Not All Treasure Is Silver And Gold, Mate - *Update 9-17* P60

Otherwise known as the funniest experience I have ever had at tea.

Ever.

All thanks to my father in law and my husband. My son, oddly enough, was better behaved than the two of them combined. And it's not that they were bad, persay. It's that they were absolutely hilarious.

To understand this, you've got to picture two grown men, both of whom look extremely Italian and I would say pretty masculine, sticking their pinkies out while drinking tea, making jokes about the size of the portions, pretending to nibble daintily on their sandwiches.

If it hadn't been the Grand Floridian, I would have been on the floor rolling with laughter. As it was, I laughed as heartily as was permissible (and sometimes not), trying to remain upright in my chair, which was quite difficult. I'm almost positive they had me laughing so hard I cried.

My favorite picture of my FIL and my husband comes from this tea. My FIL is smiling and my husband is laughing, and that to me, is absolutely priceless. It's a candid moment I was able to catch and it means so much to me. My husband's parents are divorced. Without getting into details, let's say that it was not amicable. And that for many years, my husband did not speak to his father.

When we were pregnant with our first son, I told my husband, look. I know you have these issues with your Dad, but I am not the type of person to withhold a child from someone. It's his first grandchild, and no matter how you feel about him, our son deserves the right to know him.

So, after DS was born, we invited my FIL to come down and visit. And he jumped at the chance. Our first visits were awkward, I won't lie. It was almost as if we had to get to know each other all over again.

Let me tell you what a blessing that was.

My father in law has become part of my core family group. He is there for every event you invite him to, always ready to help us however he can, and always thrilled to be spending time with you. I think after so many years of little or poor contact with his children (my husband is one of four), that he is just so grateful to be part of our lives, and to be included.

It's one of the reasons I like inviting him to Disney World. It's giving him a piece of something that, I don't know...you just can't create anywhere else. I guess, it's giving him a piece of our magic. I can't tell you how many ways he deserves it, how wonderful he is, and how much I love him.

And, how grateful I am to my DS for bringing us all together.

So when I get that snapshot of that one moment in time, of that true memory, of that pure laughter, it brings tears to my eyes. It reminds me of what a gift we are to each other, and how happiness is all what you make of it. Or, one as Walt said in one of my favorite every Disney quotes,

"Happiness is a state of mind. It all depends on how you look at things."

Next Chapter

It sounds like such a wonderful experience having tea with the family like that. How wonderful that they were able to put their differences aside and make up! I think it makes such a difference in the kids lives. It would have been truly horrible for your DS not to know his grandfather.

What a great memory and great sentiments to share!!! I always look fondly back at our time waiting to get into the tea and talking with you and your mom! It was a very enjoyable afternoon!!! I'm glad you had so much fun, happiness, and laughter at your tea that day!!!!!!! :cool1::banana:

what a wonderful wonderful update! It had me smiling as I read it, picturing your swarthy men, daintily drinking their tea. Thank you for the very vivid picture in my head and all the context behind it. Definitely a moment you will never forget.

Because I've met your DH - I can just imagine how pee in your pants funny this tea was!

What a great update! So glad you were able to wade through those awkward first visits and forge a new and better relationship!!!

What a great update! I can just picture it in my head. How is your pregnancy coming along? Are you having problems with your blood pressure? (It was you that was on bed rest for that and not someone else right?)

I love this story!!! Can you imagine how it will be in a few years when you have all four of your boys partaking in this tea experience? :lmao:

I agree whole-heartedly. I'm very blessed to have my FIL be such an integral part of our lives.

I"m so glad you got to meet my Mom. It feels more tangible that certain DISers know her, almost like...I don't know, sounds silly, but I'm not making up how wonderful she was, you know?

My swarthy men! :lmao:

I only laugh because it's true.

Awww, what a wonderful memory you have of that tea. :goodvibes

I do, and it was so much fun, and neither my mother nor I could have predicted it.

Because I've met your DH - I can just imagine how pee in your pants funny this tea was!

Heidi, there are things that I couldn't even write in this chapter because they're not fit for the DIS. (When we meet I'll have to tell you.)

What a great update! So glad you were able to wade through those awkward first visits and forge a new and better relationship!!!

Me, too! Thank you.

What a great update! I can just picture it in my head. How is your pregnancy coming along? Are you having problems with your blood pressure? (It was you that was on bed rest for that and not someone else right?)

Hi, hon! Glad to see you popping in here!

I'm doing well, thank you. I had high blood pressure, but we really think it was due to the stress of my mother being ill and her passing. This past Tuesday I had a normal reading, and so I haven't been put on bed rest.

I have an ultrasound on Monday, and as long as everything looks good from that, ie baby's growth is okay, etc, I can continue working. :thumbsup2

What a wonderful moment on your trip :goodvibes

We had so many wonderful moments, but this ranks as one of the funniest.

I love this story!!! Can you imagine how it will be in a few years when you have all four of your boys partaking in this tea experience? :lmao:

Oh, Jackie! God help me! :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

It's comments like that that make me excited for the adventure I have in store for me. :goodvibes

It's going to be fabulous fun having a houseful of boys! I always wanted lots of boys, but I am more than happy with having one of each. :goodvibes However, I will be living vicariously through some of your adventures. :thumbsup2

All caught up with your TR and wanted to tell you a few things.

#1 - I feel blessed to read about your family. Your bond with your Mom and the whole group is heartwarming to read and although I was so sad to read about your Mom's passing, I felt so lucky to even know her through what you have chosen to share. For that I thank you. The poem you wrote that you found is actually what I read at my Grandmother's funeral in 1987. It made my heart skip at first and then caused all these memories that have been buried for a long time to surface and I smiled at some of her antics that I had not thought of in quite some time. You give a gift through your writing and I appreciate it.

#2 Thanks for getting "it." "It" being what we should all have as priorities when at WDW or in our own homes. "It" being what is important and what is not and why so much is lost in our daily lives because rushing here and there and counting the last penny in the bank seems to be so important to so many.

Rather, "it" is the importance of the sound of love when you just sit with your child on your lap and hear his heart beat as he rests against you watching the sun set or the crowds go by. "It" is the words loud and clear when you see a smile on your parents face and yet no words have been uttered.

You are a great person and you will pass on that greatness to your children as it has been obviously passed on to you and they will be people who people like being around just because of who they are not what they have or can give. Just for being them.

That is a rarity these days and a true value no money can ever buy.

Thanks and I look forward to more.

Glad to hear that all is well with your newest wee pirate. I Have a question for you regarding my trip. Did you bring your stroller for your son on this last trip? I am debating if I should bring it or not. My dd will be 5 (her bday is in Aug) when we go. I know she won't be in it the whole time but I really don't want to pay Disney prices to rent one if we need it.

That sounds like a wonderful memory, and I bet that picture is amazing!!!! If you haven't already, that sounds like a great picture to blow up in black and white and frame for Father's Day!!!!

It was such a pleasure to meet you and your mom -- robes and all! And you looked great! I think you had just had your hair cut before the trip and it looked awesome even post massage. I have to agree with you that my pedicure wasn't quite up to the OPI standard that I have found here at home. But it was nevertheless very relaxing and I loved exploring the Grand Floridian. Next on my list is to try the Mandara Spa at the "Swolphin".. have you ever tried that one?

You guys were just a few tables away at tea but I don't recall any shenanigans. So if your DH and FIL were causing antics, they weren't evident to the rest of us. :)

That's the kind of update, TK, that I keep coming back for more of here amongst my friends!! Nothing more precious or wonderful than laughter shared with family- and even better, reconciled family, at that!! :thumbsup2

I'm sure there will be much fodder for adventurous tales. :thumbsup2

Thank you. I am glad that through reading this you can understand how special she was to me. As a matter of fact, she still is! And I'm glad that I was able to bring back some happy, if bittersweet memories for you as well.

There's no greater gift as writer than compliments like those you just paid me, and I thank you!

You know, I got "it" on this trip, but I must say that my mother's passing has really reshifted all of my priorities.

Things that used to bother me just don't anymore. And I place a whole new value on what's really important. If there is one thing that I have learned from her death (and I'm sure there's many more to come) that would be it.

You are a great person and you will pass on that greatness to your children as it has been obviously passed on to you and they will be people who people like being around just because of who they are not what they have or can give. Just for being them.

Oh, god bless you. I can't begin to tell you what your kind words mean to me. I thank you again. I am very blessed by my family, and the wonderful support I've found here on the DIS.

Thanks and I look forward to more.

We're just getting started! :lmao:

Short answer: bring it. I highly recommend you take the stroller. My son was about 4.5, and even though he didn't use it all the time, sometimes they just get tuckered out and it's so helpful to have your own stroller that they can sit or even lay down in. You won't regret it. There's nothing worse than having to carry a 45+ pound child through 80+ degree weather with humidity. Trust me. ;)

That sounds like a wonderful memory, and I bet that picture is amazing!!!! If you haven't already, that sounds like a great picture to blow up in black and white and frame for Father's Day!!!!

Great suggestion! I happen to have done that last year, but you make me think I should really get one framed for our house!

I have never tried the Mandara Spa, but I'm very interested in it. Wondering also if it's any better than the one at the Grand Flo, I think their offerings are more extensive at the Swolphin, no?

I am shocked that you couldn't tell what was going on at my table, although I think some of it may have happened after you departed. But seriously, it was crazy. :lmao:

Makes it all the more special! Glad to peak your interest.

Well, dang.

I can't get photobucket to work and pictures are sort of integral to the next few updates.

Alright, I'm going to try restarting the computer and see if that helps. :confused3

I'm assuming the tea picture in Facebook is where this tea scenerio comes from? LOL, I probably would have gone ahead and laughed heartily.

But that's just me.
