We are on a cement slab and I am thinking of putting hardwood in our kitchen. We have been told to glue down the laminate flooring, but just wondered if the real stuff would be laid the same way?

If it is "real" wood like the old kind then you have to nail it using a nailer. If it is a new kind then it probably will fit together in a groove along the side. You will then "tap" the edge to be sure that it fits tightly. There should be a video or at least an instruction sheet from the flooring company. Be sure to put a barrier between the concrete and the floor. They sell these at Home Depot or Loews. The glue was used on the first wood floors designed for the do it yourself market. For those you would put glue on the end/side then fit it to the next piece then use straps to hold it tight until it was dry. These took a lot longer to install. (Can you tell we have done a few floors over the years!)

I have never installed 3/4" hardwood on a concrete slab, but wouldn't think gluing it is possible. You will need a moisture barrier between the concrete and the wood, so glue won't work. I think you would have to install a built up wood sub floor which would add probably around 2" to the height of the floor.

You can't drive floor nails into concrete.

The "new" type of flooring you refer to is a floating floor.

it MUST float

or expansion will destroy it

Sorry, my mistake, no way are you going to nail into a concrete floor. Those are the old ones anyway, the new floors are much easier to put in.

A floating floor is the best idea. At the lake we have a concrete slab and we put in a laminate wood floor. It has held up really well. A good moisture barrier is really important. The new ones are very easy to install and hold up really well. Here at home we have wood floors throughout and I love them. They also float and were easy to install. The wood takes a little more care and that is why we didn't put it in at the lake. (Too much water there) We did not need to glue either one though.
