Otherwise known as the funniest experience I have ever had at tea.
Ever.
All thanks to my father in law and my husband. My son, oddly enough, was better behaved than the two of them combined. And it's not that they were bad, persay. It's that they were absolutely hilarious.
To understand this, you've got to picture two grown men, both of whom look extremely Italian and I would say pretty masculine, sticking their pinkies out while drinking tea, making jokes about the size of the portions, pretending to nibble daintily on their sandwiches.
If it hadn't been the Grand Floridian, I would have been on the floor rolling with laughter. As it was, I laughed as heartily as was permissible (and sometimes not), trying to remain upright in my chair, which was quite difficult. I'm almost positive they had me laughing so hard I cried.
My favorite picture of my FIL and my husband comes from this tea. My FIL is smiling and my husband is laughing, and that to me, is absolutely priceless. It's a candid moment I was able to catch and it means so much to me. My husband's parents are divorced. Without getting into details, let's say that it was not amicable. And that for many years, my husband did not speak to his father.
When we were pregnant with our first son, I told my husband, look. I know you have these issues with your Dad, but I am not the type of person to withhold a child from someone. It's his first grandchild, and no matter how you feel about him, our son deserves the right to know him.
So, after DS was born, we invited my FIL to come down and visit. And he jumped at the chance. Our first visits were awkward, I won't lie. It was almost as if we had to get to know each other all over again.
Let me tell you what a blessing that was.
My father in law has become part of my core family group. He is there for every event you invite him to, always ready to help us however he can, and always thrilled to be spending time with you. I think after so many years of little or poor contact with his children (my husband is one of four), that he is just so grateful to be part of our lives, and to be included.
It's one of the reasons I like inviting him to Disney World. It's giving him a piece of something that, I don't know...you just can't create anywhere else. I guess, it's giving him a piece of our magic. I can't tell you how many ways he deserves it, how wonderful he is, and how much I love him.
And, how grateful I am to my DS for bringing us all together.
So when I get that snapshot of that one moment in time, of that true memory, of that pure laughter, it brings tears to my eyes. It reminds me of what a gift we are to each other, and how happiness is all what you make of it. Or, one as Walt said in one of my favorite every Disney quotes,
"Happiness is a state of mind. It all depends on how you look at things."
