Nursing home decision

I hope everything works out for your family. This really will be the best for your mom and for your dad. Talk to the social worker often. They should be able to help you with all sorts of decisions.

Oh, sweetie I've been there. My mother did not have Alzheimer's but she was confined to a nursing home for the last 9 months of her life.

It is a heart wrenching decision to make but somtimes you just have to do what is best for the parent. In my mother's case, that meant becoming a resident of a nursing home. Sounds like you might be facing the same decision that I faced.

You have to keep your mother safe and you need to make sure she gets the best care possible. Visit the facility you are considering before you make the decision. Don't hesitate to move her to a different facility, if you don't believe she is being cared for appropriately.

If you place her in a nursing home, visit often and at different times of the day, to get an honest view of the care your mother will receive. A nursing facility is only as good as it's employees, make sure your mother has the best.

I know how much it hurts to have to do this, I always swore my mother would never be in a nursing home...but sometimes God has different ideas. You have to do what is best for your mother.

I am a nurse and deal with families quite regularly. I personally agree with a lot of the things that have been said here. Vist often and at differnt times of day. I also suggest visting website someone listed to check out any homes you are considering. I do know it isn't easy to place a loved one in a nursing home and most staff will be supportive to you. Another thing that I've seen work quite well for alz. pts. is a memory book with pictures of family, friends, favorite places to vist.
