Nutramigen formula vs high heat and humidity?

My son is on nutramigen powder formula, I am a bit worried about it getting too warm and humid and melting into a sticky mess. the packaging says to avoid ecessive heat. I am not planning on leaving it in a car or anything, but just in the diaper bag or stroller (out of the sun). anyone else use this formula in the parks?

also they do not make single serve packaging to my knowledge, so that is not an option.....

I'd get an insulated cooler bag and put it in that just to be on the safe side. They make ones that will keep things cool for up to 10 hours.

I have in the past put a serving of powder in small ziplock bags and then squeezed the air out. This is a handy way to carry it around then pour it into the bottle and mix with water. Should help with the clumping in the humidity.

If you are worried about the powder clumping due to humidity, do this.

Take a baggie, put some uncooked rice in it, seal it up, punch a few small holes in it, put the baggie in the nutramagin can. The rice absorbes any moisture.

DD was on that when I had mastitis. It's great stuff!

We used this with my daughter. I always used those proportioned Tupperware cups and kept it in an insulated lunch box. (Actually it was the smaller carrier that came with the breast pump but anything insulated should work.) I never had an issue with it but like you I was leery and heeded the side of caution.

I agree, use the individual proportioned containers you can buy (Tupperware, Munchkin brand...etc). They sell the cooler packs for things like that, although not sure how you'd freeze the inserts again if you didn't have a fridge. Maybe buy some of those crackable ice packs, Walgreens sells them. You crack them when you're ready to use them and they get really cold.

I've seen containers for medical stuff (insulin, other meds) that you can buy and it keeps stuff cold for hours as well. Maybe that would be an option if you could find a small pack. Here is what the reusable formula/cereal containers look like. They have them through Tupperware and Amazon...etc.

I guess if you really needed to, you could carry another resealable container and put some ice in it from the food court, get more throughout the park during the day if you needed it to keep it cold. You could put it in the bottom of your insulated cooler, and then I'd place a towel or burp cloth between it and the formula so you wouldn't 'freeze' it. When the ice started to melt just dump it out in a sink or sidewalk drain and ask a restaurant or cart for a cup of ice to refill your container.

The ice things at Walgreens weren't too expensive though....I'd just be sure to layer something between them and the formula powder though when placing it in your cooler/insulated bag.

DS was on Nutramigen too. When we went to WDW, I ordered nursette bottles (single-serve, ready to feed) and had them shipped from Enfamil to the resort. Although not inexpensive, it was so nice to have the convenience of having prepared formula whenever we needed it. Our insurance paid for his formula at home, so I could justify the splurge since vacation was the only time I had to pay for formula.

With the powder, I'd use one of those containers with the compartments for powdered formula. Just keep it in the diaper bag and it will probably be ok. Or perhaps put the formula container in a small insulated bag or lunchbox, inside your diaper bag. That should help keep it cool.

if you are really really worried then you could always ask to put it in a fridge in the first aid building. I had the kids formula out in hot days and I would always use the compartment containers by Munchkin - Target - and put it in an insulated bag that also held meds and whatnot.

Wow thank you for all the ideas. We will have a fridge in our room, and I will go the cooler route.... I dont know why I didnt think of it before, but this is our first big family trip and with 39 days out I am getting more than a little overwelmed with planning and organizing.... (read: I'm totally losing it here!)

I think dividing it up into preportioned tupperware and then sealing those in a ziploc in a cooler will be fool proof..... Will they give me any hassle at security with this?

I may price out some nursettes too.... although he takes 8 oz at a time so it may get cumbersome to carry 12 of these into the parks... dont they come in 2 oz sizes?

Nursettes come in two sizes, 2 oz and 6 oz.

I used those insulated bottle holders (that you can fit one regular baby bottle in). I could fit 2 nursette bottles in that holder, which was great because it kept them from being bumped around in the diaper bag (the 6 oz bottles are glass). I actually had two of those bottle holders, so I could easily fit 4 nursettes in my diaper bag.

Although DS might have normally taken 6 oz in a feeding, I found that he drank less in the parks because he was too busy taking in all the sights.

You might want to try out the nursettes before going. They have a slightly different smell (so I assume as slightly different taste) and texture. My daughter did fine on the powder, but not with anything that was premixed. It would be rough to get down their and THEN find out that your baby wouldn't drink it.

It shouldn't be that hot in march. When we went last September, we pre measured out 6oz worth of formula into a single serving ziplock and kept them in the diaper bag. What is the tempature range on canaster say? Excessive heat is usualy refering to above 120 degrees. I think you will be ok.

I don't see any reason you shouldn't be fine with it just in the segmented containers. DD took this at one point, but ended up on alimentium long term. WE never refigirated any powedered formula. We live in the south, and would take her out all day at times. It never got clumpy all day in the diaper bag, even when it was 90 out with 100% humidity, and we never had any problems. Your should be fine. If you are in doubt however, I believe you can order it in single serve pouches. Each puch has enough for 2 oz of formula.
