Off-Site Food Delivery Flyers

On our last couple of trips, I recall seeing a number of warnings about the flyers from off-site pizza places and other food delivery services, something to the effect that if you called them, they'd steal your credit card numbers, raid your accounts and track down and kill your dog. Does anyone have a sense of whether there is a legitimate threat from ordering from these places, or is this just Disney protecting its turf with scare tactics?

Not planning on ordering from any of those places, just curious.

Its a bit of both.

I don't mind Disney protecting its turf, but I'd really mind being the victim of a ripoff. Which would bother you more?

If Disney was so concerned about identity theft they wouldn't put your name, where you're staying and date of check out on your parking pass.

If you got a food flyer under your hotel room door, would you bother to look them up in the Yellow Pages to see if they have an actual restaurant and legitimate phone number that matches the flyer? Most people would say 'No.' So you call the number on the flyer and order. Payment by credit card only. You are giving faceless strangers, in a strange town, your name and financial info. Later, no food shows up, or a cheap, frozen-type pizza comes, and you don't realize it until the delivery guy is long-gone. When you realize you've been ripped off, you desperately call your bank to cancel your CC and arrange a new card. If you're lucky, you have another CC with you to use on your vacation, in place of the one that's been compromised.

This is a popular tourist crime in the Disney area. Tourists are too trusting and not on their guard while vacationing. Those flyers show up all the time, on random days, and not just at Disney hotels. The randomness makes it hard to catch the people involved. I think Disney and other hoteliers are taking the high road, and trying to prevent their guests from becoming easy crime victims. After all, if you did get ripped off, wouldn't you blame Disney even though it's nearly impossible for Disney to stop the influx of flyers.

That is a very common scam in tourist areas. I try to be realistic about things, but I do not think this is a case of Disney trying to keep that business for themselves. There are legitimate places that deliver pizza to WDW and none of them leave flyers around the resorts.

I don't see how this information is the same as giving out your credit card number to a strange person/business on the phone?

Did I say it was the same as giving a credit card number? No I didn't. But this is a way that someone can get information about you and use it to harm you. With your name on the parking pass anyone can get your name, where you're staying, when you got there and when you're leaving. They also have the make and model of your car and the license plate number. But Disney is okay with this breach of privacy.

When I get any take out anywhere, I pay cash for it. If they won't take cash, I won't order. If you get a bad meal from them, You can say I only lost cash (as valuable as that is), but it's alot less hassle than credit card stealing.

In all actuality?? I'm much more concerned with the fact that these people are hanging around the resorts. I really wish that there were some way to prevent those without legitimate business from being in the 'living' areas of resorts...especially those with interior hallways.

And have to agree with the whole parking permit issue. I wish they wouldn't put the family name on the permit. The room number maybe but not the family name.

The last time I was at AS Music, someone jiggled the door to my resort room while I was in the bathroom. It was rather frightening as I thought for sure a person was trying to break into my room. Nope...it was a flyer being shoved in the door. What was to prevent them from coming in if the door HAD been open? The whole thing really gave me the creeps. I'd never order pizza or anything else from a company who doesn't mind scaring and disturbing guests. It isn't worth any savings over getting food from the resort.

This is kind of true. They leave your ME notice on your door too. I was surprised about that because it had all our luggage tags and stuff in there. Guess people probably can't do too much harm, but it did have my kids' names and stuff on it. Not sure I really loved that.

If you think Disney does not have your best interest in warning you, then go ahead and use them and you can then judge for yourself. Just remember you were warned.

Thanks for the intel. As I said, had no intention of ordering from any of them, was genuinely curious if this was an actual scam or not.

It is a scam that plagues tourist areas. You can google it or search the Orlando Sentinel website. I'm glad WDW and other hoteliers are trying to spread the word about this; I also wish they could stop the scam artists from roaming the resorts.

There is a legitimate threat - it was even a story on the Today show referencing the Orlando area. Reputable food places know they are not allowed on Disney grounds to put flyers under doors. If you ask the concierge, they should be able to provide you with menus for reputable places and then I believe you have to meet the delivery person in the main building.

One red flag is if they take credit card only. They will usually ask for it over the phone and then the pizza will never come. Or they will deliver you pizza but it's a frozen one they heat up and throw in a box to help deter any red flags you may have. You are better off looking in the yellow pages or going to the concierge.
