Talks end between Northwest, Mechanics union

By Michelle Martinez
Aug. 03, 2005 2:47 PM

Talks broke off Wednesday between Northwest Airlines Corp. and its Mechanics union, increasing the chances of a strike.

The union can strike anytime after the federally mandated 12:01 a.m. Aug. 20 deadline. Northwest has said it would continue to fly in the event of a strike.

Do they have any other options :rotfl2:

Personally, there are time I firmly belive management is not being totally honest and this would be one of those times! I would at least expect some flights to be cancelled!

I would feel a bit uncomfortable flying NWA with "scab" mechanics working on the planes......

I am glad my SIL is coming home on the 19th from DC.

NWA management has been natorious for screwing the little guys while the upper management has received bonuses. It is time to restructure that entire company.

They have also screwed the State of Mn over labor contracts that were supposed to stay in state and they never followed through.....

I will fly Sun Country out of MSP, thank you.

"Scab" or not, they have to be FAA certified to work on the planes. The FAA keeps a VERY close eye on airlines at times like this. You are just as safe now as you will be then. These "scabs" probably already work on the planes. NW and other airlines use contract services at thier smaller airports (like Nashville for NW). Those guys work on the same planes as the Union guys in Minn.

The bigger issue comes when planes go in for thier 500 hour service and major stuff like that... If they don't have enough mechanics that won't happen and the planes will be grounded which will cause problems for NW.
