North To Alaska--May 3, 2011 on the Disney Wonder

Normally, HUMP DAY is reason to celebrate. Unfortunately, I've been HUMPING snow almost the entire day! Well, sort of ... you know ... as in shoveling!?

We had snow too. Not like those on the eastcoast.

Within the past 5-6 days, we have been graced with 65" - 70" of snow. Though most, if not all of the snow melted off the streets and cars (not the grass or parking lots) in between the two storms ... the latest storm graced us with 25-30" of snow, combined with 30-45MPH winds. Accordingly, snow-blowers are finding it difficult to throw snow up and over the existing 4' of snow on the ground, which has swelled to 6' because of shoveling, blowing, or plowing last week's snow. We lost five cars in the snow storm. They were not stolen or wrecked ... just lost (in the snow).

The City of Philadelphia was shut down Wednesday, and is shut down again today. Major thoroughfares (highways) are shut down to all, but emergency personnel (no, you cannot use them to get groceries). Our Governor declared a state of emergency, so he could call up the PA National Guard. These brave men and women recently returned from the sweltering heat of Iraq, and are now, once again thrust into service ... driving the Humvee's on snow-laden highways, to assist PA State Police, and PennDOT (PA Department of Transportation).

Ah, yes ... I am looking forward to a relaxing cruise in Alaska. However, if I see snow, I think I am going to

I see a lot of people on the main board really putting down the DCL itinerary for Alaska. I realize that this may not be the best itinerary ever created, but I'm honestly completely fine with it. With a 5 year old along, the whole experience is really important and for us, the difference is Disney. That may change when she's older (not if she's like her mom though!), but for now, I honestly don't see the big hoo-hah about the itinerary. Does anyone feel really disappointed? Obviously, if you're on this thread, you're ok with it, I suppose! Everytime I read those threads (and I know, I shouldn't), its just kind of depressing.

Part of the fun for us is doing the repo with a trip to Disneyland beforehand and making a big vacation out of it. But, we're coming from Florida, so its quite a haul across the country for us and we want to make it worthwhile. Or, maybe I'm just not all that into glaciers or will be equally impressed by any glacier. I mean, I'm a Florida girl! When I went up some random alp in Europe, I was thrilled. It didn't have to be Everest for crying out loud.

As any Disney cruise is not for everyone, not all Disney cruises are for all Disney fans.
We have done the trans-atlantic and panama cruises and probably won't do them again.
Probably won't do another Caribbean cruise again unless they add new ports.
It is the draw of something new, exciting and in a way, unknown.
These two cruises will be a lot of fun with a lot of friends.

Most people have to crawl before they walk, and walk before they run. Since I have never cruised Alaska, I deem this cruise to be my CRAWL to Alaska. I consider it a PRACTICE cruise ... since I am sure I would probably go back. Once someone is informed, they can make a better decision for future reference. If nothing else, it's a bucket list. Years from now, I can say (and remember) I was on the inaugural DCL Alaska Cruise ... while the others will have forgotten about their gripe sessions!

I too, like the REPO ... even though it's not a huge, continental, Panama, or Trans Atlantic REPO.

I am doing my first T/A cruise in April 2010 (also on DCL). If it's a good experience, I will likely do it again, but attempt to stay longer in Europe. DW and I were thinking of Cunard's T/A ... but they are a direct cruise ... no interim ports. I am not sure I would jump at that, unless / until I have experience with a T/A or that specific cruise line.

However, I don't consider any cruise as practice.
I always look toward the fun and adventure that any cruise may bring.
We have been so fortunate to make so many friends on the different cruises we have taken and always look forward to seeing those folks again.

--We're on the same page. I say "practice" ... as in baseball practice, or practice a musical instrument. It's one step closer to perfection (if possible). When you practice sports, or a musical instrument, you are doing so, to be better at it the next time. Count me in for next time ... as well as this time!

DL means Disneyland. Some of the ones doing the repo are going to DL first.

Good Morning Cruisers!

It is also our first Alaskan Cruise, and will be my first time to Alaska - Scott has spent time there. I am sure we will go back to Alaska (we planned one trip to Alaska years ago, but when we got to day 30 and were not yet back in continental US, we realized that trip would have to wait until retirement), but I am looking forward to the things that you can see better by ship - like the whales and calving glaciers.

We have gotten some new snow here (as we did not have any snow while the east coast was being hit), and are expecting more tomorrow. I am on late shift today, so I will get out and shovel a bit before going to work today.
