NYC restaurants ??

It will be me, my wife, and our 17 year old daughter. We would love to hit some of the small, mom & pop type locations. We love Italian, Asian..well all kinds really. Price is not an issue..we have given ourselves a nice budget for dining on this trip.

Ok, then I'd suggest:

  • Nobu 57
  • Momo***u Noodle Bar
  • Carbone
  • Quality Italian
  • Parm

Also - go to New York Magazine online and check out their "Grub Hub" section - it's my daily read and give great suggestions and options for dining around NYC

From a native New Yorker, I implore you...DO NOT EAT IN TIMES SQUARE. The restaurants are expensive and the food is mediocre.

Here are some of the better places in NYC

Gyu Kaku in the Lower East Side on Cooper Street (Japanese BBQ)

Parm in Little Italy (Italian)

Sunburnt Cow on Avenue C in the Lower East Side (Australian)

Korilla food truck (Korean BBQ)

Shake Shack (ONLY THE ONE ON 23RD STREET - the others are very subpar) (Burgers & Fries)

Vanessa's Dumplings (on Eldridge Street - Chinatown) - best dumplings in the city and only $1 for 4!

BLT Prime (E. 22nd Street) (steakhouse)

Artichokes (14th Street) - best pizza in NYC HANDS DOWN! tied with L&B Spumoni Gardens if you like sicilian slices

Topaz on 57th Street (very delicious Thai food)

Dominic Ansel's Bakery is really good but you have to avoid the lines early in the morning and go midday. Get a DKA, not a cronut.

Biryani Cart on 46th and 6th has the best Kati Rolls

The Halal Guys on 53rd St & 6th have the best halal food in NYC. NOTE: Only go to the one on the side of the street closest to Radio City Music Hall. There is one across the street and it is not as good. I promise.

These are just SOME of the delicious places in NYC. Avoid eating in Times Square if you can. You will thank me.

some of my favorites:

norma's for breakfast. expensive but so good! worth the splurge.

wafles and dinges food truck. YUM!

Lombardi's pizza

bistecca fiorentina. love this place, have had such great meals here, perfect if seeing a show

fresco by scotto. yummy Italian food

carmines. Italian, family style, good for a large group or with kids.

shake shack. great burgers and the black and white shake is fantastic. we went to the one across from the natural history museum and were very happy with it.

blue smoke bbq

virgils bbq

I am sure your wife and daughter would love the Palm Court at The Plaza for lunch. It's bright and airy and really beautiful. I took my daughters there and it was just lovely and how many times do you get to The Plaza Hotel?:goodvibes

Wow, so many to choose from! Thanks for the quick responses. Gives us some ideas to look at. I know my wife has already mentioned pizza at Lombardi's!!

If you guys really love pizza, there is a great pizza tour called "Scott's Pizza Tours"

He takes you to 4 or 5 different pizza places thru the city (all in walking distance of each other). It is a wonderful tour and this guy knows all about pizza.
He is on trip advisor too.

We love: Old Hempstead Steakhouse, Pastis, Juniors, Carnegy Deli, Norma's brunch.
Puddin, Lombardi's, Russ and Daughters, Katz Deli, Donut Plant I could go on and on.

OP, thanks for asking this question. We are visiting NYC in July. I'm putting together a file with all the names from this list. :cool1:

I second Shake Shack, but I go to all the locations.

S'mac has awesome Mac and cheese. I like Rosa Mexicana for a more upscale Mexican food experience.

Serendipity has amazing frozen hot chocolate but there is a less expensive similar version without the wait on the corner at Dylan's Candy Bar.

Walking around Chinatown and getting pastries or a dim sum brunch is a cool experience. There's a great authentic dim sum place on Elizabeth St, I'll try to find the name.

As far as the deli's mentioned, we prefer Carnegie followed by Stage Door, then Katz's. Next trip we plan to try Ben's New York Deli.

Unless you're big eaters, splitting the mile high sandwiches works well with a side of pickles, slaw, or fries.

I hear Le Bernardin is good.

Le Bernadin was the best meal I have ever eaten. Also the most expensive. Better than Victoria and Alberts and a lot more expensive (we got the wine pairings which I highly recommend).

It was recently listed as the 21st BEST restaurant in the world.

Yes, Eric Ripert WAS there and I acted like a middle school girl when he walked in the dining room. :rotfl:

I hated with a white hot passion Ellens Stardust Cafe in Times Square, at the time we were there OUR waitress was signing= very bad overprices service.

I hope you have fun it's such a great city!

I think you are largely right about this. But I still maintain that Toloache was yummy. ;)

I would normally agree with him as well, but Toloache is DELICIOUS. Their tacos are absolutely my favorite tacos I've ever eaten. Also delicious margaritas. :thumbsup2

Never been there, but I see they have a location on Thompson St. right near my favorite place to buy vinyl, Generation Records, (yes, folks...a record store still exists! ;) ) so I will definitely check it out!!! Thanks for the heads up!

I love to eat in the East Village when I am in NY. They have a lot of great ethnic cuisine, and it is usually more reasonably priced than a lot of the more touristy places.
http://www.veselka.com/
Veselka is one of my favorites. Not fancy at all, and open 24 hours. :)

We were in Times square looking for something quick and reasonably priced and happened upon this place a few blocks away
http://www.schnippers.com/
It's heart attack inducing type fast food :) but it sure was yummy and reasonably priced compared to other options in that area. And quick!

I got a kick out of seeing this because I lived a block from Veselka for almost 25 years. Great place to eat and people-watch!

If you make it to the Bronx Zoo (well worth the trip), have dinner at Zero Otto Nove on Arthur Avenue. One of the best Italian restaurants in the entire city and great atmosphere.
