November/December WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Frank - Hope that 20-miler went ok!

Joan - Ugh, 8 on the TM? I maxed out at 10 and anything over 45 min darn near kills me!

Mauara - Congrats ont eh 5K!

We did our 18-miler Saturday. 29 and just breezy for teh first 1/3. Got windier at teh end, but it was more to our back. The worst part was teh snow/slush ice on teh path. Not enough to keep us from being out but enough to be miserable. Too long of a run for Yak Traz, though.

I was told by a friend yesterday, though, to take some old shoes adn put 3 hex screws in teh toe adn 2 in the heal for longer LRs. Might eb worth a try!

Have fun on that LR Frank.

Thanks though fun isn't the word choice I would go with.

Frank - Hope that 20-miler went ok!

Well, I just got back and it wasn't bad. It snowed the whole time and was 11 degrees with wind chill by the end but I felt pretty good. The footing was a bit rough at times for a long run but there really wasn't any really slippery ice so all in all I'll take it. The time wasn't what I would look for but considering the footing and weather I'm happy with it.

On the plus side I managed to ice the legs during the run so no need to do it now. :goodvibes

On more than one occasion in the winter I have come back from a run, pushed up the legs of my tights (or taken them off-but I have running briefs on underneath, so no flashing!) and just sat in the snow. Funny thing is, my DH did not think it was crazy!

Maura

Frank - COngrats on teh 20-miler!!DH adn I calculate that you put abotu 30% extra effort in under those conditions.

Maura - :scared1:You are hard core! I can barely convince myself to sit in a tub of cool water.

Swim class last night. She killed me. We had to do 100 IMs followed by 25 free 3 times. That's 75 meters of butterfly! :scared1:

Had yoga this am. Told my instructor my body was actually doing pretty good. She killed me too. Next time I'm going to make up pains.

Funny, my mom recently told me that my 13 YO niece does teh 200 IM. That's 50 straight meters of butterfly! :scared1: Now, she's this itty bitty thing. Only in teh 1 percentile for height adn 5 for weight (muscle from swimming skew this big time). I cannot comprehend that seh can do it fro 50 meteres, when I can barely do 25. :sad2: (And, yes, I am darn proud of her!)

Frank! WTG big time on those 20 miles! I was thinking of you at the gym last night. When did you go out? While doing the ellip and later the TM I kept glancing at the clock wondering if you were back in the warmth yet :) Congrats on those miles!

Maura - Woohooo on the 5K!!! I have to read the report but I'm guessing you did very very well. :thumbsup2 :cheer2:

Joan!!!! Thanks for the reminder that we have the discount there. I was just looking at shoes last night. I'm in need of a new pair. Thanks!!!!

Carrie -- WTG on the swim and the following yoga!!! I always laugh at the classes when the instructor asks how such and such went and they are all like it's ok. HA! Next she says well we'll just do another 20. I just shake my head and carry on, they never learn. Same goes for the personal instructor. LOL

Carrie you weren't alone on Saturday though I didn't have ice/slush. Just really chilly. 18 miles down around the house. We made up a new course. DH did 11 miles with me then I had 7 on my own and ICK! At mile 15 since I was walking he brought me a sweatshirt. It was after dark and windy on certain streets. But 18 miles done. Not the fastest time but they are done.

As mentioned, did the gym last night. Doing the ellip machine 1st makes it so much better! I'm able to keep a faster stride per minute. Tonight I'm going to bundle up and try for 6 miles. If Frank can do 20 *shiver, wince, shiver* I going to try and *shiver, wince, shiver* suck it up and *shiver, wince, shiver* do my scheduled 6 miles. *shiver* (we need a frozen smiley for this time of year)

Stay warm!!!! Safe footing!!!

Carie- I'll take the extra 30%, that makes it a 26 mile run. :thumbsup2 I will be looking into a triathlon-focused swim class next year. I'm both looking forward to it and dreading it.

Maura- No sitting in the snow for me but if it were a little deeper I might have had to give it a try. I walked gingerly up the driveway because I really didn't want to manage 20 miles in the snow and then fall walking up my driveway with under 2 inches of snow on it. I could totally see that happening.

Diane-
I went out at about 7:30-7:45 or so and it took me just over 2:30 (2:31 something). As for winter running appropriate smileys, here is what I found:

Frank - if I an do it....I tend to be last in class. like I am in small tri's. I feel better knowing that my instructor knows that I can go forever. Anyway, even on bad days, it helps. What doesn't kill us, will only make us stronger. ;)

Diane - Eliptical too? You rock. I liek the idea of anything that makes teh TM feel better, though. HOpe teh cold 6 went well! Just remeber to call it quits if you ever feel cold on the inside.

Still trying to figure out how to clean house adn run this week. Can't eblieve I finally have a5-day work week (first time in 9 months) and it fell when I had a busy weekend and my parents are coming this weekend. Ugh. I think it'll be clenaing as XT this week.

So I never said I could sit for very long in the snow!!

Carrie If cleaning counts as XT (and I belive it does) then painting does too. I am painting my kitchen and living thru the h__l that is painting the ceiling. Something about painting ceilings makes me physically ill. I find myself painting in all sorts of contorted positions-many of which remind me of yoga!

Frank I like the smileys. Just don't want to have to use them while I'm in FL next week!

Need to get out tonight to yoga. This particular class kicks my butt--which is one of the poses but I can't do it. ;)

Maura

I googled "kick my butt yoga pose" and clicked images..not sure which pose you are talking about, but it looked like it could be several :lmao:
Go ahead, I know you guys want to google it too.

Brrr all this talk about running in the snow, and cold. I am such a wimp, but that comes from living in the south I guess. I went out last Saturday and the 50s I started out with a fleece jacket and long yoga pants, and gloves. My hands get cold really easy. It has been either in the 20's in the mornings or low 40's and tonight 35 when I got off work. I have not been out in those temps so I really don't know how I will feel once I get warmed up.

I have been doing my indoor walking, (I use a gazelle and do Wi Fit running, biking, hula and the step, then do some of the stretching and yoga). I did 30 minutes last night on the gazelle doing speed intervals. I did 2 miles in the 30 minutes. Stretched, and stretched some more. Today, my calves are sore and tight feeling. Not my shins or the sides of the calves but the deep down muscle.

Guess I need to do some more stretching tonight when I do the regular leg exercises that I do for quad strengthening and for my feet.

Cindy

I'm right with you. I grew up in Wisconsin, and live in KY now. I don't like running in the cold either.

Mike

Just got back from doing 8 (8.09 actually). The temps crept back into the 40's (barely) so I was able to get out there in shorts and short sleeves and man it makes a difference. It was one of my better runs in a long time.

Nice Frank
I was pleased that the temps skipped into the 50's so I put on my long pants, a long sleeve shirt and fleece shirt and went our and did 4.5 miles. So nice to be outside.

Things I learned on my run today....

Snowy and 30 can be pleasant running weather

I will make every effort, when driving, to slow down for runners and walkers so as not to spray them with slush

My preferred type of road condition to run on--in decreasing order of desirability--are: dry road, wet road, packed snow, loose snow, slush, packed slush, ice

10.2 miles on a snowy day can feel like a lot more.

Robert Frost wrote a lovely poem, and I'm glad I had to memorize it in grade school

Off to run at Disney tomorrow.....

Maura

Can't believe it has been a week since some one posted here.
First, the WISHD code for Running Warehouse didn't work.
Next, tonight I finally made it out for my Christmas light run. My girls went with me and we did about 4 miles. The weather was nice, clear skies and 40F. It was pretty and peaceful.
This week we travel ad I will do a little crosstraining...skiing and snowshoeing.
Hope everyone has a safe and joyful holiday.

Maura - I agree with all tha tyou said 100%!

Joan - Oh no! I think it's been about a year since I used it. WOnder if it needs to be reactivated. I think Chimera set it up. WIll check.

So, we decided to stay home to run because the path looked like hard pack. AMybe a little icier than our 18-miler. OMG, bad choice. The first 2.5 miles were hard pack coverd in ice. Ouch! Then, we were on raods that were ok for about 3 miles (2.5 of that would not be repeated ont eh way back). 5.5 to 8 were ok. Just about a half inch of snow that caused a bit of slip. 8 to 10 were bad to he$$-ish. I walked about a half mile and still slipped several times. 10 to 10.5 was up a bridge, around a corbener and down a very steep hill. None of it was close to runable. On teh downhill, I was awaslking and still fell on my hands and knees.

Only had to get to 11.5 and we could head home, though, due to some added distance early. That was the hardest 1.5 ever. My legs hurt from staying upright. EVen walking the iced over hard pack was killing me. Got to 11.5 and I was doubting. Praying for a gentle sign on whtehr to continue after 14, as we had a car parked there. Was wakling teh half mile before the car and slipped. Caught myself but it hurt. Told dh it hurt and he said we were done. It qas 18 with teh windchill. 24 with 15 to 25 mph wind to start and 30 mph gust. Was closer to LAke MI at the 11.5 miel mark so winds were worse. I had decided we had to take roads fro teh last 2.5 miles, if we went on, a s I could not even walk that by then. Well, it would have been dark by tehn, adn I will not do winter roads in teh dark, no matter how reflective I am (at least not the 55 mph one) and i wa snot reflective. So, we called it quits. Good thing as my back hurt from teh near falls and every muscle from teh hip down hurt from teh ice over hard pack. Picture a road 10x's rougher than AK walks covered with ice adn you get the picture. So, I know we put in close to 18 miles of effort and I know we'll be ok. Still....

On a happy note, this is the first year that an injurt has not sidelined me. EVen better, I should be going for my 3rd massage soon and I have no need for it. Bless my yoga instructor!

Just used the discount on Running Warehouse last night.

Beyond that, um... nothing. *shrug*

Stay healthy!!!! If your leaving for the holiday(s) have a great time!!!!

I just checked the code and it worked. I also noticed that you can now use it on Mizuno items which used to not be the case.

I've got my second 20 miler tonight after work and then the longest run I have left is 12. I feel ready and with how hectic this month has been I am counting down the days until the trip.
