I still use film......And FYI - all Fugi film is the BEST for outside shots, esp, of the sky - it is much more vibrant than the other bands...

We purchased a Sport Diver II Land and Sea Camera - cased to 104 feet 0 which will suit me fine. I am still not ready to go digital.....I visit the used camera shop on occasion to se if there are any lenses I must have before I must buy them at an antique mall.

One day closer to cruising....I have begun writing 30 postcards to kids I do not know.....Being less than imaginative at times, I have 5 scenes and will adjust the message to the scene. I also have the Atlas, I promised DisNurse I would purchase many, many posts ago....It is an enlarged version, so some smaller towns will not be listed, but I thought it would be easier with the main roads for the youngsters.....

Last night - I drug DH o the fabric ship (not really - he was willing to go) to look at material for his pirate costume, we needed a sash......Remnants to the rescue.....sewing again soon.

That is all CRUISE related for now....but no storm warnings for us, they were lifted....Now we can get back to normal. The water has been high so we cannot use lots due to flooding - we are on septic system.....

We booked $59 each way airfare to Orlando so we don't have to torture ourselves with the drive down again! It was almost as cheap as buying gas anyway!
Haley woke up covered in little spots - roseola says the ped. The excitement here never ends!!!!

But, you are risking the loss of your techno-geek status if you use a film camera!!! Seems like a good deal on those, though. Maybe I'll pick one up for the kids to abuse - don't have to worry about them dropping it in the water.

Sorry, but if it helps my techno-geek status any my affinity for the analog camera goes back to my days as high school newspaper photographer...

Dis nurse pack your camera and film in your carry on bag. The xray machine at the airport will mess up the film.

You will also want to get a special Film bag that is lead lined!

The only film I will be carrying on will be in the disposable waterproof cameras. Do I still need a special lead bag? I have flown lots of times with my other film camera (carry on) and never had a problem. Just lucky, I guess?

Any particular precautions with digital cameras? The darned thing is soooo tiny that if nothing else I am afraid of dropping it!

OOOOOhhhhh! You all need to follow the thread "Magic Changes"....the most recent update as to what to expect. I am a little concerned.....the first post dry-dock people (according to their cruise docs just received) can expect NO FITNESS FACILITY! Apparently they won't be done yet with the changes in there! OUCH! I just gotta exercise if i am eating all that yummy food! I never take a day off at home...even sacrifice precious sleep on work days to attend a 5:45 am spin class.
Other changes in our favor.....maybe some different and more healthy food choices at Scoops.

Just an FYI on the film issue. Any unused film CAN be packed in the regular suitcases, it will be fine and when you take pictures using it, they will come out great. If it has been exposed (used) it needs to go in your carry on. You only need the lead bag for film speeds of 1000 or greater, and I doubt anyone going to the Caribbean will be shooting at that speed. You can also always ask for hand inspection instead of going through the X Rays, but they get cranky with this because they know that the X Rays aren't strong enough to damage anything.

dh got me a new digital for my bday. for traveling i bought a small hard shell carrying case that will fit inside my backpack. when i'm using it though i usualy just have it in my fanny pack (if i let it hang from my neck i forget about it, lean over to help the kids with something and WHACK! they get smacked in the forehead with it ). i've always put my disposable cameras into the lead liners when flying (but then i'm paranoid that if anyone can get their film ruined it will be me!).

princesshayleysmom-well at least she waited till you got home! congrats on the airfare! so much nicer than a long drive with a little person (mine either complain they are car sick or sleep all then way and wake up to bounce all night!).

lord sheffields called us today to get our credit card for deposit (was begining to wonder why they had'nt called me back)-their phone systems been down for a couple of days! but we are booked and realy looking forward to it.

going to get it together and buy my travel insurance today-if i don't someone will get sick or injured (on the last night of last years alaskan cruise it occured to me "this is the first family vacation we've ever had with noone getting sick, no scraped knees..." an hour later i got rear-ended by a luggage cart ). so i'm taking no chances-i may send the kids to school in surgical masks the last week that will just leave the tickets for wdw to order. we're going to go ahead and pop for the 10 day park hoppers with no expiration-we will only use 5 days worth on this trip, but we can save the other 5 for sometime down the road (ends up saving us quite a bit ).

I got a hand out at the Orlando airport a few years ago when the high frequency x rays started and I did what it said and all of my film and pictures were fine. Disposables are iffy anyway...maybe there was a problem with the disposables? I don't know, but they couldn't go around telling people their pictures and film will be fine if they won't.

Part of the problem is that one x-ray may not zap the film, but several might - they do not tell you that....And the machine may not be set to specs, which is what the pamphlete was based on.

Airport Baggage Scanning Equipment Can Jeopardize Your Unprocessed Film
Because your pictures are important to you, this information is presented as an alert to travelers carrying unprocessed film. New FAA-certified (Federal Aviation Administration) explosive detection systems are being used in U.S. airports to scan (x-ray) checked baggage. This stronger scanning equipment is also being used in many non-US airports. The new equipment will fog any unprocessed film that passes through the scanner.

The recommendations in this document are valid for all film formats (135, Advanced Photo System [APS], 120/220, sheet films, 400 ft. rolls, ECN in cans, etc.).

Suggestions for Avoiding Fogged Film
X-ray equipment used to inspect carry-on baggage uses a very low level of x-radiation that will not cause noticeable damage to most films. However, baggage that is checked (loaded on the planes as cargo) often goes through equipment with higher energy X rays. Therefore, take these precautions when traveling with unprocessed film:

Don't place single-use cameras or unprocessed film in any luggage or baggage that will be checked. This includes cameras that still have film in them.

If an attendant or security personnel informs you that your carry-on baggage must be stowed with the checked luggage or go through a second scan, remove your unprocessed film.

Have your exposed film processed locally before passing through airport security on your return trip.

If you're going to be traveling through multiple X-ray examinations (more than 5 times), request a hand search of your carry-on baggage. FAA regulations in the U.S. allow for a hand search of photographic film and equipment if requested. (See below for further FAA information.) However, non-US airports may not honor this request.

Request a hand inspection for all motion imaging origination films. Testing shows fog on motion imaging films even after a single X-ray scan. This increased fog flattens the entire toe region of the sensitometric curve reducing shadow detail in a telecine or projected image. However, Explosive Trace Detection instruments provide no risk to motion picture films and can be used in conjunction with hand inspection to provide a non-destructive method of motion film inspection.

If you're asked to step aside for a more thorough scan of your carry-on baggage, the film could be harmed if they use the more intense X-ray equipment.You should take your unprocessed film out of your luggage.

Lead-lined bags, available from photo retailers, will weaken the X-radiation on film and reduce potential harm. However, the effectiveness of any particular lead bag depends on the intensity and electric potential of the X-ray generator, the lead's thickness, and the film speed. If you use a lead bag, check with the manufacturer for the effectiveness of their products with airport X-ray devices. The inspection process may be triggered by a lead bag on the scanner screen. In a typical airport surveillance situation, the baggage may be pulled aside for additional inspection.

Consider shipping unprocessed, unexposed or exposed film through an expedited carrier, but first check with the carrier to determine what package examination procedures they are using.

Be polite, helpful and patient. Please remember that security personnel are trying to protect the traveling public.

The FAA provides air travelers in the United States the right to request a non-X-ray inspection of photosensitive products (FAA Reg. 108.17-AIRPLANE OPERATOR SECURITY). Remember that this only applies to air travelers in the United States.



NOTE: X rays from airport scanners don't affect digital camera images or film that has already been processed, i.e. film from which you have received prints, slides, KODAK PHOTO CD Discs, or KODAK Picture CDs.

I just spoke with Disney about the dining situation. She put us down as waitlisted for the early seating and if we don't get it, we will have the 8PM. She said they finalize dining 2 weeks prior to sailing and that I should call back and see what is going on then!
