

On both the drops, it appears that the passer had released the baton too early.

But on to men's beach volleyball. Wow, that was great! I was really worried at the end of the second set. But did Dahlhauser come to life or what?!?! He was blocking like nothing I've ever seen before! He was unstoppable. That third set was incredible.

I loved how they were asked if that first round loss to Latvia was a wake up call for them. They said it was for the best - they ended up in the easier bracket and didn't have to face the Brazilians until the final game. "Um, yeah! We MEANT to do that!" ;)

Did not (could not ) stay up for the Men's Indoor Volleyball. Can I get a recap?

So, what's the funny?

Maybe about someone having a voodoo doll for the US?

We recorded the men's volleyball match...I'm watching it right now! But I actually had to look at the results because I was getting kind of nervous after the 3rd game. haha

And speaking of volleyball, the beach volleyball was pretty crazy. Tight match through the first 2 games, but then Dalhausser turned into a blocking machine! He roofed the one Brazilian 3 times in a row!

It seems there will be some review of their coaching and training practices:

Track leader not happy with U.S. relay debacle

By The Associated Press

BEIJING (AP) -- The leader of USA Track and Field said the federation will conduct a "comprehensive review" of the way it trains and coaches its relay teams after the men's and women's 4x100m relay teams each blew medal chances by dropping the baton in Olympic qualifying.

American men's and women's 4x100m relay teams drop the baton and do not advance to the finals. In his weekly blog on the USATF Web site, CEO Doug Logan said he has received a number of e-mails from fans saying the dropped batons in both relays Thursday were "reflective of a lack of preparation, lack of professionalism, and of leadership."

"I agree," Logan wrote Friday. "Dropping a baton isn't bad luck, it's bad execution. Responsibility for the relay debacle lies with many people and many groups, from administration to coaches to athletes. That's why, when these Games are completed, we will conduct a comprehensive review of all our programs."

Darvis Patton and Tyson Gay missed on the final exchange in the men's semifinal heat. Gay worked on exchanges with Patton in Beijing but was not present at the U.S. track team's training camp in Dalian, China, where two full practices were dedicated to baton passing.

Torri Edwards and Lauryn Williams bobbled the last exchange in the women's race.

The men missed the final for the first time since 1988, and the second since 1912, and the women for the first time since 1948.

It means the U.S. will go 0-for-6 in Olympic sprint events -- 100, 200 or relay -- for the first time ever.

"We could win the gold medal in every single track and field event, but if we don't win a single thing in the sprints and relays, the public will view our performance as a disaster," Logan wrote. "When we drop the baton in back-to-back relay races, the public views our performance as a disaster."

Jim Scherr, CEO of the U.S. Olympic Committee, said the track and field program can't be judged by only one Olympics.

"I think you have to look at it in the totality of what they've been able to do over the quadrennium in world championships and world cups and the Games," he said.

The Americans headed into Friday night's action with 20 medals, nine more than the next team, Russia. But only four of the U.S. medals were gold.

"When the men's marathon concludes on Sunday, we'll still be the world's No. 1 team in terms of medal count," Logan said. "We can be a much better team. And we will be."

And speaking of volleyball, the beach volleyball was pretty crazy. Tight match through the first 2 games, but then Dalhausser turned into a blocking machine! He roofed the one Brazilian 3 times in a row!

What was crazy was that Dalhausser was serving. Rogers never touched the ball for those 3 points! You'd think after the first two tries the Brazilians would have went with a cut shot, instead of trying to blast it at Dalhausser. He did it again on a fourth attempt, but the block went out of bounds.

But on to men's beach volleyball. Wow, that was great! I was really worried at the end of the second set. But did Dahlhauser come to life or what?!?! He was blocking like nothing I've ever seen before! He was unstoppable. That third set was incredible.

The Beast said "he blacked out "in the interveiw "an didnt know how he made all those blocks"...they wore down the over confident Brazilians and also ruffled their feathers too boot in the heat of the day an brought home the gold:woohoo:

I loved how they were asked if that first round loss to Latvia was a wake up call for them. They said it was for the best - they ended up in the easier bracket and didn't have to face the Brazilians until the final game. "Um, yeah! We MEANT to do that!" ;) :cool1:

I'm pretty sure both the men and the women will be playing Brazil in their gold medal matches.

if we can win both mens and womans final VB matches and the mens basket ball final that would be so awesome...an we will have won the gold medal race as well

I don't really have anything to add. You all have said it today. Just wanted to give us a bump.

I just saw the men's indoor VB replay (and managed to avoid hearing the results earlier). I'm glad I didn't see the whole match. It looked like it was theirs to win. Did Russia come back in game 3? They had the coach on live afterward. He did a nice job considering his circumstances.

Johnson & Johnson did a "family spotlight" commercial featuring the Lopez's. FWIW.

Did our guy with the decathlon? I had to turn off the TV and didn't see his 1500M run.

Also, I was secretly glad Jamaica dropped the baton. And I really cheered on the Russians!!!! I was very excited for them.

Ugh, was out at the zoo all day today. What did I miss, anything incredibly exciting? What's on late night tonight?
