NYC restaurants ??

I didn't read through all the answers but I suggest Carmine's if you like Italian food. I'm Italian myself and I loved the food. Very authentic. Try the calamari, yum!

I've heard there are over 20,000 restaurants in NYC, so there are lots to choose from.

Manhattan is also very large, so lots of travel could be involved.

Lots of tourists like to try
Pizza
Bagels
Jewish deli
Italian

The writer of this blog is a regular poster on Tripadvisor's nyc forums.
Lots of great info:

I believe he does food tours as well.

Many years ago my dh and I did a food tour in Greenwich village. It was fun and we aren't even tourists. We got lots of ideas of future restaurants to try.
If you were to do a tour like that, schedule it early in your trip, so you have time to go back and try different places.

Try anything in the Lower East Side/Little Italy/many parts of Brooklyn and I promise you that you will change your mind about the authenticity of Carmines ;) The food in Times Square is all overprices tourist traps...but I guess if you like Tony's in MK... ;)

(btw, I'm just giving you a hard time - welcome to the boards :) )

I didn't think Tony's was horrible! Not great but I liked the atmosphere and the service.

I'm originally from Queens. There are lots of great Italian restaurants there but I didn't suggest anything because really who wants to see Queens?

Thanks so much for all of the info! I will be there next week! Never Been!

I don't know if I'm excited or nervous! but at least I'll know where to eat. :rotfl:

Russ and Daughter's is my NYC MUST-do. It's not a restaurant, it's an appetizer shop that sells mostly smoked fish. But I like to go as soon as I arrive, and get enough bagel, lox, and schmear to have for breakfast every morning of my stay.
I recommend the Belly Lox, for a TRUE lox experience. Lox is not smoked salmon! Real Lox is cured in a salt brine, but Russ offers many different salmon options for your bagel!
And get a loaf of chocolate Babka while you're there!

We always enjoy Becco. It's owned by Lydia Bastianich and has wonderful Italian cooking. If I had a choice of where to sit I'd ask for a table out back or upstairs, only because the bar areas are LOUD. We love the food and the prices are better than most in NYC.

Not a fan of Carmine's. It's traditional red-sauce Italian, and it's served family style, so every dish is HUGE and meant for 3 or 4 to share. We found it limiting, we had leftovers but no fridge at the hotel so couldn't take them with us, and spent more than we'd anticipated.

We found the wait at Serendipity (over an hour) to be not worth the bother. Dunkin Donuts here at home does a chocolate coolatta that is very close to Serendipity's. We also made the mistake of ordering food, which was mediocre; when DD was 12 she made tastier versions of the very basic offerings, and hers never looked like it'd been sloppily thrown onto the plate, like the food at Serendipity.

Shake Shack? The burgers are paper-thin and cooked ALL the way through, and the milk shakes are just milk shakes. It reminds me a LOT of Steak-n-Shake. It wasn't bad, but I can't imagine being in NYC, with all it has to offer food-wise, and bothering with Shake Shack.

We liked Havana Central (just outside of Times Square). Big portions of Cuban food, and you won't choke on the prices. Also, the food served from Halal Guys carts over on 6th Ave, on the same side as Radio City Music Hall, is pretty good, especially for a "cheap" lunch that's on the healthier side.

I love Becco and Havana Central. Funny about Shake Shack because I love their burgers! I live in NYC and go all the time :-P

Their food is fine, it just reminds me of Steak-n-Shake, and if I'm in NYC, there are SO many other places to eat!

A couple of weeks ago we went to a place that's across the street and a block uptown from the DoubleTree Suites- maybe on the corner of 7th Ave and W 47th or W48th St. I can't remember the name, but you basically get to choose your protein, greens, veggies, and carb. They will make it either as a salad or do a stir-fry from the ingredients you choose (as well as having "standard" named combinations). It was a great option for us as we had both meat eaters and vegetarians in our group. It's fast-food; you order at one end, go down the cafeteria line telling them what you'd like to add to your bowl, and then it's served to you when you pay at the register. They had TONS of options: Proteins included beef, chicken, pork, smoked turkey, shrimp, salmon; carb choices included jasmine rice, brown rice, noodles, quinoa. It was a good choice for us for a fast, affordable supper before taking the night bus tour. I just wish I could remember the name of the place (there's a subway station right outside the door).
