Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

Overall I thought tonight wasn't that good.

John Stevens is my favorite and I thought he did great! I didn't even realize that he missed some words because he played it off very well. I was reading a lot of comments on AI message boards and I'm happy to see that people that don't even like him thought he did very well tonight. So my votes went to him as usual.

My second favorites for tonight were Latoya and Amy. I'm so glad they saved them for the end because some of the performances were getting so bad and they needed something to keep me watching!

I thought Camille, Jennifer, Jasmine and Matt all did horrible! I like Jennifer and Jasmine last week but this week was just really bad.

JPL I didn't think did as bad as the judges thought. He was just ok, but better then a lot tonight.

Diana, George and Fantasia were all also just ok. I'm still not getting the Diana or George hype and I guess I never will. I also thought Diana sounded pretty off at the beginning of the song.

Matt, JPL, and Camille bottom three. Absolutely terrible performances from them IMO. Jennifer and Jasmine were also weak, but hopefully their strong performances in the past will keep them in.

WOW!! I had book group tonight.. so I missed AI!

I am SOOO glad AMY redeemed herself this week, as last week was um.. not so hot! She and LaToya are my 2 top picks from the start...

In my book group there are two of us who are faithful AI fans... sure wish we could convince the other members to change to another night!!!

The bottom three isn't as clear to me this week. I don't think Jennifer deserved to be there last week, yet she didn't garner much support. Hmmm. . .Camille has performed poorly both last and this week. I'm not sure how she escaped last week's bottom 3. I think she should be the one to go this week.

Joining her at the bottom, gosh, Jasmine (whom I really liked last week), and a toss-up between Jon Peter (also a family favorite), Matthew, and Fantasia--class or not, she didn't do it for me with the Willie song AND it's way too early in the competition to be so mouthy.

It would be so much easier to vote for your least favorite performance! :D

I liked JPL, he has a really different kind of voice. Camille sounded really nervous, I hope that she dopesn't get voted off.

Was Fantasia really upset with Simon, or was she just joking? :D

I'm going to buck the trend on the last few replies: I thought John's forgetting his words is inexcusable at this point in the competition! It's a problems he's had since the first round and it just shows to me that he isn't going to be "the whole package".
It's not just about the voice and song selection. George was off key for the first part of his song--he got back on when the song could go louder, but ugh! Fantasia's attitude stunk. If she can't take feedback, then she isn't the one either.
Overall I am NOT impressed with the group of finalists this year.

and what's with all the negativity toward Simon this year from Ryan, Paula, and Randy? They won't even let him finish his feedback and yet, he doesn't butt into their comments. I like Simon. If he wouldn't be on, it wouldn't be worth watching and so I'm very annoyed with Ryan's sniping. I know it's part of the show's format this year, but it is too negative. The contestants are picking up on it and not listening either--they are "reacting".

I'm a little worried about John Stevens chances - I was able to getright through to vote! That almost NEVER happens so I voted for him about 5 times. I didn't realize he forgot the lyrics either until Randy or Simon mentioned it. I hope he doesn't go tonight. :(

I agree with your Simon statements--while he doesn't gush over performances very often, I don't see that his statements are all that terrible. Most of the time he's not commenting on the "performance" so much as the little things the contestant needs to do to adjust their appearance onstage.

Really, think about it, he didn't criticize many of them for their voices or song choice, merely the presentation of the material. This is constructive criticism intended to assist them in defining their own style and personality. I'm really tired of all the catcalling, hissing, and backtalk from some of the contestants. If you don't like his message, take it like a man/woman, and use it or ignore it.

Most of the time, I tend to agree with Simon's assessments. Very seldom do I agree with Randy and Paula is always providing a positive note rather than getting to the heart of the matter. She's definitely a pleaser, not a critic.

I so agree with you. I do think Simon gives constructive criticism. The best you can do with that is use it to improve yourself. Look at Clay and Kimberly Locke last year. They both were transformed because of what Simon told them.

I just think the show is getting old. I can't just sit and watch it like I did last year. I am constantly flicking between stations and only watching the performances and some of the judges comments. I know that EW had an article about the 5 things that are wrong with AI this year and I agreeded with that article.

I think Matt, Jennifer and Fantantasi all have attitudes. NIce to here that Josh's CD is doing well. I was wondering what happened to him.

I agree as well, Simon is usually right on with what he says, even if people don't like it.

Hi! Just found this board and I love it already. I'm usually over at the DCL or DVC forums. I'm a big AI and Survivor fan. Just wondered if anyone had any comments about Simon and Paula's kiss on the big screen -- what is going on there? Also agree with those who have commented on the attitude and big mouths of some of the contestants this season -- Fantasia especially. I really liked her at first, but I am getting turned off quickly.

Hi jeanniec --- I've been spending more time on the community board than DCL lately. Which is why I haven't posted so much lately on our thread.

I must have been channel surfing when Paula and Simon kissed.

That kiss was from last year! It as a joke!

My favorites from last night were John Stevens, LaToya and Amy.
My prediction for the bottom three is Camille, Jennifer and JPL, with Jennifer going home.

I think this year's American Idol will be LaToya. She has shown a lot of versatility, and hasn't had a bad performance yet. She also has a very engaging personality, IMO. John Stevens will get a record contract no matter how far he makes it in this competition, just because his voice and style are so different. I really like him, but man, he needs to get some personality!

Beatty family -- I know Simon and Paula kissed last season and it was a joke, but I didn't know this was a rerun smooch. Thanks for the info.

I see LaToya as the winner. She is fantastic -- absolutely wonderful last night. I was also really surprised (as I guess everyone was) at how good Amy was. Don't see any chance of her becoming Idol, however. It was a good night for her, tho.

I know that La Toya has been consistantly good but she does nothing for me just like Ruben did nothing for me. It wouldn't surprise me if she won but I certainly will not be buying her CD. Her voice is fine but nothing special or different to me.

I loved Kelly and Clay and bought their CDs.

I think George and Amy are ok, and Amy had a wonderful performance last night but they do nothing for me either. Unless Amy does a country CD, I wouldn't buy her CD. This was the first time I enjoyed Amy. It wouldn't surprise me if George won either as he's got the same kind of fan base as Ruben did and he has a great personality. I just don't care for his voice.

I can't stand Matt, Fantasia (although last night's performance was her best so far), Jennifer and Camile.

I enjoy John Stevens, JPL sometimes, Diana, Jasmine (but not last night). I voted like crazy for John Stevens last night and he's the underdog I'm really rooting for! Something about Diana's personality bugs me. She seems too perky/fake/confident?? Not sure what it is but she's still a great singer.

I think the bottom three should be Jennifer, Camile and Matt or JPL (even though I love him). I think Camile should go this week with Matt being next and then either JPL or Jennifer.

One of the major differences we are seeing this year is that there are some very young performers who haven't really developed their character as yet. I am really looking forward to watching this metamorphosis as the show progresses. We've got over-actors (bubbly, bubbly) and under-actors (so shy) who need to find their comfort zone. John is starting to develop some confidence but has a ways to go. I thought he made great strides in that direction last night and I think that him living in the mansion with the adults will bring him out. Comparing these kids to La Toya who is 25 is difficult as we are comparing children to adults. I'd say they are definitely holding their own.

Camile 18
Fantasia 19
Diana 16
Jasmine 17
John Stevens 16

George 22
Amy 24
Jennifer 22
Jon Peter 24
La Toya 25
Matt 25

I'm still so divided about who i like this year. I don't know if season 2 jaded me or what, but I'm not finding myself enjoying this group as much as last year. The attitudes from some of the contestants really are getting on my nerves. I'd like to see Fantasia go very soon! I think tonight it'll be Jennifer though. I'm excited to see Kim Locke perfom! I already love her single.

Oooooh, Kim Locke is singing tonight???? She was my favorite from last season!!!
