We leave in 11 days!!! However, I'm evacuated to my MIL because we have NO POWER thanks to IKe. We were lucky, sustained very little damage, just a couple of small trees uprooted and our fence is leaning. However, we might not have power for a week or longer . They're saying up to 4 weeks! There are power poles in the street that runs next to our subdivsion. Plus, there are 1.56 million homes w/o power. So, who knows how long. While I should be at home getting things ready, I'm 250 miles from home. DH is at home because he has to work. He gets off a few days before leaving for Diseny so if we still don't have power, he's flying here then we'll drive home the day before our flight leaves to get everything ready. We considered flying out of Dallas instead of Hobby Houston but SW doesn't fly direct to MCO from Dallas. I'd rather drive to Houston then to have a layover. I told him I would drive home once he's off but he said no reason to since it could be so hot. The couple of days before we came here (we rode out the storm) it was 90+ with high humidity and not a breeze once Ike was gone. Of course, we came here, a small cold front came through down there and it's "only" been in the 80s. What a mess.
HOWEVER... I still have a home and we're all alive! Many people lost homes and some lost their lives. I feel very thankful to have dodged yet another bullet. We lived just north of NO during Katrina and we were one of about 10% of homes that didn't sustain water or tree damage. We had a bit a water come in, but it was on tile. MIL told me our luck is probably running out!
This is bringing people closer together. We have lived in our subidivision for about 15 months and we have met people we didn't know. Also, per DH, people are pooling their food and having little "block parites" . People are helping each other out and becoming friends with people they didn't know. So, something good can come out of it. Also, while visting with one of our neighbors, DH found out that they are leaving for Disney the same day we are and staying in AKL and we are staying in AKV. How cool is that!
This vacation will be much needed. DH will have not had a day off in almost a month before he's off before vacation. He's has been working 80 hour weeks for the past 5 months. Plus, he's in Houston, we're in Dallas now. So, needless to say, we need this time together.
