If you are mostly looking to do things down town you can stay in Jersey City for less then NYC and the path is a quick ride. There are a bunch of hotels down town, double tree, holiday inn etc.

Some that are very close to these attractions are pricey so depends on budget as well.

If your going to do midtown as well there are more options.

If it's just the 2 of you, priceline bid for your room. Check out betterbidding and biddingfortravel dot coms for bidding advice.

We are going in May, and we are staying in Long Island City, which is closer than Jersey City, bu twith the same benefits in terms of bigger rooms and lower prices. We are right near a station, (comfort inn, I believe ) and my cousin, who lives in Manhattan, said that we will be in most places in just a few minutes from there. Size of the Manhattan hotel rooms were an issue for us, since we are a family of five, and almost all of the hotels in Manhattan were $300 and up a night. LIC hotels were bigger, about $150 a night (some less!) and most included breakfast.

Did you know about the free nights for the 9/11 exhibit? I think it's on Tuesdays, and you have to reserve them in advance. We won't be there on a Tuesday, but that would have been a huge savings for us. The Trip Advisor forum has been a wealth of info for me planning our trip. Have fun!

We stayed in Secaucaus NJ across the river for $129 and breakfast/parking included. Embassy suits. The bus stop was out the front to Port authority bus stop. We walked, took the subway and had a great day. But, we didn't do the 911 memorial. We started at the Empire State Building, down to the museum of natural history and some shopping.

Check groupon and living social. They often have good deals on hotels in NYC and since you know your dates you can get book right there if you like the price for those dates.

Check city hotels for your dates (rather than assuming outside the city may be better). In my experience hotels are significantly cheaper on weeknights vs weekends so you may be able to find something affordable.

DD14 and I are going about the same days as you April 18-21st. We are staying at Holiday Inn Express 6th Ave for $144 night with AAA discount near Penn Station. We are taking megabus from Boston. We were originally going in Feb and planning on the free night at the 9/11 Museum and was told to line up by 4pm but a blizzard changed our dates.

I can't really help too much with hotels. We usually stay in Mid-town. We did stay at the Millennium Hilton (years ago) with Hotwire and it was great.
This is off topic, but is a hilarious nyc video:

We got in to the 9/11 museum for free on tuesday, Feb 24th of this year. My friend did the research and we stood in a line for maybe 20 minutes at the group tours entrance. We arrived right at 4 pm and there was a line, but it moved.

We did not have a reservation. I will say I thought the line was long, and it was a very cold day.

The museum closed at about 6pm, and that was about the time we left.

LIC is a great place to stay if parking is necessary. The neighborhood has some great cultural attractions and restaurants. The Mad Men exhibit at the Museum of Moving Image, for instance, and PS1 is great if you like post modern art. And the food - there's Doughnut Plant, and the Mu Ramen pop-up. And if you're interested in seeing the real NYC - not the tourist stuff in Manhattan - take the 7 train (You'll be right by a station) toward Main St. The neighborhoods you'll pass are awesome. For food, get off at 74 St-Jackson Heights and you'll be spoiled for Indian, Nepalese, Ecuadorian, Colombian, Korean. Or take it to the last stop at Main St-Flushing - that's the Chinatown of Queens and bigger than any other in NYC.

You guys are awesome!! Thank you for all the tips! I did not know the 9/11 was free Tuesday evenings..Thank you! We will be there on a Tuesday...

Anymore tips? Please feel free to keep posting!!

When we were in NYC for the US open we stayed at the Verve in Long Island City to save $s vs. staying in Manhattan. It's a super quick trip by subway into the center of the city from there, and this is typically your most economical option. Staying in Manhattan, though, I think would be more fun, and we set aside a bigger budget for our next NYC trip to do this. If you have a specific budget in mind, I'd recommend posting your dates and budget on trip advisor and asking the destination experts for suggestion. They seem to be right on top of great deals and know the hotels so well. With a small budget too they often will recommend Long Island City.

You really want to stay in the city -- the options are endless -- look on hotels.com for the best deals , you can always take a cab downtown or the subway -- stop by the 10 House fire station and say hi --- go to Central Park --- gonto Central Park zoo --- fan Schwartz rock center and the huge lego store...

We just got back. We stayed in Jersey City in a beautiful cndo with aviewof te city. Walked to the PATH everyda to takethe train in. It dros righ at th WTC. It wa Dhama Suites (Paulus Hook). There wasa grat little rocey store around the corner. We bought our dinnr there at the Deli andbreakfastalmost every day, saved us money. Good luck an have fun!

I stayed once at the Millennium, got it really cheap- 179.00 on priceline. Had no complaints about the hotel. I have stayed a few times at the Marriott Marquis and that really is my favorite place to stay. Love walking out the front door and being right in times square (though the last time there was hotel construction and we couldn't use the front of the hotel at all which was kind of a bummer but it may be done by now). I would not stay in Queens or Jersey city or anywhere else but Manhattan if you are there to visit NYC- there is nothing like staying right there in all the action and not having to worry about a bus or a train to go home. Once of mine and my daughters favorite things is hanging out sitting on the staircase right in Times Square at midnight just people watching. I would not want to have to worry about leaving and getting a bus/train to someplace else.
