Are there any tips for how to get a room where you can use your balcony and not be driven out by smokers. Are there any real non-smoking verandah areas - perhaps a side or section that is non-smoking.

well if u get a stateroom toward the font of the ship , u would be ok while the ship is moving , as to when the ship is in Port u r at the mercy of the wind......

You could take the offensive away from the smoker.

First - Ask nicely if they would refrain (as their smoke is offending you, and denying you the right to enjoy your veranda too).

Second - If they comply, thank them.

Alternately - If they do not comply, break out the squirt gun loaded with the liquid of choice, and fire at will. The liquid you choose is not nearly as toxic as what is in that smoke, so your conscience will be free. They assualt you with the smoke, and you reply in kind. :p

Just kidding of course - but ask and you might find they will indulge your wishes.

I am a highly outspoken non-smoker, but I will play devil's advocate here. Since smoking is allowed on all verandahs, if a non-smoker next door asked me not to smoke, I would tell them that I paid big bucks for the verandah and cannot smoke in my room, so tough kahoonies.
With that being said, there are a few strategies to minimize the chances of being bothered by smoke. Book a stateroom like 5622 (sorry, Rae...I know it's "your" stateroom :D ) with a neighbor on only one side. Alternately, book a navigators verandah because its enclosure will keep the smoke out. Some other staterooms are good for non-smokers too...5650 only has a neighbor on one side and is somewhat recessed, so smoke rarely bothers us in that room. We did have one bad experience...for some reason, our chain smoking neighbor always stood up and stood in the corner on our side. Ugh! Believe me, I would have loved to have tried the liquid idea on her.

There are over 300 discussion concerning smoking on this board. Last summer I started a discussion by taking a poll to see how many people would like a Smoke Free Cruise. There were a lot of favorable responses. However, Disney seems unlikely to change. There was a proposal that smokers get starboard cabins and non smokers get port cabins. There was also a lot of interest in smoke free clubs. If you are alergic to smoke, forget about going to the clubs.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I'd really like to see an area set aside for the smokers, perhaps the hidden deck 7 aft, and then limit smoking on the verandahs. I wouldn't mind if they smoked in "designated smoking" rooms, as long as I could be guaranteed that I would not be assigned to such a room.

Duckyladie, if there are over 300 discussions concerning smoking on the boards, do we need to request a sub-forum, such as the Cruise Meets sub-forum, to discuss strategies, techniques for minimizing smoking, etc.?

I am not sure about a sub group. I would like for Disney to be more mindful of the needs of non smokers. How do we get their attention?

Carnival had the one and only smoke free cruise ship and as of Sept 20, 2004 it will no longer be smoke free. They said the ship was only sailing at about 1/2 to 2/3 capacity and it wasnt generating the revenue so they are discontinuing it in 7 months! It stinks (literally) but I doubt any cruise line will undertake a non smoking ship again..maybe a non smoking sailing once a year but not a whole ship. I loved the Carnival Paradise and it was SO nice to not have smoke everywhere but I understand it just wasnt filling up.

No, Duckylucky, the smokers can't have starboard...that's where my beloved 5650 is located, and I'm not going to take up smoking to stay in there ;)
Seriously, though, although I'd personally love to see Disney add more restrictions on smoking, they'd probably be in the same boat (pun intended) as restaurants that have plenty of seating available in smoking while non-smoking waits are 30 mins. to an hour. A smoker can use a non-smoking facility, but a non-smoker typically can't hold their breath for a whole meal or a whole cruise.
I really do wish they would ban smoking in the clubs during shows, tho'. I can barely make it through the 70s party, even in the non-smoking section, because of poor ventilation. And much of non-smoking is literally right behind smoking, so you could have a smoker sitting right behind you blowing smoke into your hair.
But overall info. on smoking/non-smoking is a great idea. I am currently finalizing a CD-ROM Disney Cruise Line Planner, and I am going to add a section on planning for non-smokers and smokers. Seems like there is a need for this info.

I am an ex-smoker who is violently allergic to flowers and cologne. Smoke does not bother me but cologne, aftershave and flowers have a terrible effect on my breathing. I am not going to tell you not to wear cologne or aftershave or not to purchase and enjoy beautiful flowers. It is something that I have to live with. If it starts to bother me - I leave. I do not ask you to wash it off or throw the flowers away.
Smokers have their rights and I will stand up for their rights. There are times when I was smoking that too much smoke bothered me and there are times now when it is so thick that it bothers me - I just leave. I don't think I am entitled to more rights than they are.

I'm a ex-smoker. I do not like to be around smoke either.

I'm also probably giving away my age by saying I remember when smoking used to be permitted EVERYWHERE. Nonsmoking sections in restuarants were far and few between, and smoking used to be permitted on every airline. One was able to smoke in grocery stores, movie theatres, etc.

While I agree that second-hand smoke is harmful, (my husband, also an ex, is allergic as well) I'm grateful that it's not permitted in most public places any longer.

I agree w/the post maybe DCL should have designated smoking rooms where people would be permitted to smoke on their verandahs. But I think it's crossing the line to ask them not to smoke on their verandahs if they've already been given the okay by DCL. Eventually, maybe cruise lines will be smoke-free. But until then, if the handful of smokers (is that correct, or are there a lot? what's the percentage?) on DCL are not in violation, I'm happy to stick w/the nonsmoking areas, (we have the majority of the ship) and am so glad that it's not permitted everywhere the way it used to be.

(I do like the idea of nonsmoking clubs.)

I can see where you are coming from, but I also have a different side of the story that includes a very close family member passing away from lung cancer (from smoking) If people want to smoke and give themselves lung cancer, then by all means its their perogative.I personally do not smoke and that's my choice. However, when people smoke in a club, they are forcing their carcinogens into my airspace. Yes I could just leave, but I'm also paying the "big bucks" to be there. And why should non smokers leave when a smoker could have taken a quick smoke before going in.

In Ottawa, we have no smoking in any of our restaurants and it's been a wonderful change.
I don't want to start a huge debate, and these are only my opinions and everyone has the right to their opinions. But I would definitely have to agree that I would love a section of the ship's cabins to be nonsmoking :)

ok here's the thing I dont normaly say things that will start a debate but as a smoker , and I see Iam one of the few here, I also have rights too, now I know I can smoke in my room but can in a verhnada room so of course that is the room I am going to pick, I am sorry if it bothers others but I too am paying for a cruise and would like to enjoy my morning coffee and cig with out hearing complaints from the room next door, pretty much the only time I would be out there smoking would be early moring and late evening the rest of the time up on deck , now as for smoking up on deck I always try to go off by myself or where other smokers are as not to offend anyone or bother them. and in clubs even being a smoker doesnt mean that too much smoke doesnt bother me , it does , and when other people smoke gets too much I leave for fresh air , or when I am around others that are smoking and it bothers me I simply walk away, same as anyone else can do. thank you for listening, we all have rights

siily047,

I thank you for your thoughtfulness. I defintely don't want to say that there should be no smoking allowed, that's not fair to anyone. I just think it would be nice to have a few room areas smoke free and then everyone is happy.

Less than a 100 days and I'll be sailing on that big blue ocean with Mickey :)

umm,, no one is allowed to smoke in ANY room, only out on a verandah and up on the outside decks (but not near the Mickey pool)

I think the poster meant "can't smoke in the room".
I too am a smoker and I didn't book a verandah for 2 reasons..
1) cost for a 3 day..if it was a 7 then yes I'd book it
2) I perfer to smoke in smoking sections only since nons don't normally come to that area.
I don't like to inconvience nons and I don't want to impose my smoke on kids.
I try to be very polite and considerate toward others and have no problem putting out my cig if I am bothering someone as long as I am treated respectively.

If all else fails, break out the super soaker.

yes I know where smoking is and isnt allowed, thats why we would go with a room with a balcony, but as I said we wouldnt be in it much ehheh atleast thats the plan , but I do agree that non smoking rooms would be great after all they do it in hotels why not on a ship, I'm all for areas that are non smoking because I dont want to bother anyone any more then someone would want to bother me, I always feel bad if I am smoking around a non smoker even in my own home and will ask them if its ok if I smoke, not all of us are bad people LOLOL I was just putting in my two cents ........ ok now I will go back to my quite lurking hehehee

So smoking is allowed in the rooms with verandahs OR just on the verandahs themselves? I thought smoking was only allowed outside on the verandah and not actually in the rooms themselves? Really important as I am highly allergic to rooms that have had smokers actually smoking in them.
