The clock is ticking down Thursday to a possible transit strike at midnight, and despite some progress made during talks Wednesday night, the union says it's still moving full steam ahead with plans for a walkout.

Well - the countdown for NYC area Dissers - this should be a fun day! What Chaos we are in store for!

While I still feel a last minute deal, I was talking to a driver of one of the private bus lines today and well, he was really unsure as to what is going to happen. These people are for real this time.

Like I posted yesterday, I really hope there isn't a strike. Part of me thinks they are going to strike tomorrow, and it will be "settled" over the weekend. But that would stink for many of my coworkers. We HAVE to come in tomorrow, it's our deadline. I'll be able to get in, since the LIRR will be running. Going home won't be fun however.

Good Luck - I am going to work from home - so I guess I am very lucky! I think they might do one day just to prove a point! Lets hope we wake up to a normal comute though!

my husband is from Manhatten. We always visit the week between Christmas and New Years. Smart me had the bright idea to go the weekend before Christmas this year. We have a 1 and 5 year old and fil lives in midtown. Okay we take the bus from Boston to New York then hop on the subway. This is the last year I plan this weekend. We have an ice storm possibly on Friday in the Boston area then the transit strike in NYC to contend with.

I thought I heard on the news that an injunction had been agreed to by a judge "preventing" a strike due to its huge ramifications.

I just read an article about this. Are the transit workers demands outrageous? Or are they reasonable?

I don't live in the city anymore but I was planning on seeing the tree tomorrow. I am not doing that anymore.

Free4Life11: FWIW, I don't think all of the transit workers demands are outrageous. Some of the things like the female employees wanting half-way decent bathrooms is extremely reasonable. I do think their idea of a raise is a little outlandish though.

Thanks for the info. All I read is they want an 8% raise. That's a little steep I will admit...I don't know ANYONE who get's that big of a raise. But I wonder how much the transit big wigs make each year?? Kind of reminds me of that company loyalty thread.

They threat a strike alot when there contract expires. I doubt very much it will happen. The fines are very high if they do.

I do remember the 80 strike. It was actually fun(I was young!) but it was also in April. Big difference in the weather.

I agree! I heard that fines can reach up to $25,000 personally for each striking employee that doesn't show for work!

some are not, like asking for clean bathrooms and rodent free locker rooms sounds like a normal request to me.there want 8% each year over 3 years coming out to 24 %,the city will not go for a 24 % raise.the 24% over 3 years comes out to 300 millions dollars more after the 3 rd year the city will not do this.another thing the city wants is new employees to pay half thier own medical insurance rates, which is 26 dollars a month.

They know they have the power to shut the city down!!! My DB lives in Brooklyn and works in Queens and told me he is going to work tomorrow if he has to walk. He is getting his Christams bonus tomorrow!! :rotfl:

Well what good is being in a union if you can't strike?? How are you supposed to get your demands met?? I always assumed unions threatre a strike to get their demands met. I don't think I'd ever pay into a union if I didn't have the right to strike without paying ridiculous fines. I wonder what the average city pay raise is, for people at city hall and stuff.

I totally agree on them wanting an 8% raise each year for 3 years. That is just nuts. No job pays that. Are they arguing over $26 a month for health insurance? I wish!!! I pay $40 a week for health insurance. But I agree they need cleaner bathrooms. I wouldn't touch those subway bathrooms with a 40ft pole. Fear Factor couldn't pay me enough to even look at some of them. Ever been to the Jay Street station in Brooklyn? Those bathrooms were downright pathetic.

actualy it is illegal for them to strike,if there is a strike they perdict at least a million cars more on the roads and thats in manhattan alone.2.5 million people use the nyc transit system daily.imagine, ambulances, police cars, firetrucks all sitting in massive grid lock trying to get to emergencys.people will die thats the reality of this strike.when they had the last mta strike in the 80's FDNY response times went form 4 minutes to 29 minutes.could you imagine calling 911 to wait a half of hour?it is illegal for any nyc employees to strike!could you see the FDNY or EMS,or NYPD on strike?i have to agree with nyc on this one a strike will help no one this time.the mta deserves alot more than what they make i agree on that, but holding the city hostage is not the way to do it.like i said cillivans will die if this happens, emergency traffic will be stuck in massive grid lock.remember the brain dies after 6 -9 minutes without oxygen.if it take us 20 mins to get to calls, alot of people will die.HUNDREDS of people stop breathing or go into cardiac arrest daily,i know i respond to many of these calls, and usally we are able to get them back, but if it is gonna take me over 15 mins to get there, then thier allready brain dead so whats the use of doing cpr?like i said the mta deserves alot more than they make,so does every nyc employee, but this is not the way to go about it.there will be a millon more cars on the road,so you can bet on gas shortages, gridlock, road rage incidents, reponse times going thru the roof.this is not the way to go about it,with a strike and holding the city hostage.

Why in the world would MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow ask the union to submit to independent arbitration if the negotiations fail, right in the middle of negotiations? He already seems resigned to failure and his comments only add fuel to the union's fight. Not a smart move, to say the least.

Why join a union if it is illegal for you to go on strike? How does the union have any "muscle" then? I guess I am just confused. I thought the whole reason people join unions is so that they can come together and demand better pay and working conditions and threatren to strike if they don't get what they ask for.

I think the strike may happen. :confused3

I was surprised when they announced schools would open two hours late if there's a strike. I don't recall hearing that the last time they threatened to strike.

The fines start at $25,000.00, then double each day. :earseek: If they strike for a week, each worker (over 33,000) would owe the city about 1 1/2 million dollars.

I hope they get a decent raise; not the 8%/8%/8% they're asking for, but more than the 3%/2% that was offered.

well, it goes like this.our union is 20,000 strong.so we recommond our workers to vote for bloomberg in the election, thats 20,000 votes plus our family and friends votes.in return we get a contract when he wins the election and all get pay raises.certain politicians understand that 20,000 strong means at least 60,000 votes, when it comes to our familys and friends and neighbors.so they don't want to make us not like them.plus if we decided were against you most of the other city unions all stay together.so if your running you'll have no chance.striking is not allowed by nyc employees and very illegal,it comes with fines of 2 million per day for the union,as well as 25 grand to each employee per day.also with 20,000 we can cause alot of grief for you, like 5,000 showing up at public funtions and protesting in front of the public and media, like in the case of the FDNY and NYPD which followed bloomberg around 24 hrs a day for 2 weeks right before elections.see how quick we got a contract with that stunt, trust me he did'nt need that publicity when he had 5,000-10,000 FDNY and NYPD guys showing up everywhere he was and screaming and protesting. It was all over every news channel.we got a contract ,a good one and fast.

I hope they dont strike. We are driving there from Pittsburgh the week after Christmas and using public transportation. That would really put a damper on our trip ::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::
