To be honest, I didn't read every post in this thread. I skimmed through most of them, and as far as I can tell, I see nothing new. I've pretty much read it all before. I've heard this argument since I started playing more than 2 years ago. A few times I've chimed in my opinion, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't really matter. People believe what they want to believe.
When Inferno was released through Disney Movie Rewards, I was flooded with messages asking for my thoughts. I answered only those who know me. And even then, they already knew how I felt about it. For the most part though, I've avoided answering this topic. I didn't care to get mixed up in the craziness I knew would follow. I think it's sort of calmed down, and there's a number of things I do want to comment on now.
I feel that players are a big part of the trading issues. I notice that a lot of the players who complain about "rare" being released are the same players who complain that VMK should release the "rare" so everybody has a chance to get them. But who determines what is "rare" to begin with? The players do. Once upon a time, there was such a thing as "rare". Beta items that were never released had limited quantities throughout the game. Things like Inferno, were "rare" because we knew how limited their release was.
But today, how is "rare" defined? If you haven't searched the forums and lurked in trade rooms, you might find the answer surprising. Little groups of players set the prices. They determine what is rare and what is not. How? A few ways. They start a rumor of an item being released soon. Or having been released in some way. Half the time people are smart enough to think before joining the bandwagon and the rumor dies. But the other half the time... Well, I'm sure most of you have seen the results. Another way is a group of players decide something should be rare. The green backwards cap for example. Dig deep enough and you'll find out the truth. See, I never thought the cap was rare because it took me 1 try and a couple buyables to get it when I first started. So it got me curious when suddenly players are going around practically asking for inferno for it. Turns out some players had a few on their hands they wanted to get rid of, and wanted to get more than their money's worth for them. Newer players believed it. Enough players believed it. So it became so. But how many people stopped to think... Once word got out that it was "rare", how many "trading green flip" threads popped up? Hmmm...
But you know what? That's okay. More power to those players. Why? Because they are working the market to their advantage. And that's how trading is. Trading is a game of chance. You take a chance in getting a good deal that you will profit from later. You take a chance that you will give a lot only to see your item lose value a few days later. You take a chance that you can build an inventory that will keep your trades flowing day after day. That's how trading works. People whine and cry about it but that's how it works. You win some. You lose some. It's the way it is. If you don't like it, don't do it.
People think I can say this because of what I have. I can tell you in the 2 years I've played this game, I am not ahead. I've pretty much broken even. For every rare item I've acquired, I've done 3 bad trades. Either given more than something is worth (find that out after the fact), or traded a huge amount for something that was released in quantity a few days later. But I'm not going to cry about it. I knew the risks and took the chance.
The whole idea of making everything equally available...that is just absurd. Remember the original tagline of this game: "Be the envy of the kingdom." Think about whose game this is...Disney. They're all about collectibles. That's part of the game. It's a challenge, and it should be. Like real life pin trading or whatnot.
When inferno was released, yeah I had a quick...dang!...reaction. But it passed as quickly as it came. I always knew there would come a day that inferno would be as common as fireworks. How many 50+ item trades did I do for my pins? More than I can remember. And all of it down the drain in a matter of seconds. But it didn't matter. I knew one day it would happen. My offer for the green staff shirt...dead. I bet all my infernos on doing that trade and now it was worthless. But that's the risk you take. That's what trading is all about.
There will always be something rare. There will always be something the majority is demanding. VMK releases a few new items every month and takes a few items away every month. New players join every day. Players like myself obtain certain objects (in my case inferno and red crates) and never trade them off again. All these factors add to the values. The market changes...sometimes drastically. And there's really not much you can do about since, for the most part, it's the players who cause these changes.
Trading is part of this game. To me, it's like any other mini-game. There are some rules. There are certain ways to play. And there's definitely always other players who are better at it. I simply just play the game and while I'm at it, try my best to have fun. That's all there is.
