Hello! :)

This may seem random...I usually only start threads on this board regarding my Disney Vacation...but since there are soooo many members on this board..I'm hoping that the odds are good that someone on here lives in the NW Indiana area and has information regarding their public schools/Special Education resources. Feel free to PM me! :) Thank you!

We aren't in NW Indiana, but we are close (in the Chicago area). Unfortunately, we are in a different state, but with our autistic son, we found that knowing the state laws and policies was very important and beneficial. Early on, the local school district was pushing back on certain placement/services/aids, but by knowing the state laws and policies, it greatly helped in getting him placed in the least restrictive environment that was appropriate for him. In the end, he has really blossomed with his new placement over the past two years, and the school district folks that we originally challenged in the placement meetings have become real believers in the approach we collectively took. It's been smooth sailing ever since.

Just a quick search on the Indiana State Board of Ed's website, it appears to have some good information:
http://www.doe.in.gov/exceptional/speced/welcome.html

On the right of the page, they have links to more information, with the "Laws, Rules & Interpretations" link probably being a good page to start:
http://www.doe.in.gov/exceptional/speced/laws.html

For example, the first link on the Laws page is a PDF version of their Special Education Rules (Article 7), and this is probably one of the most important documents to read:
http://www.doe.in.gov/exceptional/speced/docs/Art_7.pdf

A quick look at the rules document, you first need to convene a Case Conference Committee (which you may have already done) to determine the IEP needs, placement and services for your child. The CCC is defined on page 3 of the rules. It is very important to understand that the parents are MEMBERS of the CCC, not just bystanders, so the CCC cannot have an unanimous agreement without the agreement of the parents (i.e. you have just as much say as the others in the room)! Also, on page 45, it explains the parents' rights... a very good thing to know.

Hopefully, everything goes smoothly, and you are happy with the results of the CCC, but if things don't quite seem right to you for any reason, always ask questions. We heard things like "we've never done that before" and "we don't have the spots/resources." We would always ask things like "well, I understand that you have never done it that way before, but is there a law or policy that states that we cannot do it that way?" or "Could you please provide us a written notice as to why you are unwilling or unable to place him in the least restrictive environment?" You'll see on the parents' rights on page 45, they have to provide written notice upon request. Don't get me wrong, the school district has a tough job with trying to fit everyone in with the limited resources they have, but it's your job to fight for your child, not worry about the district's resources.

Hope this helps!
