NYC CRUISES PLANNING/INFO ThREAD!

I'm still baffled what to do about getting to the airport (JFK) post-cruise.

We (2 adults & a 5 year old) planned to use a car service, but it sounds like complete chaos trying to connect with your driver outside of the port. I'm not opposed to a taxi (just think the car would be more comfortable), but it sounds like lines for taxis can be 30-45 minutes long, which i wouldn't be anxious to do with an overtired 5 year old coming off a cruise.

Could any of you that have gone through debarkation and used public transportation give some advice/thoughts/recommendations? I'd really appreciate it; I really didn't think this would be a worry...usually we have no trouble getting to/from the airports in NYC!

We are likely to take a taxi to the port but get Disney transfer to the airport. They are more expensive but with three young kids it just seems easier than waiting for some other form of transportation.

I thought I read details specific to this cruise but now I can't find it anywhere. We are taking the 2 night cruise out of NYC and I remember, when booking, we got the second seating for dinner both nights.

Anyone know if the dress code is casual dress or semi-formal? Ties required? There are no dining details in my cruise documents so I'm not even sure what restaurants we are booked at. Are they dinner shows?

Thanks, Jen

I would not take public transportation with kids and luggage. I work for public transit here in NYC and one of the perks is free rides. I will NOT be riding the subway and/or bus to the port with all that stuff. We will be taking private car service.

I used a car service for both drop off and pick up. No problem finding the town car. I just told them Pier 88, Berth 2, that's where our ship docked on the June 10 cruise. We had a lot of luggage, as well as a wheelchair and a walker which would not have all fit into the taxi's trunk and interior space. I commute on mass transit daily to NYC. I couldn't imagine taking it home from a cruise, even though I have a monthly pass.

Someone reported that one of the nights was "dress up", but many did not follow the suggested dress. Ties are never "required" in the MDRs. They rotated through 2 of the MDRs for dinner, and the third for breakfast on the last morning of the cruise.

It's bad enough I'm underground driving trains 5 days a week. When I'm on vacation the last thing I want to see is a train. Car service it is! lol

But seriously, I see families with luggage and stuff on the subway and I just shake my head. It's not worth the hassle.

We did the taxi line after our 6/17 cruise. They had called 2 luggage tags when we disembarked so there were a lot of people to get off after us. We waited about 30 (very hot) min in a line which was a lot longer by the time we got to the front of the line. If I were doing it again and heading to the airport (esp if I had a 5 year old) I'd pay for disney transportation and just go that route.

hope this helps!

That's correct. The first night was Pirate Night (including fireworks), and dress was cruise casual. The second night was semi- formal, which I think took quite a few people by surprise, including us. Attire varied greatly. We did rotate between the 3 MDRs-- 2 dinners and debarkation breakfast.

Sorry...semantics...by public transportation, I meant a taxi. I would never try to take the subway to the airport on my own with a large shoulder bag (which is usually what I have with me during visits to NYC), much less with my son & a bunch of cruise luggage! What a fiasco that would be! :rotfl2:

I was just trying to explain that I usually use a car service, but because reports make it sound chaotic, I thought taxi might be a more effective option.

Yes! Very helpful! Thank you to Minnie Monellen too...both of you gave me just the information I was looking for! I appreciate you sharing your experiences!

Hi Suzi,

I'm a New Yorker, and everytime I fly home, I use NYC Airporter. I lived near a major attraction, but just make sure they drop you off close enough to the terminal. It's cheap and they've always done a great job. Make sure to give the driver a dollar or two per bag they get off the bus for you.

Where abouts in Manhattan do you get the NYC Airporter?

Approximately, how much time should we allow for getting to Newark Airport around 4pm on a Sunday (Long weekend) from Manhattan.

Figuirng getting off the ship and possibly doing the Statue of Liberty prior to heading to the Airport.

Any suggestions as to where to move our vehicles if we want to hang around NYC for the day post cruise?

I posted this awhile back (page 34 I think) it might be an option for post-cruise parking??? Look into parking at Port Imperial

A friend of mine was in NYC for the Fantasy christening and offered this option for parking - -

I have not experienced this myself, but trust this person totally!

Get off the turnpike at the last exit before the Lincoln tunnel and go to port Imperial. There is a ferry that takes you over across the river, about a ten minute ride and when you get there, there are cabs that will drive you right to the terminal. (about 4 blocks) Parking at Port Imperial is $10.00 day and the lot is secure. Just another option to throw out there.

Hi,

We just returned from the 6/17 Magic cruise. We had a late afternoon flight so were not worried about debarkation times. We have decided to cruise again on 9/7 and are looking at taking Amtrak home. Our best options seem to be a 10:15 AM or a 1:15 PM train out of Penn Station.

We are wondering if the 10:15 is a possibility if we carry off our luggage as per the early debarkation option (2 adults/ no kids)? Any information about the earliest time you were able to debark would be helpful.

Thank you.

Thanks for the info on the parking. Not sure if they run all day to get to the pier. I will be researching it.

anyone that have used dcl transfers....what time do they call disney transportation leaving the ship?

We were on the 6/22 cruise. They called the walk off people who intended to carry their own luggage around 7:00 AM I believe. We were the first colored tags to be called and we were called around 8:15
