I'm considering joining DVC. I was wondering if someone would mind looking up the number of points for the following non-DVC vacations. If there is a website where I can look these up myself, that would be even better.

7-night Western Carribbean DCL Cruise, Category 7, for two adults, sailing 1/14-1/21/06

Disneyland Grand Californian Hotel, Standard Room, for two adults and 1 child, 1/14-1/17/06.

Thanks in advance.

The 2006 chart for the DL Resorts isn't posted on the Members' Website yet. Best I can do is the cost for the comparable dates in 2005. I'm sure there will be some type of increase.

39 points per night. Don't think it makes a difference how many people stay in the room as long as you do not exceed the maximum capacity.

FWIW, the best economic value of DVC points is using them to stay at one of the DVC resorts. Most members will tell you that you are better off to pay cash for the non-DVC options. They say you should either buy less DVC points to begin with or rent the DVC points and use the proceeds to do the non-DVC options.

Best wishes-

Carol,

Thank you for looking up those numbers. I've seen what you are saying ref: the economics of using points for non-DVC resorts posted in other threads. There must be something that I am missing when I'm looking at this....

I'm calculating that each 'point' will cost me about $7, assuming that you buy at SSR (i'm figuring $95 for each point, divided by the 47 points that you get over 47 years, plus a conservative estimate of $5/year/point dues over that time).

Based on this, for example, if the two of us were to sail on this cruise on points, it appears that we would pay roughly $2800. The cash cost of the cruise is $3400 (if you don't include air or travel insurance). Realizing that the point cost of DCL is not fixed, it doesn't seem like paying cash makes much sense in this instance.

Again, I know that there must be something that I'm missing. Can you rent your points for much more than they are worth and use the margin to justify paying cash for a non-DVC vacation?

Brian

200 points each will rent easily for $4000 vs $ 3400 (your number). You are assuming that we rent points for "cost". I would also take exception to ignoring the time value of money (you are valuing today's purchase price dollar the same as dues to be paid in 47 years). That being said, I don't think your $7 is off that much (I'd suggest closer to $8 if you did not finance). However, some just don't want the bother of renting.

Nothing wrong with your thinking - it's just that if you are willing to do the work, you can rent DVC points for more than the $7 you calculated as your cost.

Many members value their points at what they can get for renting rather than what they cost to buy & hold. An "average" rental price for a rental arranged on the DIS Rent/Trade Board, is around $10/point. Many members rent for quite a bit more than that - up to $15 and higher (but it's probably harder to get the higher amounts if you use this site for your advertsing). Anyway, that's why many say to rent your DVC points and pay cash for the non-DVC options. (Renting does require some work on the owner's part and entails some risk, but as you can see, it is often well-rewarded).

HTH

Best wishes -

Disney clf. hotel 52 points a night weekends or weekdays, i had asked MS today, DL hotel 32 points a night weekends or weekdays.

dvc is really set up for using the points at dvc resorts in wdw, you will be able to a lot less points there.
