Nook/refurbished on Overstock $86

To heck with Amazon and their lighting deals. I think they just did this deal today as a bait and switch to get your to buy the more expensive model.

I bought this model instead!

thanks! i might just go ahead and buy this, instead of waiting for amazon to get their act together. stupid $89, split-second sell out!
may i ask, are the books generally more expensive for the nook? because that's what i've read.
for example: classic books such as sherlock holmes and pride and prejudice are free for the kindle, but cost $0.99 to $1.99 on bn.com for the nook.

As PP noted almost any non-copywrited book that can be had free for the nook (i.e, 99.99% of the classics). The difference in price lies not in the classics but in the best sellers. Most current NY Times Best Sellers only available as a Hardcover Book when in print are $9.99 for the Kindle and $12.99 for the Nook. But, and this is a big BUT, that's because of contracts that Amazon was able to negotiate way back with all the publishing houses when the Kindle first came out, and when e-books were an up and coming market and only a tiny portion of the proceeds that the publishers brought in. Now that many of those contracts are set to expire and booksellers are seeing more and more and more of their revenue come from ebooks Amazon may not be able negotiate to sell the ebooks at that discounted rate in the near future so the differences in price may be leveled soon (especially now that Apple may be getting into the e-book business).

Almost without exception, every book that you can get for free for the Kindle- you can get for free for the Nook. Plus library books, which is an great $$ saving feature.

any tips or tricks for this? DD has been studying victorian literature in school, so books such as pride and prejudice and anything by dickens would be great, and i'd love to find them for free for the nook.
one thought: can you d'l the free kindle books from amazon.com for the nook?

The best way is to check Amazon for the free titles and then do a title search on Barnes & Noble. Looking for free ebooks under the free ebook section is really the worst way to find the free books. If it isn't offered for free, there are tons of other sites that you can get the classic books. One of the biggests is http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page. Also, a great place to find out about free ebooks is to check nookboards.com and http://booksontheknob.blogspot.com/. Have fun!

Gutenberg is a great resource but many of the books put up there are horribly formatted.

Try checking
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/ebooks.php?forumid=130

For a nook you will want ePUB format. The people who upload there are true hobbyists in eBook formatting and they comb through the Public Domain books and make them look pretty before uploading them.

Non-Public domain books are hit and miss. Check the sites frequently and remember that anything that doesn't have DRM slapped on it is easily convertible from one format to another.

thanks everyone! :) wow, my head is spinning with all this info! i'm really going to have to dig into this! lol

i bought a leather nook cover and booklight from buy.com and the total was $20 and change. AND i bought it through sunshine rewards, which has an increase for buy.com right now, so i get 3% cash back :sunshine2:

here's the cover:

and the booklight:

i considered a screen protector, but i think i'll wait and see what the nook looks like when i get it.

I'd try the nook and see how you prefer to read with it. I read mine naked, a book-like case would drive me bonkers. I have an envelope style leather case I bought when B+N had a 50% off sale.

Sooo.... I was looking at this as present for my middle DS for Christmas. I have one of my own and he keeps borrowing it. He won't read a regular book but he absolutely loves to read on this. Well....Kept missing it on Overstock but I managed to get the refurbished Wi-fi only one directly from B&N and I managed to get it for a cost of $91+tax+free shipping plus I got a free Gift Card for $10 for books for him when I did it :thumbsup2

How you ask? Thursday night I logged on to ebates from there I linked to B&N. I bought the $100 worth of GC which earned the free $10 GC (which will arrive on December 26th). Once I had the $100 GC I went to ebates again (not sure if I will get the e-bate for this loop thru though as thru every other bonus program they exclude the Nook). Then I used the $100 GC to purchase the Nook. Today the $8 from the purchase of the GC showed up in my e-bates account. If I get the second e-bates refund my cost will be $83 plus tax

I did get an e-mail today from B&N to say the Nook is backordered - but it is scheduled be shipped on December 10 -plenty of time for Christmas.

Anyone receive shipping confirmation yet? My other item (protective sleeve for the Nook) has shipped, but the Nook says pending shipment.

just went on to Overstock and my Order says Processing , so it should be shipping pretty soon....

Verification measures are complete and your form of payment has been charged. Shipping times are noted on the product page.

mine just says processing. no info shown on whether or not my CC has been charged. this is from the order details page.

I received shipping confirmation this morning.
