Nook or Kindle HD - I got a little extra cash

I keep hearing people talk about the free book every Friday on the Nook. Amazon has literally hundreds of free books for the Kindle all the time. No, they aren't the newest releases, and they're generally from less well-known authors, but I've found many books that I would have never read otherwise. You can search by genre in the Kindle store and sort by price. My aunt wanted 'romantic suspense' and I found 50 free before I stopped looking.

Also, you can download samples of Kindle books at no cost. It really helps me to decide if I want to buy the book or not.

There's the Kindle Daily Deal as well. I picked up The Polar Express for $2.99 yesterday. I've also gotten a ton of free kids' books. They look better on my iPad than my Kindle Touch, just because of the color pictures. We had a 6 hour drive today to visit family, and my 5-year-old spent most of the trip readng new books. I had loaded up 20 or so for the trip and paid less than $5.00 total.

Barnes & Noble also has tons of free books all the time (I don't know why people focus on the "Free Friday" thing), along with samples of books. I've been reading many, many reviews of both the new Nook HD and the Kindle Fire HD and most say it's a toss up. Of the ones that call a winner, about 1/2 are for the Nook and 1/2 for the Kindle.

If I were in the market for a new ereader, I'd probably choose the Nook, just because I can go to a brick and mortar store for support if I have a problem with it.

That was part of my thinking as well.

Overall I have been happy with my Nook tablet. I have downloaded many free books from B&N and I do grab the free book every Friday. I love the free friday books as they have opened up a whole world of books that I would never have found on my own.

From what I have heard, Kindle offers a lot more free apps. Since I am really using it as an ereader, that isn't important to me.

If I were buying one for my kids, the apps would be more important, so a Kindle might be a better choice for them.

I LOVE my Nook, and the Nook HD I got for Christmas.

For library books, I would recommend the Free Library of Philadelphia, it's now $35 a year, but really a great value. They have a LOT of ebooks, good customer service and you can put ebooks on hold. You can register with them online now (new feature) and you do have to renew annually.

Barnes and Noble has a lot of free or really cheap Nook books, I can get my magazines on the Nook (and in paper), and I like being able to walk into a store and get help.

Nexus 7 or Galaxy Tab 2. Both are full Android tablets with access to the Google Play store, where there are countless apps available. AFAIK, the Nook and Kindles are limited to the B&N and Amazon App stores, respectively, which limits you to the apps they have.

Best thing is, you can run BOTH Kindle and Nook apps (both apps are FREE!) on the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Tab 2, so you get the best of both worlds, plus having access to whatever apps your local library uses for their books.

I hate to be limited and "locked in" to any one company, so I love the freedom of these 2.

Kindle...way better support and free and cheap stuff:thumbsup2 I have both, and the Nook is lacking sadly because it's based on the B&N platform which is NOT an android platform, much of what they offer is costly,(same stuff in android is free) and the free books they have are.....well.....I went through pages and pages before I gave up.
The kindle stuff however, hundreds of free books daily, in MANY genres, great apps, lots of freefreefree! pays for itself in a few days.....
