Observations - Then & Now

As your experience with photography grows, do you look back at some of your old pictures and wonder what in the world you were thinking when keeping some of that old junk? I am not really happy with Windows Vista, but it has an awesome photo screen saver. I have it set on the folder with all my pics. Because it is random, some of my old shots come up and I am left scratching my head on why I did not delete some of them.

True, my equipment is better now, but that does not explain why I held on to that old junk!
Please feel free to show your own.

I was told to save most of my photos so I could look back at it and torture myself!:rotfl: Nah, acually I was told that it's good to keep even the bad ones so that you can look it over and figure out what you did wrng and how to do it better next time. Since I am new to DSLR, I have quite a few that are still not up to par, but I'm learning and getting better... (I hope!)

Here's a before:

I couldn't even get these to come out on prvious trips!

Better equipment, a little more info than I had before...still a lot more to learn... I used to keep all the junk w/ my Oly because I couldn't see until it was blown up what it actually looked like! Once in the 'puter it takes time to go through one by one and delete...W/ the D80 I kept it all so I could analyze EXIF and figure out where the heck I went wrong. Now I'm starting to purge more and more of it immediately after taking and viewing. It's easier too with the larger LCD on the D80 vs my old Oly...I still have some scary ones that I took w/ my D80....:scared:

All of these were straight out of the camera, no PP.

Erm...

PS Okay, I know what it means... But I don't think that I do it very often... What I do have on my list of things to do is create a "my good pictures" hierarchy in my "my pictures" folder. Maybe I'll point the screensaver at the "my good pictures" folder once I've done that.

Now, anyone know any decent deals on big hard discs? For some reason I seem to keep running out of disc space...

I just about never delete anything, but my worst photos don't find their way to the internet. No need to advertise their existence. :teeth:

Because of that, I don't have many "then, now" shots, but here's one. From January 2006, with a Minolta Z5 point-n-shoot:

...and from January 2007, with my *ist DL:

As for screen savers, I usually use either GPhotoShow (there's a free version) or MotionPicture Screen Saver (free) - the latter scrolls over the photo, zooming slightly, then fades to another. Eye-catching though not always the best for actually evaluating the photo.

I always have my work PC set to do a slideshow of my photos, helps me feel like I'm getting something out of them. ;)

Groucho,

I took some fireworks shots tonight that are going to end up looking like your "then" shots. I had not planned on taking any Wishes shots, so left the tripod at home. We decided to stick around and watch, so I figured why not try some shots. I cannot see my results on the DW's laptop, so will have to wait to get back home to see what I got.

If you want an easy and quick way to view RAW files without loading a converter, Irfanview (when installed with the optional plug-ins) displays raw files (including PEFs) quickly and easily. You can also save them as JPG, though naturally you don't have a ton of choices for tweaking the raw parameters.

I'm highely guilty of not deleting bad ones.. well my old bad ones. I tend to only keep what i like now... unless im keeping some bad ones on purpose but I tend to know where they are. I'm going through my backdated photos from the past few months to put them on smugmug.... and im scratching my head on some things.

HI, I am new here, so I am still trying to figure out how to upload a photo to this site. ( I am on a Macbook). Any help?
I feel your pain, and I was thinking, I should weed the ugly stuff out. Maybe I'll just put it in a folder called "what happened?" and then burn it to a dvd and delete.<G>

I think most people upload their photos to Photobucket.com and once on there it gives you options to post your photos here. Sorry, I'm no at home right now so I can't tell you more info on how to do this but it's really easy and Photobucket is free.
