Now that Disney owns Marvel would you be ok with

So why did they purchase the brand if they are limited to what they can do?

Because this limitation (not using the characters in FL theme parks) is minuscule, compared to the rest of their profit-making opportunities. Look at the box office performance of "The Avengers" and "Iron Man 3". Look at the DVD/Blu-Ray sales. TV broadcast rights. Merchandising. The Marvel comic book empire. Related TV shows for their own cable networks.

And having the characters at Universal isn't exactly causing Disney any financial pain. Remember, Universal is paying a Disney a very large sum of money for the right to use those characters.

Seeing Spiderman in the Electrical Parade?
Having a Xmen Float during the 3pm Parade?
Getting a Visit from Captain America and Mickey Mouse at Chefs Mickeys??

Im one of those people who no matter how hard I try I cannot get use to Marvel at Disney.
Well, first of all, Disney would never do any of those things ... any more than they would have Donald Duck and Thor share a M&G or have Snow White and the Jedis do a show with Loki.

Disney would never mix Marvel and Disney characters like that. They will live in their own worlds, with seperate attractions and show elements. If they did any sort of cross-over at all, it would be along the lines of how they use Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy during Star Wars Weekends.

Marvel isn't really "at" Disney -- at least not in Florida. And if you've seen the Iron Man attraction at Disneyland, you know how seamless and appropriate it can be. Putting Marvel at Disney isn't any stranger than putting Star Wars there, and no one seems to have an issue with that.

If Chris Helmsworth wanted to dress up at Thor and bring me drinks by the CSR pool every day I wouldn't be mad! :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

No, absolutely not. I died a little when the blog announced Thor yesterday for DL.

Also, Universal only has theme parks rights to the characters they're already using, plus a few ancillary characters. Marvel has an entire universe of other characters that Disney is free to use in the parks any way they'd like. For instance, if they wanted to create a stage show in Camp Minnie-Mickey that featured a duet between Donald Duck and Howard the Duck, they could. :)

This would be awesome! :cool1:

I totally want a Donald Duck dressed as Loki action figure. I want an Avengers Weekends at DHS. I want a dance off with the Marvel Stars show. Heck, I would settle for a character dinner at a resort as long as it's shwarma. ;):thumbsup2

They can do whatever they want, except where existing agreements preclude it--such as Marvel intellectual property being used by anyone other than Universal within a certain distance of UO. Clearly Disney believed Marvel was worth what they acquired it for, else they wouldn't have purchased it. There are other profit-making opportunities outside the theme parks (movies, for instance).

It's also the reason you don't see Spiderman in the Disney-produced movies- Sony already held the movie rights to that character. I think to get him back they would either have to wait until Sony's agreement expired, or buy them out.

1. But to me, and most casual fans like me, US got all the A listers.

2. Howard the Duck? How far down the alphabet do you have to go to categorize him? Is there something lower than Z. :rotfl:

Oh wait you are kidding right? :)

Howard the Duck? :lmao:

People studied the contracts sometime back and they interpreted the wording as that Disney couldn't use characters that Universal has or any groups that those characters are associated with. In other words, they can't use any member of the X-Men since Universal uses a few of them and they can't use any of the Avengers because Universal uses Captain America. If that's true, it really limits what they can use in WDW.

Pretty sure Alien Legion is available. :thumbsup2

1. That's the thing. All it takes is one hit movie to propel a character to prime time. And Disney has the ability to take Marvel's unknown characters and put them in the spotlight. If the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie is successful, suddenly there's a whole new set of A listers that Disney can exploit. Though with their close ties to Iron Man and The Avengers, it will be interesting to see if Disney will be able to use them in the Florida parks.

2. I was kidding. Somebody mentioned DAK earlier in the thread and it stuck in my mind. Then it occurred to me: In the 1970s, Disney threatened to sue Marvel because Howard the Duck looked too much like Donald. Then in the 1980s, Lucasfilm produced the Howard the Duck movie. Now, Disney owns them both. :)
