Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I was absolutely horrified by most of the performances last night. There definitely was a problem with the band overpower the voices, which didn't help. I thought JPL, JS, Fantasia, Diana, and Camille all were TERRIBLE!! Either their voices or their movements or their song choice or ALL OF THE ABOVE. I'm just not "feeling it" this season like I was last year. Amy was boring/so-so. Jennifer Hudson was just "okay" as was LaToya this week (I usually am impressed by her). George and Jasmine were really good and seemed to have fun. Just too bad Jasmine had to 'scream' over the band. AI seems to be having too many technical difficulties this season.... wonder why? I've seen camera problems and we've all heard sound problems... what's up with all this?? It's not helping the performers at all!.............P

I think that the "all star" Motown band was showboating a bit (at the expense of the performers.

I predict that the bottom 3 will be Camille, JPL and John Stevens. Then again, Camille seems to be "Teflon" for some reason.

I hope that she's the one to go, since she's really stunk it up for 3 weeks in a row. However, all is not fair. I'm afraid it will be John Stevens.

I thought Jasmine had a break out performance last night and showed that she has some vocal power after singing "safe" songs the last couple of weeks.

Camille really disappointed me. After being in the bottom 3 twice she needed to hit a home run last night, but she didn't even attempt to do so. Maybe that is the best she can do. It's not good enough.

JPL - I have never liked him much, but I thought he was much better this week than last.

John Stevens - What can I say? Very sad to sing an entire song off-key on national television.

I thought George was great, he is the best at picking songs that consistantly play to his vocal strengths.

Fantasia and Latoya were very good, too.

The most popular morning show here was talking all about the band and how it really ruined last night. Camille reminds me of "goat girl" from last year....not too many people liked her but she kept getting through week after week.

Last week I felt Camille was the weakest singer, but Matt got booted off. This show is more a popularity contest then a singing contest. Even Simon said it's not just about the singing, it's the whole package.

And I know alot of people like Fantasia..but I just don't get it:confused: (even though she did good last night)

I'm another one who wishes they would let Simon talk...sometimes he really has some good advice to give and if they listen to him it makes a difference...look at Clay last year, he took everything Simon said and used it the following week.

George reminds me of Rueban...one style for every song. Remember Rueban sang with the hand on the heart and the other reaching out...George does the bouncy thing for every song. I like his voice alot, but after he sings he just stands there with that big old smile and does the same thing.

John S. looks scared to death and like he's going to cry all the time. Now I like John too. People that have seen him perform around here talk about how he blows them away..he needs to do that on AI, if he makes it through.

I don't get JPL...my husband and I thought he was brought in for comic relief, can't understand why he is still there, none of his performances stick in my head one way or the other (good or bad)

Last year I loved Clay from day 1, this year I'm not really giving my support to anyone person, hopefully that will change soon.

My kids were voting last night and at 10:30 they had no problems getting through for any of them. (they were voting for John S. and decided to see if anyone elses lines were free and they all were!) I think AI is going to lose it's ratings if they don't step it up a notch soon.

you would think that someone would have noticed the band problems and fixed it.

But you have to remember that what they are hearing live is a very different sound than what plays on television. Even Simon and Randy have commented how different their reactions were to performances after they've seen them on tape. I think the band did their job -- the sound man was the one responsible for controlling whether the singer's mike was in balance with the band. And again, if he is making that call based on what he is hearing in the "studio" it won't tranlate the same to those of us watching at home.

My personal and therefore very opinionated reactions:

THE GOOD
I am a Fantasia fan, although I think LaToya has a far better chance of winning this thing. Both did very well tonight with their vocals and presentation, although Fantasia worked the stage better. I can't help but love George, and he continues to pick wonderful songs to showcase his talents. Jasmine continues to impress me -- she is just radiant.

THE NOT-SO-BAD
Amy is very cute, with a great personality, but her voice doesn't quite make the cut for me. Diana is too robotic, although she has some great pipes. Until she can shed the staginess, though, she'll still be mid-level. (Randy was crazy to call that the best of the night.) And then there's Jennifer, who I loved early on. The making-faces thing quickly went from a-bit-too-stagy to really annoying. She's got a great voice, but the theatrics are too much. I was shocked that she was in the bottom three the first week, and a little sad that her popularity shot up with her straightened hair -- I kind of liked the natural 'fro.

THE UGLY
Camille, JPL, and John S. had awful nights, and I think the third strike is falling on Camille tonight. Eariler votes: Leah was the weakest, and Matt and Camille had done poorly twice, so the cuter one stayed. But I don't think there's anyone whose has consistently performed more poorly than Camille now. JPL has a following of pre-teens that will keep him on board, and John S. seems to have captured more hearts than Camille, although that really off-key performance will hurt him.

What is going on with this season!?!?!?! I don't really love anyone. Every week it's a crap shoot as to who will be good. I don't know... I still love the show, but motown night was just bad. And is it just me or are they doing less "behind the scenes" type segments. I feel like I don't really know the contestants like I did last year. Weird.

Some of the performers have been accused of playing it safe and not making the song "they're own". Well I thought Fantasia did exactly that. It was a Gladys Knight lip-synch all the way. A couple of yeah-yeah-yeahyeahs at the end does not make the song different.

I missed last night's show and it sounds like I didn't miss much. I'm not really into any of the singers. None of them stand out to me and I can't think of one who I would really like to see win. I can, on the other hand, think of several I would like to see voted off.

I do think Camille is not up to this competition, but I think John was way worse last night. After the first 15 seconds or so, Camille sounded so much better than last week. Still not good enough but better. I have noticed people saying this will be her third time in the bottom three, but if I remember correctly, last week was her first week there. The first week it was Leah, Jennifer and Amy wasn't it??

Nope, it was Camille, Amy, and Leah.

Is there a site that has how many votes per contestant per week?

.. usually I am not harsh but....DANG......... Could someone tell Ashford and Simpson it is 2004!!!

they look like they fell out of 1980.... maybe earlier........

honestly.. they need to be given a CLUE!!

:earseek: :earseek:  !!

George.. LOVE HIM! Did anyone else notice he is like a puppy.. he gets so excited he just quivers!
Jasmine did very well, still like Amy.. and even tho her hair was very distracting.. Latoya is a standout.

Actually the first week it was Leah, Jennifer and Amy, with Jennifer and Leah in the bottom 2.

I really hope it's Camile to go this week. She's the only one that has been horrible during every performance. I voted a lot for John Stevens last night because I like him and think it's too early for him to go. He had one bad performance, and I really do think that the loudness of the band really messed up some of the people last night.

I don't know what Randy and Paula were thinking when they said a few weeks ago that this is definitely the best top 12 they've had! I don't think most of these people would have even made it to the top 32 last year. Poor Clay and Kimberly Locke, if either of them were in this year's top 12, they would have had no problem winning the whole thing!

I also enjoyed seeing Simon apologize. That HAS to be a first!

What was the apology all about?

Just after Camille performed (thought it was just ok btw) :D ; I received one of the dreaded phone calls. I had been waiting for this call since 3:00 p.m. so I had to take it! The darned call lasted until well after the show. Frankly, due to the circumstances surrounding the call, I was (and still am) so ticked off--I really didn't care *gasp* about AI tonight.

I'm enjoying reading everyone else's opinions though--thanks for the updates.

As irritating as Simon can be, he usually is right on the mark! I'm a little perturbed at the attitude toward him this season and last. It's like contestants knew what to expect from him and were prepared with their "come-backs". I like Paula, but she rarely has anything constructive to say. She doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but come on.....some of these singers are awful - and these in the top 12 have "off nights" - be honest with them!

(ick! Camille can go now!)

Whew, thought I was going crazy for a minute.

Simon aplogized to George for telling him earlier in the competition that he was a "Motown Background singer". I almost always agree with Simon and I wish they would quit cutting him off too, it was really bad last night, they kept playing the music over him.

I think either Camile or John S. should be voted off. I do like John S., but he really isn't American Idol material. He's really not capable of singing the type of music that is considered "in" . I do think he has a place somewhere. I'm sure someone will want to give him a record deal and I sure hope he gets it, he really seems like such a nice kid:D

My prediction for the bottom 3: JPL and JS and Camille. Camille did better last night than last week. JS was horrible. Each note he sang was off key! And that's what Randy said.

Jasmine did a wonderful job! I like her. My favorites are: Jasmine, LaToya, and Fantasia. George is like another Rueben to me.

I was shocked myself when I heard Simon apologized to George. Simon said that Camille has probably 1 or 2 more rounds before she is out. I can believe that will happen. Camille hasn't been doing really well in the past weeks.

Who the??? what the???

Who is voting for Camille???? she is like a cat, she has 9 lives.
